Make Your Time
I just hate to make the title of the post so similar to the title of the design it’s about, but this is the internet, and it’s only my most sacred duty to continue one of our most essential moments in history: All Your Base Are Belong To Us. That said, look at this watch. It’s called “Lock Your Time.” It’s made as a metaphor for the perfect moment. One you wish you could lock down forever.
The lock portion of the watch is the hours, the outer rim is the minutes. Metal! Runs nice like a normal analog watch. Needs a battery though, this one doesn’t run on steam or magic.
Three different styles, all nice and clean.

But in the middle and left watch, the dials are actually the opposite.

I can’t see how to read the watch. The first one seems accurate… But I would read something like ’08:14 / 20:14′ on the second one and ’10:20 / 22:20′ on the third one
What’s the code?

It seems like he got it mixed up too
Clearly he seems to read the dot as hour and lock as minutes !
I have to agree with most, it’s too hard to read.

It basically shows how dumb this design is. It looks pretty and unsual, but what’s the point if it doesn’t actually do what it’s supposed to do i.e. reliably display the time.
If there’s confusion about the time being displayed, I’d say the watch is useless.
I agree with you Bob, I think the middle one is showing something like 08:13 and the right hand one is showing about 10:20.
For a watch do do its job properly, you should look at it and pretty quickly know what the time is.
Form FOLLOWS function not the other way around,

Its a very strange design. I think the time you have stated Michael is correct. I think the 14:35 and 03:49 is incorrect.

First thought – wow
Secont thought – how UTTERLY useless and NOT designed. Don’t call it a watch.

WOW, THIS IS AN AWSOME DESIGN. I like watches that are a conversation piece and this one fits the bill. I want one!

the render doesn’t impress me. where are the details?

One of the design principles that ever industrial designer should apply before releasing any design into the wild is to ask himself/herself this:
“Does it do the job it’s for?”
Since so many people cant tell the time on these watches, you’d have to say the answer’s NO.
Whether it’s pretty or clean or cluttered or a talking point is totally beside the point – it doesn’t do the job it’s for, because when you look at it you have to stare at it for ages, mentally add in the little check marks and count around the face to figure out what the time is.
Having said that, they are beautiful, but no more useful than a lady’s bangle.

As best as I can tell from the explained times and the callouts to hours and minutes, I think the labels for the hour and minute “hands” have been flip-flopped. Reading hours as minutes and minutes as hours, they match up to the three given times.

the watch looks cool. i’m hoping that the times in the jpegs are just wrong.

the second two watches are upside down. thats why it seems the time is incorrect.

lol! Funny how u kind of presist on rebel against such a simple thing as naming things for what they are
We need more people like u
and the watches are cool! but u would have to look twice not to get it wrong (wich i normally do anyway)
but have u ever considered that the title is named based on what there’s in the article that makes it interesting? wouldn’t ‘lock your time’, ‘perfect moment’ or ‘your moment in time’ be a more correct title? on the otherhand u weren’t going for corrrect or perfect but for YOUR title… I like it!

Great article, well written.
I am the MD of text-lock and we are soon launching our new product text-padlock, which is a padlock which can be operated remotely by mobile phone, leaving an electronic signature of anyone using or requesting access. Please see http://www.text-lock.com/text-lock_GSM_SMS_padlock.html for more details on the product.
I welcome your opinions on this and would be fascinated to see your views in this blog.
