Editorial Standards and Ethics

Mission Statement

Yanko Design is an independent publisher, founded in 2002, and focused on bringing a unique, inspiring and unbiased voice to the design world, focusing on industrial design, product design, technology, science, automotive, gaming, and packaging design industries. Our goal is to educate, entertain and inspire by showcasing everyone – students and professionals on an international platform that focuses on their quality of work first. By curating the latest and greatest in each segment, we help guide solution-creation and purchasing decisions with real-world insight.

Fact-checking and accuracy

We pride ourselves on factual accuracy and reporting with integrity: the more comprehensive and accurate a report, the more value it holds for our readers. As such, we go to great efforts to ensure that, by the time an article is published, we have ascertained that its facts are correct.

We are experts in our fields; while we share our opinions, we are not here to preach. Opinion pieces and editorial voice will always be made clear. Part of the strength of our team of writers and freelancers is the expertise they bring to our articles. The foundation of our writing, editing, and fact-checking processes is rigorous research and not subject to the newest hot takes. Wherever possible, we signpost our original sources and data.

We recognize that mistakes happen, and updates or corrections can be necessary. Whether that was due to our reporting, or the information individuals provided us, companies, or other organizations, we’ll make that clear in our reporting. We encourage feedback on potential factual errors through our contact page.

Sources and bias

Yanko Design relies upon a variety of sources with which our writers build their articles. These can range from press releases, design submissions, attending events either in-person or virtually, to interviews and third-party information. When we conduct interviews, we make clear the nature of our story; we may record interviews where appropriate, and we abide by the assumption that sources are on the record.

The realities of publishing means that some sources may not be willing or able to reveal their identity publicly. While we prefer to name sources or interview subjects and link to their personal website for a detailed acquaintance, we will, when appropriate, allow for anonymous sourcing. This may be to ensure the safety of a source, whether from reprisals from an employer or other organization, or to enable them to speak more freely. We judge each request for anonymity on its particular merits.

Each writer brings an open mind to their work at Yanko Design. The facts must speak for themselves; we strive to make clear when any editorial voice is present. In the case of our first impressions articles, we use our judgment as experts in the field to highlight the pros and cons. We endeavor to be fair: if there is criticism, there must also be justification for that criticism.

Feedback
We encourage readers to share their feedback, their own opinions, and their experiences with our products. This may be done in the form of publicly-posted comments or direct messages via Yanko Design’s presence on various social networks, or privately via email or through our website contact form. We do not guarantee that we will reply or respond to each comment.

Similarly, Yanko Design recognizes that commenting is not a right and has rules and requirements for those leaving comments. We will not, for example, allow for personal attacks, commentary that is racist, sexist, homophobic, obscene, or felt to be generally offensive, or comments that are disruptive or intentionally off-topic. We may choose to delete such comments, or the systems used by our commenting services and the social networks may automatically flag or remove such comments without our involvement.

We value feedback and dialog that is open and respectful.

Quality Standards

Our in-house staff oversees every article published on our site. Our writers are experts in their topics with knowledge gained across their academic and professional work experiences. Occasionally we link to outside websites if they’re relevant to the story. We maintain the highest quality standards by reviewing our text, images, and illustrations and by showcasing a product by focusing only on the problem it highlights and the innovative solution it provides as a whole.

Ethics

All editorial content is the author’s opinion and represents the point of view of that individual writer rather than Yanko Design as a company. At times, Yanko Design writers are invited to speak professionally on television, live streaming, radio, at conferences, or other events. Such appearances should not be considered endorsements, and any opinions stated are those of the individual.

Event Coverage

Occasionally, companies may host us at events to demonstrate their products and services. Companies are given no editorial control over content subsequently published, though Yanko Design will at times later make corrections and addendum to factual errors based on their feedback.

Advertising and Sponsored Content

Advertising is used on Yanko Design to cover operational costs. Advertisers do not have input on editorial content or whether products they produce – or which are related to such products – are covered and in what way.

Some of our content is organized into tags and categories. Tags are a collection of stories on companies collated for reader convenience and in no way represent an endorsement of those companies.

Some of our content may contain marketing links, and we may receive a commission for purchases made through those links. Our writers don’t take part in how those marketing deals are organized, and our affiliate partnerships don’t influence our editorials, advice, or buyer guides.
