Getting Lost Is Not So Trendy
Maptor is this wonderful combination of a map and projector that (predictably) projects the desired map onto any surface. Palm of the hand, floor, and walls included. What I really fancy about it, is its size. Small enough to pass off as a lipstick (or a chapstick for you guys), the device is discreet enough for you to quickly hop into a quiet corner, check for directions and make your way forth. All this without anyone knowing that you are lost or need help!
Another good thing about the Maptor is that it has GPS included; as a result there is this big red arrow on the map that points to your current location. Therefore getting your bearings and charting your course is easy.
Although the images of the projected map look visible enough even in daylight, I wonder if it’s really going to be that clear in its practical avatar.
Anyways, I think this project has the potential to make it to the market and be a hit, I would love to get one for my husband, who hates to ask for directions!

I’m not sure that this is an eco-design (which is important for me), but the function is interesting, and maybe usefull. but i think that nowadays the most mobile phones could (or can) help you if you feel lost. (especcially mine not
)
so i think we shouldn’t design always a brandnew object, sometimes we should use our old ones.

agree…maybe combine projector function into cell…

agreed, phones are being manufactured with technology which caters for this need, but then are we relying to much on that one item. Also with added function more research would need to be done on batteries to cater for the power supply needed

the gadget is cool but the basic question arises in the mind is that this functionality is given by the new upcoming mobile phone they have the same sort of navigation so what are the advantage which can compel me to think upon?

Interesting concept, but not unseen before. Its called “The Six Sense,” developed by MIT’s Media Lab. In addition to having a portable projector, the information on the “screen” can be manipulated using visual input in the 3D space. Video and more information are available via the following links:

There’s already a Maptor killer: it’s called the iPhone. I’d much rather use that. I’m concerned about brightness and battery time with this. It’s a nice concept, but not really all that practical. I seriously doubt it will make it to market.

I have saw small portable projectors, but this one is really cool because of the small form factor. I would purchase one if they were out. Please bring them out now & not in year 2030, but nowwwwww!

That’s a great idea, I would totally buy it. I can use a GPS on iPhone, but sometimes can be dificult if your actually talking to someone at the phone, trying to give or get some directions.

Is that small wonder waterproof , to be of some use by treckers and others adventurers around the world , not speaking of military peoples ???!?!?!?!
Paul says
Fantastic!!! Pure genius! And as for cell phones,
1 – Screens toooo small. In a city map with sometimes hundreds of details on the same screen, the “enlarge” function of this gadget here is awesome, and
2 – Good luck taking your iPhone to the Amazon jungle, for example, and bringing it back in one piece … Oh yeah! and with no scratches!
Hope it’ll hit the market soon.
