Yanko Design was invited to attend the 2011 red dot Product Design Gala in Germany and the awards ceremony for the design concept winners in Singapore and we witnessed the energy, the enthusiasm, the glory of winning, upfront. Seriously, a red dot is all it takes to catapult you to instant fame! The 2012 red dot award: design concept is now in its regular registration phase but you can get a complete fee waiver for pre-judging entries. Exciting!

Celebrating a decade of innovation, student spirit and adaptability, The Electrolux Design Lab Competition has grown from seeding creativity to empowering young designers. The Logo Competition hosted with Yanko Design received an overwhelming response, and we thank you all for your participation. The winning entry was picked from a shortlist of six finalists, and as a special treat, the first runner up wins a prize too! The winning entry will be used as the official Electrolux Design Lab Logo for the 2012 competition and on all Design Lab communications.
To quote Professor Dr. Peter Zec “Companies have realized that investing in design offers a considerable added value. In the end, the design of a product is the most important incentive for the purchase decision of a consumer.” We totally agree! The winners of the 2012 red dot product design were recently announced and like last year, the official Gala will be in July. It has been an eventful year for Yanko Design, partnering with IDSA for their IDEA Awards. We showcased some really innovative ideas and hope that our readers are inspired to participate in the 2012 competition. Davin Stowell says that “Great design begins and ends with a deep understanding of people’s innermost needs and desires with a responsibility to society.”

Electrolux Design Lab is no longer just a design competition where students compete for the coveted internship and prize money. It has grown to become an institution that symbolizes pioneering innovation, adaptability and a design process that empowers futuristic thinking. Entering its tenth year, 2012 marks a new chapter in the story.

This can easily be one of those regular ‘call for entries’, urging you to participate in the most coveted design award of ‘em all. But I’m on this swing to do things differently; so instead of a subtle reminder that February 29th is when the Early Birds registrations close, I’m going to tell you why Ken Koo, red dot design award Asia President, feels that designers need to be 20% Business-minded and think less like artists. And one more thing, if you miss the early bird be sure to register by 27th June 2012; that is the absolute last date.

Steve Jobs hired designer Hartmut Esslinger as the modern-day Snow White for his projects code-named after the seven dwarfs. The vision was to infuse Apple products with “born-in-America gene” and DNA inspired by “Hollywood and music, a bit of rebellion and natural sex appeal.” Hartmut’s mantra was simple, “Form follows emotion,” a twist on the maxim that form follows function. Yanko Design respects both these aphorisms but believes that we should not limit creativity within the realms of form, function and emotions; thus we follow Form Beyond Function.
