Paper To Pencil, Just Like That!
P&P Office Waste Paper Processor is one of those things that you wish you knew how it works, but dang! no reasonable explanation provided at all! Maybe it’s a deliberate attempt on the designer teams’ part, because their idea is a surefire hit! What this lovely machine does is that it converts all those useless memos on your table to something useful: A Pencil! Paper goes in from one end and come out shaped like a sexy writing tool! Sexy enough an idea to bag a Liteon Award as well!
Pencil lead, power and glue are the only other things that it requires.
Designers: Chengzhu Ruan, Yuanyuan Liu, Xinwei Yuan & Chao Chen

so you but some pencil cores and this thing wraps paper around it tightly to form the 'wooden' bit… Nice concept I suppose but this process is certainly not going to be cost effective.. they'd also likely be crappy pencils that fall apart when sharpened
Cole Derby says
So, despite the fact that your re-using paper. You have to also buy pencil core material and glue? How often are you running through pencils that this machine would be a useful tool?
baleyus says
It would make more sense to turn used paper into a straw instead of pencil. Probably straw is more likely to be used than pencil in our digital world.
Miguel says
A straw? it´s an olso thrown away item, which lifespan is about no more than 5 min after you stir your cofee or mix something…..
a pencil is much more useful and has a longer span life as a product

it would be so easy to test the principle for feasibility before you design a device based on this principle. But no, are designers, not engineers. We don't try things out, we just assume our thoughts can be transfered to reality 1:1 instead.

Interesting idea but the consumption profile for paper doesn't match pencil consumption so you have excess "pencils" compared to paper. It also seems like there would be a lot of glue used in this and is less likely to be eco-friendly compared to simply recycling the paper in the standard fashion.

This concept can have far more applications than just pencils, the cylinders/tubes so formed would be very strong because they are in effect laminated. It only requires imagination to come up with more direct uses for waste paper, laminated paper board as an alternative to chipboard and other particle boards. The person who tried to produce flammable gas from coal blew himself up and became discouraged so sold his process. The new owner sold the "useless" by product "creasote" to preserve wood which enabled the railway builders to use wooden sleepers until the advent of reinforced concrete ones.

Great idea due to the waste of paper I see every day in our office. Could one make use of the left over soda pop drainings for the “glue” to bind the papar as its rolled around the carbon core? Or what other waste sticky stuff could be recycled? I like the concept and must add that I always need an eraser.
Feniks says
Hand made paper pencils is nothing new. Chines export them all ower. Sharpening this pencils is normal. But I do not know anything about the economy of this machine.

People, think about schools where pencils are always needed and paper is used far from sparingly. This concept could be more than cost effective and 100% relevant. As for erasers, have you been to a stationary store lately? The multitude of options are mindblowing! Stop looking for the flaws in everything and realise the simplistic brilliance of concepts such as these.
Denise says
I was just thinking this myself! I have 3 kids in school, and the amount of paper I have to throw away from school work vs. the amount of pencils we go through/lose in a school year?? This would be the greatest thing EVER for our family. Of course it DOES depend on the cost of the glue and the lead. If that's an acceptable amount, I would be adding this to my wish list.

Depending on what documents were used to make the pencils, this could be good or bad for somebody. Who would search a pencil?

Agreeing with RadDad, I could see this being used in the situation he brought up. Thing is, it would only last until digital technology comes into play in that same situation. All in all, nice idea!

There is another concept for a printer that uses pencils instead of ink as the print medium, it can also erase sheets of paper it has previously printed on. So when the paper is unusable due to being constantly recycled run it through this and use it as ink!
Superb, and damn the naysayers!
Ryan says
I wonder how long it takes to make the pencil

The idea is great but in actual practice, it seems to be difficult to manage all the required things in such a small enclosure.
This involves proper mechanism for Leads storage and dispensing, Gluing provision, Rolling paper under tension over brittle pencil lead, Drying of pencil at controlled temperature, etc.
Have you made the actual working prototype of this device..?
I would be extremely greatful if the designer of this device share some thoughts with me.

I think its a pretty cool device. So what if you still have to buy pencil cores and glue. It may be a bit impractical, but you can make your own designer pencils. I would like to see how well they hold up though.

I hate the fact that there are so many people who, having no ideas of their own, seem to find great pleasure in picking out perceived failings in other's ideas.
To those who think the pencils will fall apart, you probably have furniture in your home made of sawdust and glue, it's all over the planet. Paper and glue would be stronger.
To those who think it isn't eco-friendly, why? How expensive do you think it is to apply glue to paper? I don't know, but I'll bet you don't either. Also, there are lots of glues made of natural products that will break down in the environment.
To those who think it isn't practical—maybe not for you, but you just might not be the intended consumer. Not everything written, not everything created, is directed at you.
To those worried about the cost, you don't know what it costs, so don't worry.
I could go on, but…all of your complaints make it sound like the real thing that's wrong is that it wasn't your idea. On the other hand, I love the thoughtful comments about how it could be used and who would use it, even how and if it can work…good job thinking people!

Why, oh why, do I lately keep seeing design after design on several blogs (mostly through StumbleUpon) from what clearly seem to be Asian guys/girls suffering from a severe case of Engrish (and "no", I'm not a native English speaker either, but come on; you should be able to do better than this)? And why is it that almost all of these (solely rendered/CG designs) are either useless in practice, not cost effective, or simply not called for? It looks nice, it's a "funny" and/or "neat" idea, but that's about it. And @judabeast: regardless of whether or not I may or may not have any better ideas (it may very well be the case that I don't), I am not the one putting my ideas out for the masses to judge; if you do, prepare to be judged, it's as simple as that.

A lot of people aren't thinking. You wouldn't turn EVERY piece of paper into a pencil. When you need a new pencil, you insert a piece of paper. When you don't, you recycle the paper. It'd be good for office use. It even says office on it, offices, where more pencils are used than at home.

People would like this because it is in line with their admiration for anything environment friendly. It is a creative idea, but won't really translate to reality. The machine (if ever made a reality) would be expensive. It would be cheaper to dispose the paper to a recycling facility.
And…. why pencil. Why not gold?

this is extremely retarded. it won’t be worth the money, seriously. you might as well just recycle the paper. at least it can be reused for something actually useful.

totally disagree with you. if you take a quick look around you’ll see a total boom in the variety and volume of writing/notebooks being sold. e.g. moleskine. people are jotting, scribbling, etc. more than ever – while also doing all the digital stuff.
paper consumption has grown exponentially since the digital world made us go paperless.
