Dual Music Player That Plays Your MP3 Collection & Your CDs

You want to enjoy your audio CDs while traveling but you also have a huge MP3 collection at home that you want to take with you. The ideal solution? DMP, a portable music player that supports CD and MP3 files. Use the MP3 player as you normally would, hang it around your neck, clip it on your jeans or place it in your pocket. Otherwise open both sides and insert your favorite CD and you got yourself a CD player my friend. Now that’s music to my ears.

What happens when you knock it closed while it’s playing a cd? Does it shoot the disc out :D Nice renderings anyways.

Holy crap, I want one. It’s ridiculous, sure. And while it’s certainly portable in theory, as ocdude points out, it can never be ‘ported and used at the same time. But, whatever.

It’s beautiful and different and awesome and I want one. =)

Better idea: Give is a couple gigs of memory, then make it so you could rip CDs with this thing.

Get this, buy the CD, rip it in the car seconds later, put the CD away for safe keeping in the case, and listen to the mp3s, all on the same device. Sync with computer when you get home. THAT WOULD BE COOL. I would buy more CDS.

This simply looks awesome.
I do not know many people that still own CD’s, except for the car rides, which you could use any FM transmitter with an MP3 player.

Back in the late 80s there was a similar portable cd player. It was made to play mini cd singles (remember that format? me neither), but it would play regular ones as well, sticking out the side. Anyhow this device would be cool just to be able to burn a disc away from home, even if you had to leave it on a table to do it.

I just want a release button on this thing that will shoot the spinning CD at enemies. Then it would not only look cool, but it really would be a practical device. That is, if you have enemies you would like to shoot spinning CD’s at.

The reason this is a great idea is that you could rip a cd directly to the device eliminating all the pain in the ass of searching for the usb cable, that the cat has chewed on, and your girlfriend has hidden some where that makes absolutely no sense to you, and then hook it up to your computer. Instant gratification.

We all know this is impractical, but it’s one of the coolest concept designs I’ve seen in a long time. And if it does rip CDs, could you imagine keeping this in your pocket as your MP3 player, then stopping by a friend’s house, popping the CD in it, and ripping some tracks? Add WiFi so it can get CDDB information on the fly, and this would be too awesome.

Definitely, though, if it’s used JUST to rip CDs and NOT as a CD player, the impracticality of it becomes virtually nil. It’s not good to leave a CD playing unprotected like that for the reasons mentioned above, but to do a quick rip with a device that fits in your pocket? Perfect.

I have the perfect tagline for you:

“A great way to scratch the hell out of your cd’s.” (while it’s spinning, the cd is completely exposed)

or how about this one:

“Be very careful, this is extremely fragile.”

So the LCD portion never physically touches its back counter part so a CD can slip in? Seems stressfull for the front two arm joints to take the weight of the play.

mate… that is a bloody good idea…
if i had the money i would buy one…

now all you have to do is make it in the form of DVD, HD DVD and/or Blueray.
portable CD Rom drive…
that would be kick ass

The rotational speed of a CD is quite fast and would pose a danger to the operator as it spins in the unenclosed environment. The idea is excellent and I’m sure that the exposed edge can be solved.

If the device could write CDs - I think it would appeal to another segment - those that bring music to share with others. Device to device transfer is unrealistic in the current DRM and proprietary interface world. However - burn a CD to give a friend and now you have a universally transferable medium.

Saludos

This design is still just an image right? So i guess we can say that it can do what ever current CD players does. Write, read, copy, rip, and even connected to AV outputs… i mean why not.

But it think we should focus on the design aspect first. One thing to note, this is indeed a dangerous player to use for both young and old. All of us like to enjoy our music at a relax position, i really don’t think any of us would want to hold the player in our hands and stare at the fast rotating killer blades as the CD/DVD/HD-DVD is spinning away in front of our body or arms. Neither do i think it will be safe to place it on the desk, hey it may just take off.

Also just for the record, the design for such a player has been featured in the Japanese Anime/manga “Ghost in the shell” back in 1995.

P.S: i really love the CG work and design of the player, but i have long thought it as a non-practical design due to the danger such a player post.

Hmmm… Looks great. But.. Not practical. If there will be a protection or cover for CD that will be OK.

But maybe.. There can be added 1 more intresting option. A CD ripper.
CD ripper + Mp3 + Kind of Discman. And now we don’t need Pc to load music to our Mp3.

Of course.. That is only my suggestion :]

Cool idea but i don’t think I’d use it… to many variables could happen to that cd spinning out in the open like that. I could end up breaking a CD. Plus I don’t want to be stuck in one place listening to music. Maybe if you stuck a small speaker on it.

This could work if the LCD portion can be lifted up. So, spread out the two sides then pull open the LCD portion from its counterpart. Load your CD (it clicks to the bottom part), close the “lid” then press play.

There’s no reason the mp3 portion can’t be played while the unit is closed/in transit.

This is an awesome design except for the cd scratching but that’s what TDK’s armor CDs are for.

Like other have said, where can I buy one?

You’d think there’s enough Chinese knockoff manufacturer out there to attempt something similar. Perhaps designers can collaborate with these knock-off manufacturers to bring these concepts to market, albeit it some sort of “beta product” warning.

Well, at least one can choose to use mini’s and not have to worry about the rotational speed changes such as the “old” lp portable http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/mister-disc/mister-disc-the-portable-lp-player-303097.php

Comment by Daniel

Love The concept. just to note a CD doesn’t spin that fast in play mode 1x is all it needs which is 200[out side track]-500[inside track]rpm. [perhaps 2-4x for buffering but its not gonna move anyway] which isn’t very dangerous to you [for you divisors of weapons]. but if it had a rip feature it mite need to go abit faster not to mention the power it would need to run a quick rip so it would either take 1/4 time length of the CD to rip or you would flatten the batteries.

In other words, STOP ASKING ABOUT WHERE TO BUY ONE OF THESE THINGS! IT DOESN’T EXIST YET!

This goes for almost all the other designs on this site too… it’s so annoying to me when people ask “how much is this and where can I buy one?” about something that’s still in concept phase.

Now if only I could buy one of these…

Nice! However, that cd needs some protection. Since the laser reader can be in any position, why not work it like a hand fan, with a collapsable surface that could — optionally — protect the cd? One could then play a CD with the “fan” open or closed, partially or fully, depending on taste. This also might make it easier to move it about with a cd inside.
