Glow is a low-cost, low-maintenance, and low-tech solution for providing efficient, effective lighting to the developing world. The device uses phosphorescent (glow-in-the-dark) powder, which absorbs environmental light and slowly releases it when dark. Modern phosphorescent powder has a lifespan of up to 10 years and a glow that can last up to 6 hours! UV light isn’t even required to power the glow!

This has been done before, see ‘Glow Brick’. I have to say as a designer, though, it is about using sometimes existing ideas and applying them in new ways. This is a great solution for when natural disasters strike or for third world.
Not sure how bright it will be but the principle is great! I’ve used phosphorescent materials before, in the right conditions they can be a lot brighter than you think!

Because it costs money. Good design always cost money.
Nice design, sustainable, and no need for batteries, solarpanels or dangerous fires. There is also another design that uses gravity to power a light. That one is much brighter, but needs many mechanical components and imagine the maintenance and repair costs. This could be good secondary lighting in a village place.
