I’m as giddy as a school girl at CES because I’m literally going to be living in the future for the next few days. The annual Consumer Electronics Show has so many products to offer that I’ll just play curator. Hit the jump!
Exhibition: CES 2011 Part 1
It’s an honor for Yanko Design to be considered as one of the most influential modern design sites, and be invited to the most happening events across the globe; FEED (First International Design Media and Bloggers Meeting) at the Valencia Design Week being one of them. While we partied hard with the hosts, designers and contemporaries, we also indulged in some serious design discussions and got insights to various streams of arts, designing and ceramics. Leaving aside the drama (we got pick pocketed) and the jet-lag (18-hour flight), overall we had a wonderful experience. Here is a compilation of all the fun stuff that our trigger-happy camera managed to capture.
Eight amazing designers from around the would took turns presenting their ideas to a panel of four very tough judges. We were taken aback by the amazing mockups Electrolux provided. This was a dream come true for many as it is often rare to see a physical model of your design. We felt nervous at the pit of our stomachs for them. The judges scrutinized every nuance of each concept. They praised what needed to be praised, but made sure each designer knew where the flaws were – perhaps a good lesson.

Socked! Well don’t be, because this time the mocking is for a good reason. As a part of their competition procedure, Electrolux Design Lab finalists’ designs get fabricated as mock-ups and are displayed at the Electrolux Design Lab booth at the 100% Design London fair. Here is a look at how glossy and sleek these futuristic products can look in our homes. As sketches and renders, it’s difficult to judge how any product will adapt to its environment. Life-size replicas give us a peek at how they will look at home.

YD @ 100% Design London for Electrolux Design Lab 2010
As promised, here is the second installment on the Korean Activities this September at 100% Design London. Just a reminder that their stand is located at L70 and you can visit them anytime between 23rd and 26th September 2010. What really fascinates me is the diverse collection they are showcasing, In Part I we saw amusing jewelry, ceramics, glass, lights and children’s furniture. In this episode I bring to you clocks, bathroom fixtures, pillows and lots more cool stuff. So enjoy!
Korea Design Pavilion: L70 @ 100% Design London: 23 - 26 Sept, 2010
Delve into the archives of Yanko Design and you’ll notice that 6 out of 10 designs are by Korean Designers! It’s never been a calculated attempt on our part, but the truth is that their ideas and concepts are so innovative and in-sync with “good design”, that it is hard to ignore. Many of you write in to ask how we find out about these designers; I can’t give out our trade secret, but I can direct you to a place where you can meet them in person and maybe share your passion for design. The Korea Pavilion will be set up at the 100% Design London, this September.

The 100% Design Exhibitions are a great time to mingle with the cream of the Design Industry and I really had a great time covering the Tokyo Edition. The theme this year was “Love Green” and the Exhibitors did a great job interpreting and weaving in the sentiments into their designs. The theme was well reflected in products made using alternative energy sources and natural materials. In short everything looked green too, I mean the color green!

Fresh after showcasing the Bombay Sapphire Designer Glass Competition, here’s a peek at what they are up to at the 100% Design festival. YD brings to you exclusive pictures from one of the most coveted ID Competition for 2009: The BraunPrize. This year’s EUR 12,000 prize money has been claimed by Johanna Schoemaker for the brilliant Clam I OLED Lamp, and she even gets the opportunity to intern for six-months at The Braun design department. Other Top 3 from the 22 finalists include Karsten Willmann for Skylino, Stephan Zimmermann for Anemone and Tobias Stuntebeck for White Cane.

My goodness! Welcome to the future! Electrolux Design Lab 2009! Each of these designs is made to work in the world for the next 90 years. *OH my mistake, one is made to work outside the world. The brief stated that each item be able to prepare and store food, wash clothes, and/or do dishes over the next nine decades. Behold this limited list of robotics and flying things!
