Phone That Shames The Weather Bureau
I don’t know about your city, but the weather bureau of my hometown is often sniggered at, for their in-accurate predictions. When they say it will rain (like they predicted a couple of days ago) you can be sure it will be bright and sunny. I would like to gift them this “Window Phone”, that makes accurate predictions and even changes its display to reflect the climatic conditions outdoors. Maybe I should keep the phone for myself and bug the bureau with my updates.

You know I’m glad this is here, I was waiting for someone to do this exact design (although I’ve seen kinda similar before), no kudos however, because its so obvious. You realise this is the pinnacle and the end of phone design. Phone design if ever reaches this far can only go this far. Its a simple, clean, minimalist design and currently (and most likely in future) impossible.
So, all the dreamers making glass/flexible transparent or similar (impossible) phones can stop now because they will live in the shadow of this.
You can’t better it – this closes the door on futuristic concept phones.
So how about we focus our talents on feasible phone designs from now on huh?!

I think that it is very possible that they come up with a way to make a flexible plexiglass designed phone – I mean look at the old cell phones that were a foot and a half long – and the new iPhone! I mean, technology just keeps moving along – evidently without you. Oh well, too bad for you!

There’s a difference between cool, futuristic, feasible gadgets and cool, futuristic, non-feasible ideas. Yes of course technology will keep moving along but being futuristic doesn’t mean you can just go wild. There is a need to relate future concepts with current technology so that people will know which direction to progress. If you don’t relate anything, people are more likely to push you aside and classify you as being purely conceptual and not bother a bit.

Products have a lifespan too and yes they started out with the brick and will end with this, or similar concept.

you know there was a point where the horse and carriage probably seemed like the pinnacle of transport design … then the steam powered locomotive came along, now
as for not giving kudos, you’re an idiot. elegant design ALWAYS seems obvious once it’s BEEN designed. that’s usually what determines whether or not it’s successful.
besides which, this is just a concept, whoever designs the first consumer model of this, THEN markets it successfully enough to become the Hoover(tm) of transparent phones, will be the winner.

People have said that about a lot of things. You are quick to announce an opinion which cannot be refuted (you won’t accept it, someone tried), writing on a computer and posting it online. There was a time when people said computers had reached a pinnacle, and regular people would never need or want computers. Oh the irony..

What about a projection onto a surface like your hand or upper arm from a wrist device, with as an example, a necklace and ear plug that would allow you to talk and hear conversations, or some other form of a minimal headset. Maybe you would look like you were talking to yourself!

It WOULD be wonderful to just sit back, relax, enjoy the idea and give it proper critique, wouldn’t it?
I mean… No one knows if it’ll be feasible, if anyone’ll get sued, if the world ends in 2012 or if the Queen of England is, in fact, an alien (although it’d be pretty damn precious if she was).
As for the actual critique… I like the general idea, although the weather effects may interfere with the reading and such. Maybe they could be more subtle or just localized?

Firstly I would like to say stunning design. Love the concept. I would really love to see this in my if not anybody’s hand in my lifetime, but I think it will be more likely that augmented reality communication options that can emulate interactive displays via wearable glasses will be ubiquitous by the time any of the physical tech for such a portable device is invented. Of course there are a large percentage of the population that feel their need to show off their personality via the particular device they own, but over time augmented solutions will win out due to the comparably low cost over time and instant upgrade options that they offer. Augmented systems are far more compatible at delivering revolutionary user interface design that will literally be able to surround the user, if they desire it to do so.
Just my 2 cents.

Total joygasm over the idea. I would like to see more of the minimalism employed in the notifications. For example, instead of a yellow star/splat, something more akin to the horizontal color bars at the top-left area of the phone. Simplicity, consistency, continuity, functionality. Work it baby.

you know, this is possible. with nanotechnology, a strip around the edge could function on several levels. exothermal energy, or simply the friction from your pocket could power it. we all know simcards aren’t necessary and frankly outdated in terms of technology. battery wouldnt be necessary.
with nano fiber optics, a very small amount of energy would be needed to power the phone. the diffraction of light passing through the phone would be minimal. enough to see whats on the phone, but you could still see through it.
not sure how you would be able to create isolated images, even like numbers. but im a classical musician for chrissake. i didnt study this shit, that’s your job designers.
anyways, this is a great idea. elegant, sleek, and obvious in hindsight. you are awesome.

As far as invisability goes, we have had many technologies that achieve this for years. Liquid electronics uses fluids (like water which is clear)to form circuits, encased in glass/plexi would make it see through. We’ve had liquid crystal screens that make numbers appear out of no where. And touchscreens are just a transparent film over glass. And if you’ve ever cracked open a battery, you know that the liquid acid inside is clear. So this phone is completely possible today, if you include a small frame around the outside edge, that incases the microphone and speaker, maybe a power jack. Although the screen resolution I’m not sure would be anywhere near what the concept shows.

If you payed attention, a few of us stated that you would need a small frame around the screen to hide some of the components that would not be transparent. The screen itself is possible today, just not at anywhere near the resolution shown.

I could understand having a frame around that glass that has all the hardware in it, however.. that is very possible, and have the glass as the screen. Similar screens are available for windows in your home, as the hardware is stored in the window frame and the rest of it is based on LCD polarization…
But this? This is a gimmick.. it'll never be made..

(as far as I know they are just perfecting them for ease of use & cost effectiveness) The actual phone should be possible or even available some time around 2025. (and will be the first to buy it)

The company should be honest about what they're presenting and tell people that the images are merely hypothetical. Had they been real, I would have been blown away because it looks so darn real!

How awful and pointless.
It’s major feature, that it is transparent, is impossible and the author suggests no way to accomplish it at all — thus, the level of ‘invention’ that six-year-olds enjoy. Not even any suggestion why it would be good (it would be horrible).
The second ‘feature’ suggested here is that it can indicate the current weather by changing the screen — something we have plenty of current tech for, but everyone else seems to realize is pointless. Who needs to be told what the weather is like? Even prisoners know this!
The last, small feature, bizarrely, is that it can change modes by a breath. Why? Aren’t there already plenty of ways to change modes in all the tech we use? How does it help to use your breath?
Couldn’t this empty, shallow suggestion have included even a hint of why these are good things? Why are the empty-headed people praising this empty, pointless fantasy? Why does this author ‘imagine’ everything else about the phone being so standard and predictable it’s already 15 years old?
