Plants Tell You What They Want
Growing plants would be a lot easier if plants could express what it is they need from you. Fret not because that’s what the Pet Plant by Junyi Heo does. The very sleek looking pot measures soil conditions, temperature, humidity, and water – calculates those variables based on the need of said plant, and expresses its condition via a series of pictograms on an LCD display.
It’s also smart enough to know if you’ve over watered and will systematically drain itself into a water vessel. All this high tech goodness does mean it needs power but a simple USB interface does double duty by charging and transmitting pertinent information to and from computer software.

the idea is very nice, but couldn’t it be a little bit more descrete. and not this big display with this (are they speakers) blue illuminated circles on the sides. imagine you have a lot of plants in your room.
so its not more than a nice little gadget, like all these usb toys.

I think the main purpose of this pot is not like you said. maybe it would be better this pot is on the desk. because it is used USB and tiny size. Maybe girls like it.

Well…concept is similar as you said.
Did you design that? I saw the first updating date at the your blog.(February 10, 2008)
But this work is for ’2007 Korea design exhibition’ and I was ‘product design part winner.’
Then, now this design is little bit differrent because I redesign, but concept is same.

It is an interesting concept. I think there is one problem with defining what kind of plant you have in the pot. The pot itself can calculate a lot but my guess is that users have to enter which kind of plant it is themselves.
We wrote about the usability of the icons on our site (have a look) and it would have been nice if the icons were related to ‘plants’ and not to ‘human’ facial expressions. Ever seen a happy or sad plant?

Digital pot don’t need to have lots of data for plants user have in the pot. If you buy plants for digital pot, just connect to PC and download information(rose, herb, whatever.).
Then feed plants. that’s it.
I don’t know which company will make this program. But, if this digital pot been the commercial product, the company should make the program for customer.
And second question, of course I never seen a happy or sad plant, just I guess that maybe the plant which is dried with out people’s care feels sad. Then I thought if plant could express something like baby or pet, people take care of them. so I use human expression.

Good to hear that you did consider these points. Regarding the PC and downloading the information; it is possible of course, but it probably makes your target group a lot smaller. You have to be a real plant lover to take this effort. But it still could be a big target group, I did not check that of course!
I follow your reasoning regarding the icons for happy and sad faces. But why not associate the icons with the actual status of the plant? Like hanging leafs when he is dried out or no leafs only twigs when he hasn’t had water for a while and is near dying? A well, maybe it is a matter of taste, I thought it would be better for the usability.
(I also wrote an article + usability of the concept).

I think the idea of the face is great! You would be able to “see” the plant’s hanging leafs when it starts to dry and twigs when it hasn’t had water for a while so and LCD showing just that would be redundant. And furthermore, this has to be understood as a decoration item, not a useful gadget. For that matter, a single wire that could be fit in any pot to analyze soil data would be a lot more useful and cost-effective.

I know there are digital picture frames that you can use all year, but, I was looking for a way to display them during the holidays, especially Christmas.
