Got warm fuzzy feelings about bonfires? Relive those moments with the Bonfire lamp. Twist them round and round in your hands to turn them on. The LED lights set off a warm glow. Too bad they don’t heat up so it’s more like a makeshift bonfire. Designer doesn’t mention how they’re powered, could be kinetic energy generated from your hands or an induction charging base. I have a better use for them. Anybody down for a night relay race?

Designer Hyun-Woo Sim likens life’s precious moment’s to a lock that only you have a key to. The Key Lamp follows that premise. To turn it on a key has to be used to move the switch to the on position, and vice versa. Novel as it is, I want one just for the sheer enjoyment of watching my partner drive himself mad trying to turn the damn thing off. Haha, if you want the key, come and get it. I love that game, don’t you? ^_^

The Hourglass Lantern works like traditional hourglasses but turns the thousand year old tech upside down (literally) by using LEDs instead of sand. You can even adjust how long it takes for the light to flow from top to bottom by twisting the two halves like a dial. As time passes, luminance decreases on top as it increases on bottom.

While not explicitly intended as a swizzle stick, the Mahoo light from Stefano Pistilli uses the conduction of water to complete the circuit and power the light inside. Utilizing an interesting environmental trigger, these could also be great night time pool toys or even help see and identify other scuba divers on a night dive. Nevertheless, I’m drinking alone tonight and I’m hoping scotch and soda has enough electrolytes to power this friendly light on.

Designer Jeong-Sun Park is a deep man heavily interested in the butterfly effect – the idea that variations systematic outcomes can dictate behavior. His Knob Light is a door knob with an internal generator that stores energy and illuminates the way in emergencies or whenever you need a guide to the loo. How it relates to the butterfly effect theory is esoteric but simply by expanding the knob’s function to include illumination, you effectively change the way you use the knob.

Unsurprisingly, installing high power 500 watt lamps in your in-ground pool is a real pain and not something you want to try and ‘wing’. Circumventing the whole electricity thing is Lysandre Follet’s Ecolights which use the pre-existing flow from the filter pump to drive a small turbine and a set of LEDs. Nothing earth shattering, but a good reminder of how “ReUse” can apply to energy just as readily as the cardboard boxes you get in the mail.

When you think the word “innovate,” you don’t often associate it with “recycle.” But what Stojanovic, Pavlovic, Milanovic have done here is both of those things, with a project called “Wellness Sky.” Together they transformed a 35 year old, lost and decrepit building into the once glorious landmark it was at its height, and they did it by turning it into a fitness center.

LightDrops looks like an ordinary umbrella but don’t let that fool ya. There’s more than meets the eye here. As water pours over the surface, potential energy from raindrops slamming onto the conductive membrane called PDVF transforms into electrical energy powering embedded LEDs sending your umbrella ablaze with light. The heavier the rain, the brighter the light to help you see your way.

When an establishment you do own, a hook you must have. You need to be able to make people have an experience when they enter your place of business, one that they want to continue or repeat. With the FLUX, people experience an eyeful of space, formed by light. Matali Crasset (w/assist) brings a new level of astound to “sitting around the campfire.”

Exhibited at the SaloneSatellite in Moscow, Anemona positions itself uniquely on any surface, making it infinitely configurable. Designed by Igor Pinigan, the lamp uses heavy glass balls in the bottom to stabilize it at any angle without affecting the light. No word on how the sculpture is powered, but I’m hoping it’s kinetic based and you have to punch the thing like a blow-up clown to keep it going.
