Auto design that floats my boat…

Design mash-ups can be so much fun. Take this 1963 Corvette Stingray inspired boat design by Swedish designer Bo Zolland. He takes the split-back window design of the classic American muscle car and fuses it into a watercraft that manages to come off very futuristic and ultra luxurious at the same time.

Crane With a View

Crane With a View

As cranes go, they either get the job done or don’t. Not much progress has been made in the past 50 years with crane development. Most of the evolutionary focus has been on lift capabilities and reach. “LYNX” – mobile crane by Jiri Kubec is a revolutionary concept in the way it treats the driver/operator.

Born to be Wild Design

Born to be Wild Design

In the competitive world of sleek and wind splitting motorcycle design, aero-dynamic drag efficiency takes a back seat only to face stretching speed and performance. This latest concept by NON-OBJECT called “nUCLEUS” throws out the current rule book and presents this “Square Against Air” electric motorcycle design. nUCLEUS boasts a thin comfortable saddle and horse-like behavior that lowers itself when idle and raises when in motion.

Italian Speed Racer

Italian Speed Racer

Ok, we realize this is the second auto post in as many days, but this story was too good to let go by unnoticed. It seems unbelievable, but what you are looking at is a concept design introduced by Italian auto dreamers SpadaConcept. The unbelievable part is that it has just been announced this very non-traditional design is actually going into production.

Ultimate Dreaming Machine

It was thirty years ago that BMW first introduced the BMW M1 super car to the world. Now, to celebrate it’s thirty year anniversary, BMW thought it would be fun to tease us all with this updated “concept” version of the original Bavarian bombshell. Originally designed by Paul Bracq and later by famed Italian design house Giugiaro, this BMW M1 Hommage takes a clearly aggressive pose, with retro features mixing it up with very modern elements.

A little light security...

A little light security…

Gosh I love objects with a multi-purpose! Some things in our lives really should be multi-purpose eg. the TV, it really is just a screen with speakers. Why can’t it be a microwave oven as well? or a wireless router for my internet? It just sits there taking up space, and taking my attention. But I digress and ask you to cast your eyes on this multi-purpose bicycle lock / bicycle light by designer Adrian Weidmann, he calls it “Loc+”… uh, ok.

Citroën with a Twist

Citroën with a Twist

One of my favorite scenes in the classic and hilarious movie “Airplane” was when Lloyd Bridges hands a weather report to “Johnny,” a fellow air traffic controller and asks: “Johnny, what can you make out of this? [Hands him the weather briefing] Johnny replies: “This? Why, I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl…” That scene ran through my head and was what I first thought of when I read about French auto makers Citroën’s C-Design competition. This challenge is to see what useful items designers can envision and make with only Citroën car parts and their logo design.

The Detroit Fish

The Detroit Fish

Is Mickey Mouse the new head of Tang Hua motors or is it Goofy? Surely no one else would invest the necessary millions into producing these er… ambitious concepts. An Aston Martin they aren’t, but they are just begging for Xzibit to be pimped out. Possibly this is the market? They do get bonus points for being environmentally friendly though, and have the added functionality of being amphibious.

Flowery Fiat

Flowery Fiat

The Flower Council of Holland has commissioned Arne Quinze, Fredrikson Stallard, Karim Rashid, Studio Job and Arik Levy (all famous names in the design industry) to design 5 New Fiat 500’s. The catch is that they had to design them using flower so as to raise the awareness of the uses of cut flowers. It sounds kind of odd, but the results of the finished, flowery, Fiat’s are quite mesmerizing. Not too sure they would be safe driving around town with the flower petals flying in your face. Neat concept and pretty unique use for flowers.

Toyota Goes on a Diet

Toyota Goes on a Diet

Toyota is getting seriously body conscious with its latest fuel efficient concept the 1/X. Taking everything they learned from their highly successful hybrid Prius, Toyota is looking for more ways to squeeze every inch from a gallon of gas possible. This 1/X concept design was built from the ground up with light weight materials, with which they hope to double the Prius’ already impressive mileage ranking.

And its name was Optimus

And its name was Optimus

Well, not really. It’s real name is the XO Move. But it looks like a transformer and almost acts like one. The concept is that when parked it transforms and locks up for security. It is adaptable to user needs, can carry one or two persons and sports a variable wheel base to make it more stable on the roads. Possibly it can take on Megatron too. who knows?
