Cook Top Vesta for the Small, Tight, and Cramped

Cook Top Vesta for the Small, Tight, and Cramped

Matthias Pinkert must have had me in mind when he designed the Cook Top Vesta, one of this year’s entries in the Electrolux design competition. For people constantly on the go, living in apartments where kitchen, living, closet, and sleeping all seem to blend into one. The Cook Top Vesta is a fold down cooking surface. Flip the top up when not in use to access a prep surface. It’ll also read RFID enabled food packaging to a certain proper cook times and even suggest recipes, if say all you got is a box of dry rotini pasta.

Still Haven't Found the Big Dipper

Still Haven’t Found the Big Dipper

There are a great many lights and chandeliers out there that emulate an explosion of light through glass and lines of refraction.  The Constellation Chandelier from Studio 1 Thousand however, accomplishes this feat through the simple use of LED’s and bent copper stems that array downward from a wrapped base.  Upon closer inspection, the clamps securing the LED clusters might even bring to mind Ingo Mauer’s Zettelz lamps, although this is anything but derivative.

With the Fences Down It Could be Anywhere!

With the Fences Down It Could be Anywhere!

When surround sound started to be pushed by home audio companies, the movie they used to push it with was Jurrasic Park. Hearing the T-Rex roar from all directions was the most excellent experience I’d ever had at a department store, and to my ears, it really did surround the room. But our ears have become more sophisticated in the short time between then and now, and Simon Denzel’s “Mono” is bringing us closer to real professional home surround sound.

Hamper is the Washing Machine

Hamper is the Washing Machine

I fail at managing laundry. I have way too many clothes. When I am ready to wash, it’s an all day affair dragging heavy baskets to and from the washer/dryer. I’m not saying I’m too busy or lazy. I just want a simpler solution and I think designer Guopeng Liang is on to something with his iBasket concept.

Trigano Coffee Table, DO WANT!

The Trigano Coffee Table designed by Michael Laut is an architectural piece of modern living for any space. It is made with a large piece of acrylic bent 90 degrees, suspended in place by a wooden brace. The innovative and dramatic design provides for expansive foot-room as well as a striking visual statement.

Alien Saucer Lands. FRED Humidifier Review

Alien Saucer Lands. FRED Humidifier Review

Living in L.A. means dealing with desert heat and the dry conditions that accompany it. I’ve used a number of humidifiers in the past and tho all performed as expected – they always ended back in the box relegated to the back of a closet. After using the FRED Humidifer by Swizz Style for several weeks, I’ve come to realize why my closet is filled with a bunch of past contenders.

Coox in the Kitchen

Coox in the Kitchen

Another entrant in this year’s Electrolux design contest, the Coox cook top table makes urban living a cinch. The flexibility enables you to roll it where needed. Now cooking in your living room right in front of the TV, or by your desk in the office is just a matter of convenience. When the unit is off, it even doubles as a table for serving and eating.

Stackable Seating made with Zero Defects

Stackable Seating made with Zero Defects

The Mebel furniture series has a set of stackable chairs made of molded wood or plastic. The ergonomic shape and portability make it ideal for hotel and office lobbies. What’s more, construction adheres to the six sigma philosophy, meaning zero defects – an idea I hope more furniture designers adopt.

I Want a Bath, Spa, and Jacuzzi but Got No Space

I Want a Bath, Spa, and Jacuzzi but Got No Space

I’m not going to poo-poo my apartment because I actually have a nice bathroom but am no where near sporting a bath, spa, and jacuzzi all in one unit. Have you seen the size of those tubs? They’re HUGE. Designer Dominik Chojnacki must understand my pain because his SPAcer is a movable Spa bath that can fold up against the wall to save floor space. Nevermind that it looks like an Orca turned upside down, Dominik claims the shape was inspired by two rain drops.

Kitchen on Wheels, Natch!

Kitchen on Wheels, Natch!

One of the top entrants in this year’s Electrolux design contest is the Kitchen Drawer. Designed for the internet generation – you know the type, always connected, always mobile, and most likely living in urban areas where space is a commodity.

A Seat for Meetings

A Seat for Meetings

Inspired by the mathematical harmony set out in Palladio’s own rules of architecture published in Quattro Libri Dell’Architecttura, La Rotonda is a table and chair set designed to recreate the perfect meeting place – a spot to exchange ideas, just like the famous monument it’s named after.

Appreciate Water

Appreciate Water

Many of us take water for granted. It’s difficult to appreciate something when in its purest form has no color, odor, or shape. Designer Hyun Ko promotes awareness and the significance of water by giving us a sweet juicy drink called Blooming Water. When your straw pierces a thin barrier holding the colored juice concentrate, it spills into the water forming clouds of color. For a brief moment, what looks still is actually always moving. Appreciate it.

Let Your Box of Light Shine

Let Your Box of Light Shine

Delft Wall Lamps were designed by David Ryan, as a tribute to famous artist Vermeer. Vermeer was known for his use of light as well as his paintings depicting the city of Delft, a place where Vermeer spent most of his life. The Delft lamps are made to form a simple box that gives off a warm and glowing light that will add just the right amount of soothing light to anywhere they are placed.
