Tips of the hat to Pratt! Getting a bunch of chairs into this renowned design fair is a big deal! Pratt is partnering with Folkwang Academy to exhibit chair designs at imm cologne! Cologne Germany will be glad to host this exhibition entitled “Take A Seat,” to take place January 19-24 2010. Here we’ve got a lovely preview of the pieces! If you’re familiar with graffiti, you might have stood up close to a giant spraypaint masterpiece. Out in nature, right there in the scene of the “crime,” you’d see the real shame: the cans. Often when a painting is executed, the only way a street artist can escape scott-free is to leave their quickly emptied, no-good cans at the scene! Well, no more! Noone in their right mind would abandon a reusable can like this!

Inspired in part by the classic game “Jenga,” this furniture bit is made to be a seat for a toddler, a bigger chair for a kid growing up, and a multitude of helpful bits for life! Working with both simple birch plywood pieces and a large stainless steel structure for strength and growth. Is it a seat, or is it a bunch o’ shelves? It’s both!

How many times a day do you look at your wash basin and think, gosh! It’d be super great if I could’ve gotten a lot nicer and more environmentally-sound wash basin up in here! How much do you want a basin based on sheets? Sheets are the future. This particular basin, designed by Sokolova Ekateryna and titled “Aqua Vita”, is just the basin you might very well need.

Sometimes you’re looking around and you get a speck of something in your eyeball sight line. It goes all over with your eye as you move your glazzies about! This is sort of like that, only it’s a cellphone. Designer Mac Funamizu totaled the amount of time he’s got his cellphone sitting on his desk for all to see to be 80% of his day. Lots of time for aesthetic beauty and interactive loveliness. This phone aims to please.

I always say it’s important for designers to attack everything. I mean you and me, designers, should not only choose a field to go into, but should also pay attention to and hope to improve on every little thing in their environment. The year 2009 can be marked as one of the most defining years for Yanko Design and its community. The year can be re-capped with the Best of 2009, but on the same note it’s important to iterate our accomplishments. When the world was facing its worst global recession in decades, (including the design industry as a whole), YD on its part grew its outlook by innovating to stay ahead of the game. For a moment you can actually say that Innovation has been the theme symbolic to YD and this year’s best designs.
Rambler Socket maybe the solution most of us are looking for as far as extension cords are concerned. I mean if you hit “Extension Cord” on YD, for most of the posts you will see readers nitpicking and finding fault with the design. Here’s why Rambler Socket will knock your socks off. It’s this 1.5 meters cord that unfurls from a cavity behind its socket. When you don’t need extensions, it’s neatly tucked away. When you need it, simply pinch the sides and wind it out.

It’s always the recliners and sofas that take away the credit of being innovative in design. Footrests and tables all included! So the Puppo comes as a refreshing change coz it’s a simple chair that you could keep in your dorm (occupies less space), yet gloat that it’s a decent recliner with its footrest and storage-box-space! Just tinker a bit with it’s mechanics.

I’m a sucker for unique things and the Haoshi X Rings more than satisfy my wanton needs. I love the Animal Series of rings made of resin set in sterling silver. They’re eye catching, high quality, beautifully designed and unisex. My only regret is not knowing about them sooner to include in our DO WANT! Gift Guide but who needs a holiday to shop! At $75 a ring with 10 animals to choose from – I say go treat yourself and buy one!
