My Affair With Korea

My Affair With Korea

My affinity and bias towards Korean designers is often reflected in the articles that I wrote for Yanko Design. So you can imagine my delight when I got the chance to visit the Korean Designers’ stand at the 2013 Munich Creative Business Week. Aside from the informative K-Design Talk (yes, after K-Pop its time to embrace K-Design), there were a couple of designers showcasing their works as a part of the design fest.

Plant Doctor

Plant Doctor

The Plant Doctor is not just any device that detects the health of your plant. It is sophisticated with tech and ensures you get the exact readings via the highly integrated micro-controller technology. The usual suspects of soil moisture, nutrition content etc. are charted easily. What makes the device even more practical is that it self powers using the electrolyte in the soil for energy. The highly sensitive soil nutrient sensor analyzes the soil and process the information.

Future Of Mobile Computing

Future Of Mobile Computing

This project is called ‘The Future Of Mobile Computing’ and it is the conceptual exploration of potential applications of future flexible technology. To streamline the future of flexible computing we have to reconsider some of the current technology and manufacturing techniques. This means that in the future it is possible to have hardware that is interchangeable, that learns from use, which changes over time, that degrades gracefully and that works naturally.

Posthumus Le Corbusier Lamp Finds Life

Posthumus Le Corbusier Lamp Finds Life

How amazing is this story? Listen to this. The Projecteur 365 by Le Corbusier has been selected as the winner in the “Best Reissues” category of the Wallpaper Design Awards 2013. Designed by Le Corbusier for the High Court of Chandigarh in 1954, this product remained unreleased until 2012, when it was found in the archives of the Le Corbusier Foundation in Paris.

Ooo La La Lighting!

Ooo La La Lighting!

The OOO lamp derives its name from the ultra-thin, perfectly circular plate that composes its shade. The swiveling shade is made possible by using a rotary joint and dual magnets that connect the tubular arm to the top and bottom plates. The result is a a sculptural lighting object with fewer parts, straightforward assembly, and easy functionality! Simply give the shade a light press to focus the light in any direction, or position it upright to hide direct light and create an ambient glow.

Braille Book Everything

Braille Book Everything

Imagine a world where the sight impaired can read almost any publication without it being specially printed in Braille. It will not only save the cost of a specialized printing but also make a lot more reading material accessible to the blind. The Blind Reader is a device that looks like a smartphone but functions like a text-to-Braille converter. Simply skim it over the paper publication and the surface transforms to Braille that can be easily read. Simple, effective and portable!

Steamy Apple Pie On The Go

Steamy Apple Pie On The Go

The kind of packaging redesign suggested with the UP is very convenient for the Pizza Pies that I buy from McDonalds. Where here it is intended for the fast food Apple Pie, the incisions in this package make it easy to handle and cool the pie while eating.

Safer Cooking With Kerosene

Safer Cooking With Kerosene

Kerosene stoves are popular with the rural folks, especially in Africa and India. Although they provide a cheaper option to cooking, most of the stove designs have this danger of bursting into flames or causing an explosion. The Indaba Kerosene Stove is a sleeker and safer cooking stove that employs several safety mechanisms.

Bed And Boat

Bed And Boat

Nest is a very playful air mattress that transforms into a zippy boat by manipulating the internal hooks. I love the visual delight that the network of red ropes and spring hooks conjure. They allow NEST’s internal structure to be changed and this can be done intuitively. You can hook and unhook ropes without needing to touch them directly; for the air mattress just manipulate the spring hooks while fewer hooks are needed for the boat. Ahoy captain!

The Color Of Music

The Color Of Music

The Serendipity Emotion Player is not your regular shuffle that plays music by genre or albums. It takes into account your emotional status by interpreting the color that your subconscious mind chooses and then plays songs accordingly. The player is equipped with a camera and the user is supposed to point it towards a colored object, for example if my mind takes fancy to the apple and I point the player towards it; the device interprets my mood based on the color therapy practice and plays songs accordingly.
