Alarming Ring

Ring is a vibrating alarm designed for people who hate the loud blaring sounds of a typical alarm. The charging cradle is where you set what time you want each ring to go off. The ring fits over the tip of your finger and when that opportune time arrives, it vibrates. Putting the ring back on the dock shuts off the alarm.

The benefits are two-fold. It’s perfect for couples whom wake up at different hours. Never again will you be disturbed from your precious sleep when the alarm goes off. It’s a discrete sensation that only you feel. Another application is for the hearing impaired helping to improve their quality of life.

I put together a paper my junior year, for my senior project at the U of U that was very similar to this… but it was back in 2000. Before blue tooth, micro engines and better battery tech… these three points is where my project died and didn’t make it to the next stage. while I am disappointed I didn’t follow it through… I am ecstatic that it might come from someone period. Great concept as well… smooth, sleek, colorful… I would buy in a heartbeat..

Wow, this is enormous! Is this actually the same clock that messures your heart rate and eye movement to wake you up at the ideal waking-time? I know this sounds horrendous, but I read there actually was an alarm that analysed your sleeping patterns and woke you up in between R.E.M. sleeping phases. Anyone know, which one that is?

This is what I have been waiting for. I cannot get up in the morning, and beeps just don’t do it for me… even worse, I can sleep through an alarm for over an hour. I think its because i listen to a lot of music, and used to wear headphones to go to sleep.

Whatever my problems are, I imagine this might be a great solution. Both my wife and I hate alarms, and we both work different shifts - she works rotating days and night.

I hope this becomes a marketable product, i think its perfect for young professionals and dual income families.

I wonder what reaction people would have to something vibrating them to wake them up? Suddon aggressive interruptions from deep sleep can apparently cause psychological problems and imsomnia.
On the other hand, the design aesthetics are unique and attractive (iPod-esque anyone?) but it works!
Great innovation for the deaf too!

what…like the billions of alarm clocks that are currently used?

That’s obviously not what I meant. I was referring to things like someone playing a prank and screaming right in your ear when you are deep asleep or a painting falling off a wall and crashing to the ground in your room etc

I know what it’s like to be waken up by vibrations. My first year at college my alarm didn’t wake me up, and my roommate started shaking my pillow. I woke up death freaked because I thought I was being electricuted. It wasn’t a good feeling. Not that the ring would stay on my finger; this needs to be a watch like device that would actually stay on me.

this could be a great idea. if i ever hear my alarm clock during the day or, this happened to me once, hear an alarm on television with the same ring as mine i will actually feel sick. a weird, sickly vibration runs through my torso and arms while my head slightly dazes. it’s classical conditioning at its best. i despise waking up early so much that the very sound of the thing that regularly wakes me makes me feel sickened. at least with this, it will be a vibration on my finger, hopefully unique enough, that won’t be experienced again during the day.

i think it is a very good idea but it needs more work, and a bit more thought. like have you thought about if it falls of? also a vibration would not wake me up when i am asleep and dont want to get up.

:) still cool though and i would buy one when and if they get released for sale.

Very handy for two people with different schedules who do not want to disturb each other. A snooze option on the rings would be handy. A smaller/travel version would be fabulous as well.

That is a lot of pingbacks. But it is a very novel idea, and a good one to prevent me from just shutting off my alarm clock and going back to bed.
