DIY Pap Smear?!

Sadly, 80% of cervical cancer cases (the 5th most common cancer in women worldwide) occur in low-to-middle income countries where routine checkups & tests aren’t readily available. The Self Smear Test aims to finally provide an economical, easier to operate diagnosis tool that can be operated from the comfort of one’s home. To ensure that users are consistent in their testing, the product includes 6 caps, enough for a 3 year period of testing once every 6 months. Interested to hear what the ladies think about this!

I think it’s a great idea! Like most women I dread my pap each and every time. On occasion it has caused severe anxiety attacks due to the invasive nature of the tests. The idea of being able to do the test myself in private without a person at the other end to cause loss of dignity is extremely appealing!!
6mthly is way too often however, studies have shown once every 2 yrs is sufficient, so perhaps a simpler disposable test would be preferable for western societies. I’m sure this invention would be rather expensive to produce. Perhaps a simple design based on the current spatulas currently used along with the thin-prep solution to be delivered to local dr or path lab… Just a thought. Good luck with this :)
