Collapsible Surfboard
As apartments and cars become increasingly compact, that surfboard you never seem to find the time to use just takes up more and more space. Nicholas Notara has decided to devote some time to the problem and has created the collapsible surfboard. This carbon-fiber board has been carefully designed to maintain the balance and weight of its traditional counterpart, but with the help of two pins and a quick release lever can halve in size. A hot-swappable fin system completes the board with style and presents a viable concept that may make a surfboard purchase not such a bad idea.
Designer: Nicholas Notara

What have YOU designed? I’m sorry, but this guy is having a go at designing something (and it has been designed VERY well) for a niche he has discovered in the market. If another previous design had been successful, obviously he wouldn’t have spent the time and money to design this one.
Also, the amount of publicity he has received from it (I have personally seen 3 TV segments on him now) is quite impressive.
I’m sure things like colour could be developed to prevent the “burning” someone else was concerned about.
And as for performance, I am fairly certain that (as a surfer himself), he would not be willing to compromise quality for a quick fix. Although, you will always get your old-school surfers who will never convert to carbon-fibre anyway.
I say, kudos to Nick. I think he’s done a great job, and that the design is incredibly well thought-out.
And to you - stop being a jealous basement-inventor. If you’d like to design something better, then go for it - stop ripping on other people’s SUCCESSFUL designs.

I think everyone’s missing the fact that with airlines making it harder and more cost prohibitive to travel with boards, something like this might be the way of the future.

Beautiful design… and just cuz its been explored before (i checked out those links) doesn’t mean it can’t be improved.
It does seem to have lots of parts, but for traveling I could definitely see this helping many surfers. Its so damn expensive to fly with boards.
It looks real but I can’t tell, pretty hot though.

exactly. this one is black carbon fiber. you show up on the beach with this, and you’ll be sure to scare at least the 8-year-olds …
AG says
I’d be worried about the extreme heat of black carbon fiber against my bare chest on a hot summer day, on white sand, in Miami. Or even carrying the board into the water. Also, the metal clips. Both of these colors/materials will actually burn (not hurt, but burn) human skin when exposed to extreme summer temperatures.
junior says
There is no surf in Miami. Surfboards are NEVER left in the sun because the wax melts. All carbon fiber boards are not a new concept — aircraft parts have been designed with all carbon fiber and epoxy resins for many years — surf board makers picked up on the idea, but carbon fiber is a lot more expensive than traditional s-glass and e-glass fiber used normally.
Temperatures are not a problem.

Okay, conceptually I would love to have this, but after surfing for 21 years I can say from experience that the materials used today allow for a necessary flex that this thing with it’s metal rod would not have. Also, and quite importantly you hit your board a lot. This, being reinforced with carbon fiber and sharp edged on the deck where your feet are would lead to many wounds. I would rather pay $35 to fix a ding in my board than to get stitches. Keep trying, the concept is very good, but not new.

Lovely! I’d love to see it in production!

PS Popes are long boards; this is a shortboard, JK.

I have a system that i tried to market in australia a few years ago, as “split bits” .
I think my production technique would be a lot simpler and less expensive. Can be done with normal boards.
Looking at this , it is an extension of pope, or pope has a patent infringement on his hands.
Nice marketing.

All i gots to say…. Insane! Its crazy how technology can improve a surfboard. Keep doing wut you guys are doing. Insane!

Not enough flex w. metal rod probz.
Don says
I need this board, it is only now that I realize that all the trials and tribulations I have faced as a man, have been purely due to the lack of a board like this.
Would like to add my name to the list of ‘would like to buy’ if it’s a possibility please let me know!
Ben Aylett says
Nice design and slick look.
I have seen variations on the theme but this is a very nice look.
Once concern is the colour of the deck. As everyone suggests, surface temperature will be an issue and while everyone else seems concerned about the comfort factor I have just realised that keeping wax on this will be very hard.
A definite candidate for deck grip which will limit the market as not everyone likes deck grip.
A pigmented finish for the deck and silicone or ABS plastic covers for the clips would address most practical issues.
