A New Scoop on Measuring Cups

A New Scoop on Measuring Cups

Measuring cup designs have changed throughout the years from the old metal design style to a more modern design. However, the newer designs have always been on the cool side of design, but far from being reliable. A New York design company, Pollen Design, has created a newer version of the measuring cup called NuScup. NuScup, is an adjustable measuring scoop that comes with a co-molded seal.

Say Goodbye to Messy Cables

Say Goodbye to Messy Cables

Having the latest in technology is great-every gadget you can think of all the better. Yet with those tech pieces comes a wired mess. Studio Manzano has designed a couple of new products to help out with the messy tangled wires that may be on display in your home. The Powerblock, is a shield that hides all of the tangled mess of wires connected to all of your gadgets.

Smarter Clothing Care Labels

Smarter Clothing Care Labels

Coming from a fashion design background, I find it surprising 70% of people don’t read the care labels and when they do, it’s usually too late. That’s why something like the clothTag concept might make caring for clothes a lot easier.

Styrofoam Sofa

Styrofoam Sofa

Designer Kwangho Lee thought it would be clever to take old sheets of styrofoam and mold them into furniture. Now before birds, polar bears, rabbits, and treehuggers clobber me, I want to say it’s just a concept. Nobody is really going to make styrofoam furniture. But to the material’s credit, it does get warmer the longer you sit on it.

Is all industrial design software the same?

Is all industrial design software the same?

Mike Hudspeth from Machine Design talks about what to look for in ID software. Today there are many. Besides Alias ($25,000), good packages include Rhino ($895), ICEM ($2,300 and up), NX (a lot, depending on what bundle you pick), and even SolidWorks ($3,995). So besides price, how do you decide? The only significant differences between programs are capability and interface. When selecting ID software, look for these capabilities:

Need More Cabinet Space

Need More Cabinet Space

I don’t know about you, but I am tired of looking in my cabinets at all the different size and shapes of plates and bowls that seem to eat up all the storage space. Bowls for soups and salads, small plates and large plates-the list goes on forever. Now with a new design from Aleksey Belyalov, my problem of lack of storage space is now history. 2Side is a design that has brought together two different types of plates and made them into one.

It's a PC, No It's a Lamp. Wait, It's Kinda Both

It’s a PC, No It’s a Lamp. Wait, It’s Kinda Both

Turning Lamp is a PC mounted on a lamp base. It uses tactile interfaces people are familiar with when turning lamps on so a pull of a cord activates one of the 4 faces. Each face can display something different, i.e. – weather, news, email, music player, etc.

Plants Fall Over When Thirsty

Plants Fall Over When Thirsty

Just like people, plants fall over when they begin to die from thirst but unlike people, plants can’t verbally communicate when they need watering. That’s where the Roly-Poly Pot comes in. Using water a a counterweight, the pot slowly tips over when water levels are low. The cool thing is each pot can be adjusted to work with any plant’s watering needs. Neat idea but still a concept for now.

Can You Hook Me Up with One of Those?

Can You Hook Me Up with One of Those?

Here is a new design, that we haven’t seen a lot of lately. I personally do not own a coat hanger, because the past designs have been, well, quite boring, and do not fit with the style of my home. Here we have a very modern and stylish coat hanger that can work perfectly in any home environment, and one you would be pleased to have on display.

Scrunch, Flip, Flip, Tumble

Scrunch, Flip, Flip, Tumble

No, I am not talking about a new dance that is the latest craze, but about a new eco-friendly bag designed by Hetal Jariwala and Eva Bauer called 24/7. These two designers met while attending Stanford’s Product Design graduate program and hit it off so well, that they started their own green company called Flip and Tumble. The idea behind the bag is that the designers were moving to a greener lifestyle and wanted to use their reusable bags.

High Tech Napkins

High Tech Napkins

We saw several napkin idea concepts last year but this is the first to utilize e-ink and RF technology. The Napkin PC is designed for group collaborations. Each pen transmits your doodles to the base station which is a PC in disguise. That information gets processed and displayed on the napkin like e-ink paper. Cool idea but someone better make sure nobody decides to wipe their dirty lunch stains with one.

Easy Writing For The Disabled

Easy Writing For The Disabled

You may not put much thought into it but it takes a symphony of small muscles in your hand to operate a pen/pencil. For some people this is beyond their ability so designer Oskar Daniel set out to create a pen the Easy Writer.
