Shovel, Rake Or Blow; Take Your Pick

Shovel, Rake Or Blow; Take Your Pick

The “Silver Generation” as referred to by designer Theresa is an ageing, independent lot who rely on simple technology to help them perform their daily chores. Stuff like mowing the lawn, shoveling the driveway or raking the leaves was once done by their children for allowances, is now to be done by them. BUD – E is meant to help this generation (who is most often bogged with some age-related medical issue) do such outdoor tasks with ease and independence. The biggest USP…a single machine performs all the aforementioned tasks.

Mighty Big Vase!

Mighty Big Vase!

For the VIVID FESTIVAL in the land Down Under, designer Warren Langley had the installation Vessel of (Horti) Cultural Plenty showcased. Fashioned as this huge pot with plenty of illuminated flowers in it, the installation was smart enough to utilize 84 strand lateral emission fiber optic cables and just three low energy metal halide globes, 450W in total, to create almost 200m of linear light. What was even smarter was the construction of the vessel: vandal resistant materials like galvanized steel & laminated sheet iron and plywood.

Intelligent Hose

Intelligent Hose

Knowledge is a powerful tool and it empowers you to make better choices. Like we all know that while washing our car or hosing the lawn we should use minimum water. My question is how do we derive what is minimal when we don’t know exactly how much we consume. We use 80-100 gallons of water per day; now this is real figure to work on and make amends to. Likewise the Measuring Consumption water sprayer displays how much water is consumed during your watering/washing activities; urging you to be a conscious consumer.

Fork, Spoon... Cheese-grater?

Fork, Spoon… Cheese-grater?

We get some weird submissions here at Yanko, that’s for sure. What say you is the greatest combination of two tools in the history of humankind? The spork, of course! And here’s what might be the next step in human evolution. Not only is this tool, the “Implement Six,” a fork, not only is it a spoon… it’s a cheese grater. It can grate your cheese and you can eat it too! Just what I need for camping.

Savior In Deep Waters

Savior In Deep Waters

Generally the focus is always on rapid action response kinda systems that help provide relief during disasters. The flat-pack recovery Rescue Boat seen here is not for rapid response but for post-disaster scenarios. The focus is on a systematic, reliable vessel that will help recover cargo and victims. It is stored and transported in its stackable 9″-deep form, with pontoon tubes detached; till its services are required.

A Totally Different View

A Totally Different View

360° View is an outdoor camera system that captures the exotic thrills of extreme sports from amazing angles. The setup consists of three small waterproof video cameras with adapters, a display module and an external trigger. This means you get three different perspectives of the particular trick or maneuver. You can either place the cams stationary or mount it on the athlete via the adapter. What’s interesting is that if no help is around, the athlete can independently record the tricks via the external trigger.

Storms Checked at the Door

Storms Checked at the Door

Sorry, no hurricanes allowed in here. We spent all of one afternoon installing these here hurricane shutters on the entrances so you should probably take a hint, mister hurricane. What we have here is a solution to the aches and pains one must go through to install hurricane shutters on doors and windows when the season arrives. These are made of Lexan, which is normally a hurt to drill through - with Sachin Mistry’s shutters, the shutters stay fresh, minty, and un-screwed!

Step Up If You Wanna Have Some Fun

Step Up If You Wanna Have Some Fun

Tired of your skateboard and rollerblades and fishing for some new way to pump your adrenalin? Stepboard is here to answer that call, and it does so in a very “safe” way; without the risks of the bone-crushing sport! Two boards on a frame that advance by pumping the back board down with one foot and making it turn using the front board as an axis. To stop you can use the disc-brake system, gesture-controlled by a hand command just as if it was a mountain-board. The flip-side is that it’s not a speed-monster and it doesn’t boast precise maneuverability.

Dual System Bike

Dual System Bike

Tired of pedaling around Seattle and San Francisco due to the topography; no worries when you have designers like Brian considering the options for us. The Cykle is a project modeled on the Bike Share systems that is popular around Europe, and it combines both muscle power and electric power to function. Steep slopes and rugged terrain can be tackled by switching over to the electric mode, and scenic by-lanes can be enjoyed by pedaling around.

Artsy Electric Pole

Artsy Electric Pole

I forgive you for mistaking this as an art instillation, but I guess that was the whole point behind designing the amazing Yggdrasil Electric Pole. Svenska Kraftnät (the folks who run the Swedish national electrical grid) approved of this design and the poles will be placed as a portal on either side of an entry high way to Stockholm, Sweden. So if you’re making a road trip to Sweden in the year 2010-11, expect to these dynamic poles greet you at the fringe of the cityscape. BTW Yggdrasil refers to the holy world tree in Norse Mythology.

Non-plastic Plastic Pot

Non-plastic Plastic Pot

Packit Potz is an attempt to do away with the plastic pots that most green-thumbed folks resort to these days. This flat pack version is more sustainable and is designed boost the growth of the plants through natural means. After its done living like a pot, it doubles up a micro greenhouse and an insect and slug repellent, which hopefully will increase the yield of crops or lifespan of plants. It’s made from Low Opacity Polypropylene and apparently production and transportation costs are minimal.

New Play In The Playground

New Play In The Playground

Teewns is a very complex age-group; in my times there were just pre-teens and teens, but given the current scenario, damn shrinks have further broken down the age-groups! Getting back to the tweens (ages 6-14); the Playnetix Tumbler devised here is a full motion play structure meant for them. It’s an attempt to get the kids off their butt and lure them away from their videogames and TV. Besides providing tons of laughs, the play action indirectly results in core fitness and much-needed physical activity.
