The 100% Design Exhibitions are a great time to mingle with the cream of the Design Industry and I really had a great time covering the Tokyo Edition. The theme this year was “Love Green” and the Exhibitors did a great job interpreting and weaving in the sentiments into their designs. The theme was well reflected in products made using alternative energy sources and natural materials. In short everything looked green too, I mean the color green!

This year’s EUR 12,000 prize money has been claimed by Johanna Schoemaker for the brilliant Clam I OLED Lamp, and she even gets the opportunity to intern for six-months at The Braun design department. Other Top 3 from the 22 finalists include Karsten Willmann for Skylino, Stephan Zimmermann for Anemone and Tobias Stuntebeck for White Cane.

My goodness! Welcome to the future! Electrolux Design Lab 2009! Each of these designs is made to work in the world for the next 90 years. *OH my mistake, one is made to work outside the world. The brief stated that each item be able to prepare and store food, wash clothes, and/or do dishes over the next nine decades. Behold this limited list of robotics and flying things!

Besides hosting the usual buffet of seminars and workshops for their Swarna 2009 Degree Show, folks at Industrial Design Centre IIT Mumbai had a spectacular exhibition for their graduating class. Although I got to sift through the Industrial Design, Animation Design, Visual Communication and Interaction Design faculties, I naturally gravitated towards the ID section. Tokyo Fiber SENSEWARE was started as a project to show the merits of Japan’s fibers. SENSEWARE refers to materials or mediums that arouse a creative desire in people. This is part 1 of our coverage on the ‘09 SENSEWARE exhibition in Milano. In 2007 we saw televisions made of fabric small and squishy enough to coddle in your hand. This year the projects continue to amaze.
