Our Picks from the 2011 red dot awards!

Our Picks from the 2011 red dot awards!

Nearly 4500 entries were submitted for the 2011 red dot judges to review! After a meticulous, hands-on study of each submitted product they finally narrowed it down to 793 winners of the “red dot” award, 154 “honourable mention” award winners, as well as 59 “best of the best” awards reserved for well… the best of the best! We’re impressed that the judges tackled 4500 original entries when we could barely keep our hands off all 900+ winning designs! We did, however, manage to narrow it down to 10 that we just couldn’t keep our eyes off of…

Design with Unseen Waves

Design with Unseen Waves

This year, Milanese design fair Salone De Mobile turned 50 years young, & to celebrate, Ezri Tarazi & the d-Vision Group looked 50 years to the future to waves of a frequency currently undiscovered by man. This frequency, as they imagine it, is called the “ultra-gamma ray.” The five giant lighting structures represent the ray & change in hue & light intensity via the central station. Sure it’s whimsical, but it’s also a profound reminder that we’ve only just scratched the surface of possibility.

Smell on Display

Smell on Display

How do you show a smell?  No, I’m not talking about mirrored shelves at Sephora. I’m talking pure scent. En Esencia is an olfactory exhibition that seeks to answer this question by showcasing smells in two ways. In the first, the Pure Perception Room, “sniffers” stand under isolated boxes that are designated to specific scents. The perfume is then released, creating an untainted and pure olfactory experience for the user. The second showcase, the Lab Room, is the analytical and descriptive space of the exhibition where visitors can see the inspirations and formulas for individual scents.

Wartime Decor, Modern and Upscale

Wartime Decor, Modern and Upscale

The KALAB Exhibition features military surplus and “souvenirs” turned into enigmatic furniture and home decor. Born out of the Israeli conflict, there’s a strong mixture between military and civilian life – defining the culture. Vases made out of bomb shells, ashtrays made from extinct bullets and a sofa stacked like a dugout. It raises questions of security and confronts the idea of civilians playing the part of the soldier.

Marginal Notes Inspires Design

Marginal Notes Inspires Design

One morning, Note Design Studio scribbles in the margins of old sketches and notes. They were just random ideas, visual brainstorms in passing to help illustrate key ideas but never saw the light of day. They fell in love with these scribbles and embraced their odd proportions, diverse materials and lack of clever functions. Some were left for later but others were pushed further, into the physical world. In the end it became an exhibition called what else, MARGINAL NOTES.

CES 2011 Part 3

CES 2011 Part 3

Just three days into CES, the buffet foods, complimentary candies, sleepless nights, coffee and energy drinks are taking their toll on everyone, everyone but me because I came prepared. I’m dressed to the nines, rocking my freshly knitted tabi boots, constantly sucking on my Water Bobble, here to bring you part 3 of our coverage.

Yanko Design @ FEED And Valencia Design Week

Yanko Design @ FEED And Valencia Design Week

It’s an honor for Yanko Design to be considered as one of the most influential modern design sites, and be invited to the most happening events across the globe; FEED (First International Design Media and Bloggers Meeting) at the Valencia Design Week being one of them. While we partied hard with the hosts, designers and contemporaries, we also indulged in some serious design discussions and got insights to various streams of arts, designing and ceramics. Leaving aside the drama (we got pick pocketed) and the jet-lag (18-hour flight), overall we had a wonderful experience. Here is a compilation of all the fun stuff that our trigger-happy camera managed to capture.

Slow and Steady Wins EDL 2010, The Snail!

Slow and Steady Wins EDL 2010, The Snail!

Eight amazing designers from around the would took turns presenting their ideas to a panel of four very tough judges. We were taken aback by the amazing mockups Electrolux provided. This was a dream come true for many as it is often rare to see a physical model of your design. We felt nervous at the pit of our stomachs for them. The judges scrutinized every nuance of each concept. They praised what needed to be praised, but made sure each designer knew where the flaws were – perhaps a good lesson.
