Mass Production Gets Personal
Mass manufacturing doesn’t mean that products must sacrifice variation & individuality. Focusing on this concept, designer Thomas Hunt developed Mea, a line of ceramic tableware that allows users to personalize individual pieces through the use of ceramic additive manufacturing. Upon ordering, users simply input the date, time, location, & a personalized message which is then codified in an attractive & unique pattern onto the exterior of the object. An outstanding gift idea that won’t be soon forgotten.
The user’s direct involvement contributes to the co-creation process with the designer while strengthening the bond between user & object, increasing the emotional value of the product through the investment of time. Each item is presented in it’s own box along with a guide detailing the memory surrounding the design & instructions for deciphering the coded information.

I don’t think the designer is too familiar with mass production methods…

Unless you read the article and discover it is produced via additive manufacturing – i.e. not mass production.

A really nice result of some rather abstract thinking, I like it.

Not quite a mass production method but an interesting idea still
