Emotional Backpack For Cyclists, What Fun!
Here is a totally cool backpack that goes by the name of SEIL Bag. It’s a backpack meant for cyclists and features an LED Display (flexible PCB) on its face. The bag is designed to work in two modes: Driving Mode and Emotion Mode. In the Driving Mode it shows left and right turn signals for the rider, which is controlled via a detachable controller. This makes it easy for the following traffic to know the riders intent. The cool-quotient is upped with the Emotion Mode; here you can display a variety of emoticons, just for the heck of it.
The bag also displays brake signal, cruse signal and emergency signal; the acceleration sensor detects speed and turns on stop signal automatically. The signals can be controlled intuitively; pushing the lever up, turns on left turn signal and vice versa.
A very classy bag with a lot of use, I really dig the emoticon aspect!

I’ve been pondering about light signals for cyclists as well. The problem with hand signals is that you need both hands on the steering bar while turning, so this might be a good idea. But, the design doesn’t consider traffic coming from the front and the sides; they need info too! In this case, hand signaling (maybe augmented with light-emitting bracelets) is still the better design.

This is an awesome safety device, especially for wheelchair users though one might wish to add some kind of amber blinking "caution" lite as an addition and maybe a PLEASE CALL 911 type signal for those times when things go wrong.
I love this concept!

Great idea. Perhaps cars could have a complimentary device like a yellow flashing light at each corner.
They used to have them at one time in the UK but they are being discontinued. Or it would seem that way.

an emotional backpack for cyclists. for being on the road the can make signals via backpack so drivers behind them know what they're doing. pretty smart.

I just found these, which takes care of the problem that you’ve addressed, since you still use the hand signals with these light-up gloves. And, very importantly, they are only like, $10 bucks!
