A Span Of Lights
I’m not a big fan of study-table lamps simply because I can’t stand the surrounding darkness. Always creeps me out, but I’m sure most of you students need to invest in one. Sharing dorm rooms, you can’t disturb your mates right! So when you use one…how much light is sufficient for you? How about a lamp that lets you decide the luminance. Swipe a finger or span your palm to get “As Much As You Need Light”. Just the right amount of focus and light!

really nice presentation !

Sorta redundant but so stylish, haha. And if it actually saves a sufficient amount of energy, so much the better.

Since your target market is students, do you think it can be made cheaply? REALLY cheaply, to fit a student budget? A simple 3-mode switch might be better: off / 50% / 100% light.

exactly, one led that dims will have the same candela output. why use 50 leds some of which will never be used unless you want the light to be very bright. you can still swipe to alter intensity. but these already exist.

One of the things right now designing with LED’s is that once the LEDs go bad, you can’t replace them and you have to throw the whole lamp away. there is nothing here that tells me this is any different.

its truly true, always tempted to buy a nice led lighting but couldnt exactly for that reason.

I thought LEDs were touted to “never” burn out? None of my LEDs have ever burned out.

Really coo concept, but the hight itself seems quite low. I love the concept!!

OH wow! This is amazing! I WANT ONE!

I love not only the gesture feature, but the shape of the lamp. I’ve always had trouble with incandescents and CFLs because they give out circular light when my desk is a skinny rectangle.

It looks a lot like the Herman Miller Leaf light.

This looks cool but coming from a fixture design perspective the placement of the LED's in relation to the task plane is too close and will create a glare/hot spot on the horizontal work surface. The design seems to be purely form driven and does not consider the correct optical design for a diffused light distribution. Is the lamp constructed out of metal? If so, perhaps you should try to integrate some heat sinking/fins to increase the surface area to provide a higher thermal path. And with the controls, with such a low profile design and minimal clearance between the LED source and touch sensitive panel, heat issues may cause problems for long term reliability. With current off the shelf products, such a design would be very difficult to achieve. Nonetheless, I like the form. Cheers.

This is a very nice idea, for sometimes you dont want it to be too dark or too bright.
