Color Rubik Cube For The Blind
The last Rubik Cube that we saw on Yanko Design had textures as tease for the visually challenged; this current iteration uses only Braille. Colors embossed include green, blue, red, yellow, white & pink. One of the more sensible concepts in a long time that hopefully will delight the sighted folks too! Maybe we’ll learn Braille in this process!

ok this looks like…..
a 3d cad project in school.
nice rendering.

They seemed like such fiendish puzzles for years, then recently I learnt all you have to do is memorize the rotation algorithms. Sure you won’t solve it very fast but you’ll do better than most. Sadly I only ever bothered memorizing how to solve one cube face.
beno says
1 cube face requires no algorithm ;D noob (:

Doesn’t look that hard. It’ll definitely be a little longer than the usual coloured cube, but I’m pretty sure I can do it in a decent time.

i love it, what do blind people think of it?
Design Porn says
Someone make this and sell it to me.

wouldn’t be better to have more recognizable shapes like squares, triangles, etc?
in this way it becomes a product for all (not only for the visual impaired) and also international because it’s not based on language
cheers

already thought of. This is all old news.

My braille is a little rusty, but this doesn’t look like English braille. I think it’s German (I’m reading “rot”. I assume that’s red)

How to make one confusing thing confusinger, I have a sudoku Rubiks cube, now thats hard.

Too bad it’s all white. Not everyone has a complete loss of their vision.
Recognizable shapes also seems like a great idea.

very interesting idea

Why would you use the names of colours for a device for blind people who may never have seen colour? Couldn’t you use names of fruits or animals or just tactile patterns. Strange idea!
JPM says
Good idea, but in the process of making the cube accessible to blind people, you made it unusable for the majority. Why all white?
I do realize that it makes for a nicer picture, but isn’t design supposed to make your life easier?
Make a cube that anyone, blind or not, can use!
AMN says
it’s not unusable for the majority at all. it’s much more of a cognitive challenge, having to rely on tactile memory rather than visual memory. it’s an excellent tool for building your tactile memory. and anyway, the “majority” that you speak of have many more options, tools, games at their disposal than do the “minority”, and is it really so unfair to provide a challenge to someone else that you can’t access? that’s a bit selfish.

as if the original wasn’t hard enough. I’d like to see a video of someone completing it.

Done. Here is TV Raman from Google doing it:

Yes. Give it to a blind person for a week and a sighted person for a week. Then have them compete. Just guesssing, but my mother-in-law (blind since the age of 5) would totally whip any sighted person by a factor of 10. I would LOVE to buy this for her.
AMN says
I too, would love to buy one! I can’t seem to find where it is available, though. Anyone?

It has to work better than this method:

Awesome idea!!
dianatorres.m says
that’s interesting but why dont you make this for normal and blind people?… you can put colors on too.
Margot says
Actually, sad to say, most blind people could not find a use for this. Braille is a great idea, but very very few blind people have the opportunity to learn it. Think about how much more expensive it would be to print anything in Braille than to do it normally. It is cost prohibitive, so they just don’t do it. Luckily, there are books on cd, and now products like Kindle, so they can still enjoy books. But Braille? too expensive for most. Sad but true.
nycdesigner says
Would be even better to simply add the braille to the colored version so that sighted folks could help blind folks in using the cube.
I know it looks cool all white, but it’s less functional.
Oscar says
as a Designer I agree with some points posted here: Making recognizable shapes is cheaper and easyer. It looks awesome all white, but still… must be cool to solve it, anyway. The rendering is quite good, BUT the reflections on the corners are screaming: RENDER!!!!
Sorry for the bad english!

Really incredible!

I’d vote to:
* replace the braille for shapes (dots for green, stripes for blue, X’es for red, and so on)
* put actual color in the cube’s faces, so that people with vision can use it too

Uh, writing the color name in braille seems like the most convoluted and… okay, I’ll say it, dumbest solution possible. Rather than an easy-to-feel shape you have a word that has to be read from the correct orientation. A raised shape would be easier, faster to play, and ready for a universal audience.

If I can do that finally I’ll learn the colours in braille and I’ll do the cube without see it… I’m completely sure about that xD

Yellow (Gelb) is spelt incorrectly.
It appears more like “GEV B”.

Awesome idea, I’m gonna tell all the blind people I know to come to this website and have a look, see if they think it’s a good idea too.

That is amazing, how the blind can now actually get the pleasure of solving one of history’s most famous puzzles.

Great idea. i would love to try to solve this puzzle. The idea of not being able to see the colours or textures would be a real test to my senses.

you need to have a really high IQ to be able to remember where all the colors are. Then, think about how to twist them. Waste of brain cells.

My coder is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on a number of websites for about a year and am nervous about switching to another platform. I have heard excellent things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress posts into it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
