NYC Helmet, I’m Giddy With Excitement
Commissioned by the city of New York, the NYC Bike Helmet is designed with every rider, every season and a greener environment in mind. The modular system has a protective polystyrene inner shell and a soft fabric outer cover with integrated straps. Each owner can customize and personalize the outer cover, which easily separates from the protective shell for better storage and cleaning.
Giddy much? I know I am. I’ve been looking for a helmet for ages since I started bicycling for fun. I’m just an urban commuter so I don’t need the slick aerodynamics found in many helmets, not to mention helmet hair is not cool. This one seems to provide adequate protection without making me look like a poser. I’m also surprised by the number of high profile designers involved in the project. Somebody, anybody – send me one please?
Designers: Yves Béhar, Josh Morenstein, Nick Cronan, Matt Swinton, & Giuseppe Della Salle of fuseproject

Are these going to actually be available at some point in the future? I need a helmet, and that one is nice.

Growing up my brother and I *loathed* wearing our helmets, because they made us look like mushroom people.
And now we have a design like this… Looks fantastic, I’m diggin’ the fabric/plastic combo, and can imagine how great it would be in the winter to have my ears covered (because let’s face it, no earmuffs look cool).
Awesome stuff. Can’t wait until this is available for purchase.

This is a safety liability. Helmets have a hard shell to decrease friction with other surfaces during an accident. Used to be cyclists would break their necks from endo’s because the helmet would grip the road while the person’s momentum carried them on. There are safer methods of keeping warm than this.

Kavenator is right. how is this one going to get approved?

Nice ideas, but not my kind of style. There should be a competition where all helmet designers come together to design the perfect one. The winner sould be rewarded with millions of dollars. If all people would wear one, there would be less costs for helath insurances.
benefits for all

I agree with kavenator, there are better ways of keeping the ears warm… wool cap and a pro cyclist helmet above. the bike messengers can testify this.

This seems like a normal skater-style helmet with optional coverings, which already exist (albeit in Europe).

I’m sure the fabric could be treated with something to solve the problem kavenator mentioned that everyone co-signed on.
I think it looks great.
