Not Your Typical Dishwasher

Most dishwashers are the size of a washing machine, taking up as much space. What if you are a small family unit or a singleton? You don’t need such a huge size for 2 plates, a glass and some dishes? The Instant Dishwasher addresses these questions and comes off as this table-top version that integrates comfortably into your kitchen counter. A sliding top reveals a pull-up basket for your dishes, and more importantly it’s placed right next to the sink for easy plumbing and waste disposal.

Designer Nick Smigielski presents “Morphware”, a plate-transforming internet-connected dish creator. What it does, in the same way you download and use items from the internet, is allow you to download designs for your food-holding objects, turning regular disks into the plate of your dreams!

Ultimate Modular Kitchen For 2050

Modular kitchens of the future seem to have the basics in place but little can be said about the supporting technology. For example the Elements Modular Kitchen has wall mounted appliances that range from fridge, air-conditioner, lighting and cooking modules. You can add or choose the modules that are best suited for your home. Each unit works independently but can be seamlessly work together via wireless smart networking. They draw power (wirelessly) thru ‘powermat’ technology applied to the wall, and this is supplemented with solar energy when required.

Food Storage Orchestra

What better way to store your gobs and gobs of food than with a full band? This is the “Food Symphony” by Chow Pei Huan, Ho Wen Chi, and Chua Kai Ren, designing conceptually for Electrolux. In a way that, as far as I know, has never been done before, this big box can store food, and store it well. In individual storage units with adjustable temperature settings it stores, sensing the integrity of the food inside as it does so. This is the sort of thing you’ll wonder how you lived without.

A Quad of Energy Efficiency

There’s a clock, a fridge, a dishwasher, and an “app.” Together, like an action team out to get the bad guys, they’re going to regulate. Like the singer Warren G, they’re going to take command of your house, helping you know how each piece of it is running, helping you keep your energy consumption to a minimum. The only one that needs any extra equipment is the app, which, incase you’ve been living under a rock on the moon for the past few years, means it’s an application made specifically for a phone or other handheld “smart” device. You can see it all from there.

As promised, here are the details on the Electrolux Bio Robot Refrigerator, a concept that has been making quite a splash in the blogosphere! In lay terms, the fridge is a concept where the Bio Robot cools biopolymer gel through luminescence. A non-sticky gel surrounds the food item when shoved into the biopolymer gel, creating separate pods. The design features no doors or drawers, and the food items are individually cooled at their optimal temperature thanks to the robot.

We have been exploring the various ways to get the perfect coffee fix while completely ignoring our other addiction, CHOCOLATE! My apologies. It wasn’t till Ahmad Bittar brought to my notice the Maya Machine. Now Maya means illusion, so let’s get swept up in this fantasy express. Maya is completely dedicated to the chocolate cause, it’s similar to the espresso machine, but doesn’t use crass powders to bring out the choco-licious flavors. It uses special pods of real chocolate that melts & blends into steamed fresh milk. Giving you the perfect velvet-chocolate experience.

It’s not always easy to predict the future. For its 2010 competition, Electrolux Design Lab went with the theme: The 2nd Space Age; this essentially translating to designing a home environment for the year 2050, when 74% of the global population are predicted to live in urban areas. Student designers had to predict how people will prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes. Quite a task but plenty of surprises from across the globe! If we talk about the future of dining (everyday home meals), it’s quite alright to assume ready-to-eat steaks and pot roast being available in capsules. Compact food meaning easier to cook and clean-up and this is where the Electrolux Eco Cleaner, a portable, compact dishwasher comes in play. Using ultrasonic waves to ionize food particles on the dishes, this dishwasher converts the food/grease to reusable compost for plants. Thereby waste will no longer be waste, but healthy meals for the greens. Squeaky Clean dishes, just a by-product!

This thing makes coffee and spits out music. What more do you want? What more COULD you want? More? Alright well you’re in luck because this “Appresso” device does all that you want. It’s Android based. That means it’s amazing by itself. Then it makes coffee. Delicious coffee mmmm. It uses the Android technology to tell you info about the taste and scent of the coffee, then also reads QR-codes* from each coffee capsule, playing a specific song based on which pack you’ve scanned! My triple caffeinated cap plays Yanni in the morning.

Mmm, foods taste so good stir fried in a wok. Problem is this culinary technique generates a lot of smoke most of which gets sucked up in overhead hoods but what about people who don’t have full kitchens? The Eliminate Smoke Wok saves the day. The handle hides a carbon filter and fan. Switch on the fan and smoke gets absorbed into the activated carbon.

The KitchenAid Variable Grill is Tempur-Pedic bliss to your burgers. The top surface of the grill is split into more than a hundred individual surfaces that completely envelope food. This provides a fuller grilling experience from all sides. The cool thing is each unit only turns on when it senses food thereby saving energy (sic). Interesting concept. DO WANT!
