A New Look at Drains
At a time when we see most designers concentrating on personal products, we have here InHo Lee who is concerned about the ways to improve public drains. His Filter Sewer is system that segregates trash (like leaves) from wet waste and allows drains to remain clog-free. The system also allows the authorities to place odor-removing (or absorbing) tablets, and keep the streets fragrant. Now the latter half may be a tall order to consider, but on the whole I think the idea is neat.

Seems like a good idea. In the autumn, these would need cleaning every (rainy)day, though. That would cost a lot of man-hours, even though it is much easier to clean than regular street drains…
Shame people don’t keep the streets neat, the city always has to do that job…

I think there should be something to allow it to swing open when its under great pressure. What happens if there is a flood for example? We don’t want all these clogged drains not allowing much water through. However if it was to swing open under the pressure of the water and thus allow the water through it would be much smarter.
after all, drains are meant to drain water.
Just my 2 cents.

Or there could be an emergency drain placed a little higher like in your sink. This would ensure it didn’t swing open when an object lands on it and would ensure that the water could drain before overflowing.

If it’s to keep out debris, then wouldn’t a a leaf-catcher in the pool kind of design also work? This is a good design, but it looks expensive to have everywhere and after being clogged, it might not let in as much water.

Ganz toll! Awesome.
We have drains like that in Germany everywhere.
Every few month people from the city come and clean the lower grid from leaves. And the buttom is not for folding. You have to lift it up, the whole lid.
It becomes dirty and rusty, that is why there is no folding mechanism or anything. Just heavy steel.
But its good, If your keys go down the drain, you just need two guys to lift up the cover.
