One Perfect Cup
The Utopik Design Lab have done it! They’ve taken our entire collected evolution of cup-making and holding of drink history and combined it into one cup. One cup to hold them all. This is “One Glass for Every Drink” and it’s made to work for everyone. It of course tends to the four main glass-specific types of drink: water, cognac, wine, and champagne. It uses the same head and a different base for each of these. Sounds lovely doesn’t it? Let’s have a sip or two and converse.
This isn’t the first interchangeable base cup we’ve had here on Yanko, and it wont be the last. It’s a fantastic idea and deserving of a slew of attempts at it in order to make it perfect. Here’s one with some really fabulous ideas, and rather elegant ones if I do say so myself.
And while we’re at it, I’ve got to say that my favorite drink glass in the world must be the snifter – looked after here closely by that cognac glass on it’s side. Very sassy. Very nice. Very on it’s side where it definitely aught to be, havin a great time.

Why is the champagne base designed so you can't set it down on a table?

because its sleek and obviously since its not out of a screw top bottle or a big box you dont understand

Chris, it seems you very clearly understand absolutely nothing about champagne or the consumption thereof. Troll elsewhere.

Agreed. That's a terribly shaped glass for champagne!

Oh yes because thats what is important in the world. I hope you choke on that cork.

Champagne is not generally a sit down drink, it tends to be served at parties , or to couples in hotels who would likly empty the glas before setting it down.
Logan Thomas says
Conceivably, you would simply use the base of the wine glass as the base of the Champagne glass… should you choose to do so. "Think outside the box," as Chris above might say…

that makes it the wineglass….its the same glass minus the (wine glass) base. did you not notice?

well, this stem creates the advantage for the heavy drink and his or her mate. For the lite weight of the two is unable to place the champagne down, thus must drink vigorously to have the ability to use both hands once again, eventually leading in a quick intoxication and date rape. That is the purpose of these outstanding contemporary glass: date rape
Mjs says
Actually its shaped that way because some champainge flutes are meant to be placed in a tall vase like container when not in use. They look reminiscent of flowers in a vase when several are set down. Otherwise they are just held and not put on a table by themselves.

Wow there are great wines from screw caps and boxes a like! I very much enjoy a casual wine that will never be corked! I agree it's slick and enjoy the glass very much so. Though that's a low blow throwing screw caps and boxes under the bus!

Some might say “who would ever put a champagne glass down anyway!” – Personally, i tend to think it is nice to have a base or even a tiny trivet, however small, it's pleasant to hold – as opposed to the lollypop feeling i would get from holding the Champ's glass here! – and to stand it down , at some point, without the risk of it rolling away – yes a slight design flaw i think. but all very jolly all the same.

COOL DESIGN. NO NEED FOR A BASE FOR THE CHAMPAGNE VERSION. HOLD IT AS LONG AS THE BOTLE IS NOT DRIED OUT.
Troy says
It's an interesting exercise, and the stemware is attractive, but it just wouldn't attract more sophisticated wine drinkers. To appreciate different kinds of wine such as red, white, and sparkling, you really need a different shaped bowl for each. This is why a champagne flute is tall and narrow, a red wine glass is wide and bulbous, and white lies somewhere in the middle. The design looks like it would work for water or white wine, and perhaps liquor, but would leave red wine little room for the bouquet to develop, and would disperse the effervescence of the sparkling wine too quickly, leaving it flat. It just wouldn't work. Sorry.
Brad says
Nice, thank you. I feel like people who really care about wine would be like, "screw this," or something like that. And people who don't drink wine all the time, or champagne, or cognac, would be like, "N/A," or something like that. I'm the latter, so I would only use water glasses. And, come on, water glasses can look like anything they want, as long as they have a big bowl and a place in which to place your lips. For instance, a lava lamp, drained out, would suffice.
The point is, wine drinkers hate this, as explained by Troy better than myself. And the other people who drink wine out of a box, like myself, wouldn't waste their money or their mind on it.
casstic says
well i think it's cute.
but probably would just stick with the $4-for-20 wine glasses i have.

I was thinking the same thing. Also, I'm not too sure about cognac, but I know that brandy (it's cousin), needs a much larger ballooned glass, although the mouth is about the right size.

Definitely a clever idea. Wouldn't want to own them because it would be a pain to constantly switch, but I like the way you're thinkin'.

Nicely done.
(but unfortunately the shape seems also very important for the flavor of a drink, and that's perhaps why there are "wine glass" and so on)

I love this design, however I'm not sure why I'm forced to hold the champagne the entire time I'm drinking it. The cognac is very clever, and overall it has a very unique touch of class that isn't over the top or 'elitist.' Very nice!

I agree with the above posters, if you really don't care if your glass helps to accentuate the flavour of the wine/champagne, why not just drink it from a mug? no need to buy more glasses

The cognac glass fails in its very purpose. It may look nice laying on its side like that, but why do snifters do that to begin with? The shape that the drinker can cup the glass in his palm and warm the brandy with his body heat. This shape is not conducive to cupping, and the stem-exchange system on the glass' bottom would likely make the thermal exchange that the snifter exists to expedite almost negligible.

I like this concept for one simple reason: ease of washing! We aren't specialized or expert wine drinkers in our household; we tend to use the same glasses for red and white, simply because we don't buy enough or drink enough of each to merit two different sets of glasses. However, something that's always getting to me is that every time we move or every few times I end up washing the glasses (by hand, natch), one of them always ends up breaking, usually at the stem. I've gone from a 12 wine glasses to four in six years, and having to buy more every time we have company is annoying. So, a wine glass with a plastic and metal screw base would be PERFECT!
Matt says
Champagne has a long skinny glass so the bubbles react properly and it stays bubbly, that glass is completely wrong for it lol

Funny how so many people obviously believe that, by pretending to understand anything at all about champagne and it's service, this will impress anyone else. What a bunch of dooflusses. To those of you that fall into this category, you will be better off keeping your mouths shut instead of presupposing things that you know nothing about. : )

With my limited understanding of the enjoyment of champagne, I may be wrong, but I believe traditional champagne flutes are tall and narrow because that shape allows for many more bubbles to form than in shallower, wider wine glasses, keeping the champagne from tasting flat. tl;dr? The champagne angle doesn't make much sense, especially since you can't sit it down.

and another good idea poorly thought through. different beverages are consumed in differently formed glasses for a reason (i won't explain that in detail), which ultimately defies this designconcept. the stand of the glass hardly makes the drink more enjoyable…

Cool, gimicky. The champagne glass looks good, but when the champagne finishes and you put the glass down…
Plastic base obscures quantity remaining, especially in the 'cognac' (or spirits) mode. Generally, people that enjoy their champagne, wine or shorts, prefer 100% glass/crystal. Plastic can look worn very quickly after a few washes and especially when handled by people with rings on their fingers.
But a nice idea.

Good ideia! although it would be better if the glass could keep the wine in room temperature for the red wines and cold for white and champagne ones. The glasses should have diferent shapes, because in red wines the vase must be large so the wine can breath and in the cold wines the glass must have a short entry so it keeps its freshness and bubbles =) Love the flute with no base, very elegant touch!
