Win A DNA Mini Portrait This Valentines (UPDATE)
Winner: John H. in Canada!
The moment of truth is here. Do you love her/him enough to give an everlasting gift, one that can never be etched away? I would even compare it to a tattoo because it’s so damn permanent.
Cards we throw, candies we eat, jewelry, books…the list is endless but ultimately they are just transcendent gifts of glory that slowly fade away. In this ever-changing world the only thing permanent is the very fiber of our being, our DNA. As a declaration of our sentiments it’s only appropriate to gift something as permanent as this to the ones we love. Would you want to gift this amazing DNA Mini Portrait to your Valentine?
Just leave us a comment on how this DNA Mini Portrait would make a difference to you and your Valentine. One lucky winner will win this $225 DNA Mini Portrait, and a get a chance to make a permanent difference in their lives. Ends Feb 14th. CONTEST CLOSED.

Because the person I’d give this to spends his days using DNA to get innocent people off of death row. Perfect.
David Bulfin says
I love my fiance. I love the very fiber of her being. What a neat opportunity to have picture of just that…
Tabitha Lee says
It’s an amazing idea. My fiance and I living in different towns at the moment and we both find it hard to be so far apart. If I win I would give it to my fiance as a promise that I will always be there for him and that someday our DNA will combine. We can’t wait!
Paul Glowiak says
I like the design, I like the idea, and it is something that never changes about you from birth to death. Of course, you need to make sure to give your Valentine some chocolate or flowers just in case!
Joseph Rosario says
@Fabio, that’s hilarious.
My brother and sister in law just had one of those “If they mated” pictures made, combining photos of the both of them. I think it’s always funny in the end, either looking exactly like the both of them, or being wayyyyy off. They had the latter.
Anyway, this looks like it’ll be a great gift. I’ve seen the ones that you can hang on the wall, but this one feels much more appropriate.
Le Pierr says
A DNA portrait of my darling would likely be just a black box with none of these nice colorful bars because the bi*ch is probably an alien and isn’t getting anything from me this year.
I’d like one for myself, though
David Azoulay says

It would be perfect giving it as a gift and saying ” Hey sweety, this is the equalizer of my heartbeat when i’m close to you”. It could seem like that!!
Faraz says
Amazing idea of a gift – what better way to say ‘I love you’ than to give a visual representation of your very being, the essence of your mortal self.
Not only that but true love is defined as accepting the other person, flaws and all. A DNA profile shows just that.
Would really love to win this prize !!!
fady says

mngnz says
Interesting, but how i can check, is it my DNA, or it is simply a beautiful picture?:)
Chris Hooper says
I’d use it to remind her of paternal testing.
No, seriously, it would be good because I can’t think of any other Valentines gift that has to be hand crafted by genetic scientists, even better for a gift.
Cloning is illegal at least for 2009. It would be cool if it could resurrect her from the dead.
Also it is significant that DNA is what makes a person. Not a finger print, or vein mapping. This is something that is unique that is actually integral to who you are. It’s even more fundamental than giving her your heart.
Your heart can be transplanted but not your DNA.
®DS says
This would make quite a difference to me and my girlfriend. I would finally get one for sure.

On Valentine’s day, if I win this contest, I will take my wife out to a nice restaurant for dinner, come home, present her with flowers and chocolates, turn on some Barry White and pour some champagne. I will then romantically ask her if she would like to exchange DNA in the bedroom. When she says, “absolutely, handsome” I will give her the DNA portrait and when she looks disappointed, I will say, “what did you think I meant?”
Rico Tijsen says
Can it make me coffee??
Tanner says
The bond between me and my future wife (10-17-09) to be is stronger than I could have ever imagined, we have been through a lot of changes in the years that have past, but too come back to this point in time of life and really need, appreciate, and love one another is a rarity in its self. I think if she was given this gift she would be able to every day look at it and think, “we may be different DNA but we share each others heart”.
Caitlin says
I would love to win this!
See… Valentine’s Day is very special to my girlfriend and I basically ruined hers last year by not being very active in the holiday. This year I’d like to do something special to show her that I do care. Also I am flat broke, and not crafty so I have no idea what I could do or give her.
Dimitar says
Quite cool, I want one of those to give away as a valentine gift

Linda says
Love this idea. Not only is it incredibly awesome that they customize it right down to your own DNA but it makes a great decoration. It has such a beautiful colour scheme as well. We are an incredibly nerdy couple and this would top it.
Jeremiah Britt says
I think the most powerful statements about the intrinsic value of a loved one are those that combine simplicity with creativity. This portrait is a fantastic combination of the sentimental and the scientific; something that tells you at a glance “you are the only one who can ever be you; you are the only you that will ever be”.
Boyan Yurukov says
My girlfriend is sometimes obsessed with DNA and heritage. She knows most of the genetic specifics of my people and their relations to other nations and historic events. I think this would really be an inspiration for her.
Tip says
Yanko Design is cool!!!!
shiro says
i want this for my girl
Belma says
this piece is like biological pornography – uncovers everything. so therefore it’s somewhat of extreme, essential nudity and most secret part of oneself to give as a gift to another person, a symbol of our own personal DNA
Armando Reyes says
its nice, but it is a simple square, i dont know, nothing impressive
Linda Boyd says
The idea of a gift of my DNA to my husband is such an amazing gift! Here’s my soul and my being – my everything – he can have it all. I love it!

André Bernardi says
Well, this is great. I`m sure that there are nothing so precious to give her than my own DNA. It would be amazing how could this just change our lives, once that our “meeting birthday” is on 17th Feb. And, far beyound that, this is the girl I’m going to get merry. So the DNA would represent for her not just a good idea for a gift from her designer boyfriend (me), but a simble of the creativity, the innovation and the sure to be the one of the first girls all over the country to win a DNA from her boyfriend.
Hope I win that =]

Geek-tastic and actually aesthetically pleasing too — an uncommon combination. Count me in on the contest. I don’t have a valentine this year, but maybe this conversation piece would land me one for next?

This would be so cute by my bed! I don’t have a valentine so I’d give it to myself as a reminder of the wonderful person I am <3 Not that I’m stuck up or anything… I just have a lot of love to give and no one to give it to, so I’m giving it to myself! (And to everyone visiting yankodesign! And my family, my friends and my pets of course) Happy Valentine’s everybody<3<3

What’s better than being able to figure out the many birth defects you both might pass on to your children?
Patrick says
do you know what its like, when you know ur lover can’t spend the night with you, and you sleep thinking of her, wake up thinking of her…
the constant longing.. well, maybe a picture is enough on the bed side table, but the DNA mini portrait portrays an emotion on its own.

Momo says
Excellent idea. It indicates something special that is often heard of, but never seen. This showcases it beautifully. I don’t think there is a better way of showing my everlasting love to my dear wife this Valentines. Keep up the good work guys!
Saurabh says
It would help me wake up every morning by showing something Cool !
CoralAmber says
This would be the perfect gift for my thoughtful, yet not overly romantic, geeky boyfriend. I usually get him video games, but this would be so much more thoughtful.
VoReason says
I saw this in WIRED magazine about a year ago. I loved it then and still love it now.
It would be so cool to wake up every morning and have a picture on my coffee table with a snippet of my DNA sequence on it.
It would also be an amazing conversation starter at house parties.

My beloved and I are both working for the fashion industry. She is still in Tokyo, but I had to move to London for my business. You might guess how fashion business is: trend business, only based on look and appearence. I work on fragrances, she works on fashion design. Our relationship is strong but however difficult to live because of the distance and also because of all the people we are meeting all the time. We have to keep strong and face all these hurdles, this is he reason why we are always in touch to fully know each other. Pictures, videos, chats are what we show of us, but acts are what we are. Because of the distance, I cant show her what I am.
What I see through this frame is not an ACT but a F-ACT (framed act) as eternal proof of who I am, who she met, and who I wil always be.

my boyfriend lives in southern germany, and on feb 14 we will have been in love for one year… i am hoping for a ring! a dna portrait would be a great way to say “yes!”
eric czar says
As an identical twin, I am certain that I need my very own DNA identity. I suppose that my genotype is the same, and perhaps it is only the phenotype that has changed…. so, perhaps to rouse a little debate, you could do two DNA portraits – One for myself and one for my brother – I imagine both of our girlfriends would love to see a “MEASURABLE” difference… and if there is no difference, perhaps we could just make a copy of the first one?
Happy Valentines Day!
May cupid find you where you least expect it!
blueteabag says
It would make her feel very special, and that would make me so happy you can’t even imagine how much.
We’ve faced trouble in the past but that hasn’t kept us apart, she’s always there for me and i think this would be the sweetest way to tell her i’ll always be there for her.
zippyflounder says
Its a cool idea, however (and a subject of a upcoming article) is that you loose all IP (intellectual property) rights when you post here. On something like this, do a patent search or even apply for a provisional patent application (110 dollars). If the designer had asked me (and I am available for consultation) I would have told them to do a ppa and then contact a company called 23andMe as well as a few others in the market space.
Keith says
I believe the time limit is 6 months that you have to submit the patent after you make the patentable idea public knowledge. Although, judging from what their website says, they have been mentioned alot in the media, so hopefully they have applied for the patent some time before now.
confucius says
As far as i know they have been in business for about 2 years so its assumed all IP has been completed.

Alex Leven says
Man, my girlfriend would love this so much. I’ve been spending a lot lately on the house so I can’t really afford to get her anything other than some roses, this would be a dream if I won it.
Luis Martins says
One of these in my living room will be good, because it will remember me that, me and my girlfriend have to join our DNA…
Just send me one…
Roman says
The girl whose heart I broke is the girl I love I am finding out more and more recently… Apart six months after being together for 2 years. You have her, a dancer who is grounded in nature, and me a designer who is grounded in the future and space. I want to get her back. I have been toiling on how to do it. Neither of us have a Valentine as far as I know. This would be an amazing way to do so.
She would love this because it is a natural human part of me presented in a creative way. It would also be my way of showing her, this is who I am even though I am 500 miles away.
TIZZ says
Better than a wedding ring. A DNA helix ! Shame I can’t slip it on my partners finger but I reckon it will look even better on the wall. Cool
melloncollie128 says
It would make our apartment so much more attached to us.
daehwan kim says

DNA … unique like love
Chukwuma says
The wonder of life’s essence and the chance to share it with a woman that you love is a great reason for this wonderfully designed concept. I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to come up with a line that wouldn’t make it awkward to give to the woman I love, but I am sure she would accept it openly, understanding the uniqueness of the person that gave it to her.
bb says
Wow, what a unique present. I would love this to give to my girlfriend.
*crosses fingers*
Keith says
This year, as much as the last, will be another Valentine searching. This comes from what everyone around me describes as being a very uncompromising person. In everything I search for the best, design and otherwise. I have come to realize that I am searching for someone with very specific differences that make them unique. You do not look for someone that fits a mold, but one who breaks them all. I think this portrait would remind me exactly how different every person is, and how elegant those differences can be. That one day I will be able to find someone whose differences I find just as elegant.
Mark says
This is quite unique. I’m not sure what I’d say to my girl when I give this to her, but I’m sure it will make the dinner conversation quite interesting…
Joelle Anique Dean says
If I had one of these to give my boyfriend, I think it would be as close as I could get for finding a way to tell him exactly how much he means to me and how much I love him. It could have similar meaning to a promise ring, since we are both broke-college students, and getting married in the next ten years it not a possibility because we both agreed to finish school first and then do the “family part”. I am going to be an elementary school teacher, and he is double-majoring in Psychology and Writing.
m3nd3l says

Radhika says
My better half and I have been dating 2.5 years now, and have been in a long distance relationship throughout. For those who have ever been in one, you know how tough it gets, and how it is so easy to forget the reason you got into it. This would be a perfect gift to remind him that this is forever, and although I am miles away, it’s only a matter of time till we are together. And we can make it through everything… this being a proof of every thing we’ve been through!
Rocco says
Having it on the table is like staying with my gf everytime….and every moment.

hahahaha, its funny how many people get involved when there’s something free for takes
There was an artist who also did paintings of the particular persons DNA it was commissioned for. Its a really cleaver idea, ideas like these bring the user closer to their product and almost make a human and machine relationship.
Products like this really draws back from mass-production image, and i think thats what people are looking for in products now.
confucius says
My girlfriend has supported me financially through the past few months, while I am up all hours of the night designing my products, to no financial gain (yet!)
I keep telling her that one day these designs will make me famous. She’s stuck it out, because she loves me, even though she thinks (and is probably right) that my head is too far up in the clouds, that Im a daydreamer.
But she doesn’t know what its like to have the design ‘bug’ thats in all designers, like an addiction, how we need to create to make this world a better place: our ‘daydreams’ are the future.
I would love to be able to afford this – to put a smile on her face, and show her I love her with all my heart, but I can’t, winning one is my only chance…
Jake says
Thats awesome! I want one haha.

I would like this gift for my fiance because, simply stated, he makes me unravel my inner double helix. DNA may reveal many of my traits, but it can’t speak to my experiences. If I could give him my DNA portrait, I’d give him the piece of me that he doesn’t know.
Rebecca says
How unique!

I love these! And, as much as it would be cool to give to a lover, I am wishing to give mine to my kids. It would make me feel good to know they will always have “a part of me”. And in an artful, modern way – which is very “me”.
I hope to win!

i am unemployed, really struggling to keep afloat…and I have just met the most wonderful, most gentle and poetic man from england. He is a set designer…very visual, very much into design – and spirit. He has touched my soul, he has brought a sliver of hope to my life.
If I could afford it, I would give him the moon.
But you could help me because if I win this prize, I could return some of the good design and visual candy he has given to me.

My girlfriends lives 8000km away from me. Pictures are mandatory for us, but this is even more, this is like having a great-looking fingerprint of the partner.
I definitely need it!

Dearest Yanko and DNA11,
While there is no way to accurately quantify the stellar connection between me and my man, surely a scientifically accurate picture of the true makeup of my earthly being will let him know how much I frickin love him.
Yours Sincerely,
Elizabeth

My wife and I met later in life and have been married for almost 4 years now; second marriages for each of us and each with 2 grown children. We’re into our 50s now, so having more children together really isn’t an option, but this gift would always serve as a reminder of what might have been possible under different circumstances. Without question, it would be a beautiful gift of art on its own, but the hidden message of the love it represents would only be fully understood by us alone.

We turn to pictures to remind us of people we shared the most precious moments of our life with. But pictures turn grey. Faces we knew so well change. Emotions fall prey to the life’s insobriety.
One has to look beyond the idea of the constant change, and instead find reassurance in what is always and essentially true – and that is in the Essence… of Me&You.

I Love my girlfriend. This DNA would be the perfect metaphor for our love; its poetic form beautifully embodies the concept of how I am going to shoot my DNA all over the back of her head this Valentine’s day.

My boyfriend and I share a passion for grate inventions and incredible designs. Daily discussions can be about the simplest designs or us analysing new inventions.
This DNA Mini Portrait would not just a symbol of the love we share for each other, but also the love we share for grate designs and amazing inventions.
My boyfriend is my first real love, and I had to fight quite a bit to be together with him.
If I could present my boyfriend with this amazing designed gift it would not just make this Valentines day perfect but also our anniversary.

My wife will never see this present coming. If I don’t win, I’ll be forced to fake my DNA and create a design of my own and tell her it’s my DNA.

I could give her a personalized gift that could only come from me. It would show how unique I am. Just like everyone else.

In opposite to the users who commented before me – I have no really smart comment on the Mini Portrait besides that besides its digital form it’s still what it is: a symbol. They say “Love carry more words than one could ever say in a life time.”. It has its ups and downs and so does life. It’s just like the Mini Portrait shows, love is not single colored. There are many shades of red and grey, sometimes dark. For example: I have a very special girl who lives 10,000 km away from me. When I first met her in 2002, 6 years ago, we fell in love with each other right away. I was planning to study abroad and told her to wait for the day I came back to marry her. When our families heard about our relationship they were strongly opposed it, because we were from different classes and had different social backgrounds. But besides all odds, besides all attempts by the parents to split us, she waited for me, 6 years. When I came back last year and learned about the hardships she went through to send me one love letter for every week for two years I was shocked. Shocked because I never received those letters who were probably stolen by her parents before she could send it, but more shocked, because I in all the years I never heard a word from her and thought she had forgotten me and had married somebody else. But she waited, 6 years. Sometimes love is like a game against all odds and still but I think it’s worth the risk. If one tries one might lose. But it’s better to say “I love you.” and fail than to stay silent and regret it for the rest of your life. She’s turning 25 this year in march. At first I didn’t plan to go back to my country after my study, but now that there’s somebody waiting for me, I have changed my mind. It would be cool to send her this as birthday present as a reminder that I will come back soon and marry her. But if I don’t win a couple of home-made chocolate will do. I wish you all a Happy Valentins Day!

He deserves this because…even when he’s being an ass we still make each other laugh. He deserves this because…his smile makes me smile. He deserves this because…he’s my voice of reason. He deserves this because…no man could match his ability to make my heart melt.
And really…what man wants a fluffy stuffed heart for V-day?
He could get a kick ass DNA portrait he will be able to keep forever.
That or I’m taking him to a game…and really…which will last longer?! xo

DNA Mini Portrait is a cool idea. Everybody can buy LCDs and add some photoshopped images. But your own DNA? This is unique, it’s part of you! How matter how similiar you might be, where you live or what you are, there is only one person in the world with YOUR DNA. And that’s shown in this picture! For others it might be just a picture but for you, it is a symbol of life itself! Thanks to that string of DNA we can live, fall in love, worry about debts and have fun watching baseball games! This is life!

So that is why I am hopelessly in love with my husband! One whiff of his DNA and I was a goner, explains so much.
What a great light for getting in the mood to mingle DNA.

I wouldn’t love anything more than to get one of these incredible art pieces that showcases science and art combined that represent something so permanent and artfully unique. My boyfriend and I actually own our own business which is called DNA Imagery! haha. . DNA is an acronym for our names Derren N Ana. This is definitely a once in a lifetime gift… which I would love to be able to give. I would love to win this for the both of us!
Everyone have a wonderful Valentines Day!
