Bring back the charm of 1970s poolside furniture to your yard with the Strap outdoor seating collection

Being stuck at home during the pandemic really did teach us a few lessons. One, being, that you can actually do a lot at home, especially in your backyard. It definitely made us realize we shouldn’t underestimate our backyards, they can be locations of major fun, recreation, and relaxation…depending on how we do them up. You can turn your backyard into an ideal date spot for you and your partner, or host a barbecue party! And an outdoor seating collection that would make an excellent addition to your yard, helping it come to life is the Strap outdoor seating collection by the Australian furniture brand Derlot.

Designer: Alexander Lotersztain for Derlot

Designed by Alexander Lotersztain for Derlot, the Strap outdoor seating collection is pretty cool, since it references 1970s poolside furniture. The Strap furniture collection includes 11 distinct seating elements such as armchairs, stools, benches, loungers, and stackable chairs. The chairs are made up of aluminum straps that seem to be tightly wound around simple tubular frames. The various furniture pieces are inspired by the designer’s childhood memories of the sun loungers placed around his local pool. “I had this same kind of pool furniture, with slatted plastic straps you could wiggle your toes through,” said Lotersztain.

“Our purpose wasn’t merely to produce a catalog of aesthetically pleasing images against a white backdrop in the comfort of a studio,” said Lotersztain. “Instead, we viewed this photo shoot as an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the reality of what’s happening in this country.” Hence, the collection was photographed in various local areas, including a backdrop of the outback. The Strap seating collection is designed to provide “a residential feel in public spaces”, and is intended to be used even in university campuses, shopping districts, and other urban spaces.

The furniture pieces are made from 70 percent recycled aluminum that can be recycled once they reach the end of their lifecycle. The collection is available in white and black powder-coated finishes as the standard options, but they can be customized in other colorways as well, to suit the space they are being placed into.
