Prosthesis of the Future

To ensure the most accurate and comfortable fit, the Active Leg prosthetic concept uses structural sheet metal with programmable deformation zones and an internal layer for pressure and temperature measurements. Sound a little complicated? Just wait… it also includes a neuro-circuit sensor that sends and receives info to and from the brain to control electro-active polymers (sort of like a faux-muscle). Pretty cool (even though we might have to wait until the year 2050!).

Hmmm… this will have to be pretty strong. It seems to me the “bone” will have to be more centered under the joint.

  • Jorge Rui says:

Yes you are right in a structural point of view regarding the present knowledge, I will remind that this is a concept for the sometime in 50 to 100 years from now.

I do realize that this defies current concepts of structural mechanics, and makes one question about the all thing… Part of the idea is: maybe someday the materials will be “smart” enough to adapt to any solicitation
