Even an Hourglass Goes High Tech

The Hourglass Lantern works like traditional hourglasses but turns the thousand year old tech upside down (literally) by using LEDs instead of sand. You can even adjust how long it takes for the light to flow from top to bottom by twisting the two halves like a dial. As time passes, luminance decreases on top as it increases on bottom.

I like the idea but there’s something more accurate about the sand based version since I can precisely see how much sand is left where as with the Hourglass Lantern, there’s no gauge when both top/bottom are lit.

Thought out well, subtile, useable in many applications and nice renders – especially the one of the hands 🙂

i agree with the sand-timers. but this is a novelty in its own. a good gimmick if you may 😀

Well, I really like it, congrats.

    Love it!

Would probably be better if it has more curves.

I LOVE IT!!!!! So hot, I like the way it looks. My only gripe would be that its just a slow dimmer system. It would be even more cool to ME if the light acted more like the way sand fills it slowly. So it gets darker on the top of the top part, and starts to fill the bottom of the bottom part with the bright light. Fun mechanical project to figure out…

P.s. Basicaly to eliminate the possible “Is the top fully dark yet?” There’s no beep so how would you know when it really is done? I think it should remain silent though, like a real hour glass.

There was a similar concept done 1 years ago in france. The theme is “sablier”. http://www.padi.or.kr/gallery-tea-1.htm

I think you lose the ‘precision’ of an hourglass, but overall…a pretty nice gadget!

    Where can I buy this?

  • TommySez says:

I was hoping it would be full of LEDs that would individually turn off from the top down. (With matching ones turning on in the bottom.)

Hmmm, this is a play on light, the intensity of the light = the sand, a little harder to conceptualize seeing as there is no clear delineation between time spent and time left, only degrees of luminosity. Or I am just talking out of my ass!
