Bento Box Kinda Like Voltron
Bento is quite an exceptional and forward thinking concept by René Woo-Ram Lee. It’s quite a plausible scenario that most of use/own a tablet, a PC, external hard drives and a smartphone. Now combine the power of these to have fully customizable Bento Laptop! The Box accommodates all the gear to work as one whole unit or individually; as you see fit.
Features
- Laptop with 15″ OLED screen
- 11″ tablet and 4″ phone sit in shallow depressions
- Solar powered lithium-ion battery
- 1TB SSD drive
Designer: René Woo-Ram Lee

The Fujitsu branding is evident and rightly so, the concept is a part of the Fujitsu Design Award that is organized by Designboom.

One interesting modification might be to have each set of tablet and phones have a personal identity. Then, you can use your own info in someone else's computer, in case you lose yours.

I really want this. Modern technology has hit a road block that people want a device that can do it all. Problem is no one wants a computer sized phone and when the tablet became popular, people wanted a device to everything AND what their tablet does. If the smallest block is also a phone this could revolutionize the way we use technology. I'll be waiting to see it in stores. (:

Thanks for your comment! I've personally had it with phones that try to be tablets and tablets that try to be laptops. Hope my design solves that.

I like the idea, but I am not so sure about the aspect ratio of the tablet's screen for the following reasons:
-a 21:9 screen would be incredibly long, and very akward to hold, exspecially in portrait. I mean when the xoom tablet came out (it has an aspect ratio of 16:10) most people (myself included) really liked the aspect ratio and felt its was better than the ipad's (4:3). A small few however did feel it was awkwardly long however, if some people (not many, but some none the less) felt that that was to long, imagine taking it and stretching it so it is about 1.5 times longer, once again this tablet would just feel way to akward to use.
quantum says
-Also, there is no content that supports 21:9, in 2010, a few T.V.s were produced in this ratio, however there is no broadcasted format or storage medium (DVD, Blue-ray, other) that currently holds content at that ratio, meaning playing any movies from today on a screen like that, there WOULD be letterboxing, because the screen is way to long. For example, i have the movie stealth (shown in one of the images above trying to demonstrate how the ratio of this screen is "perfect") in reality, it doesn't play in 21:9, it plays in 16:9, the standard for high definition movies. Trying to fit that movie on a screen like this would cut of signifigant amounts of the top and bottom of the movie.
quantum says
-16:9 or 16:10 ratios would be better. As mentioned above, most content (HD-TV, movies you get on DVDs or Netflix, HD video on the internet) all comes in 16:9 format. Both those aspect ratios are great for viewing webpages also, a 21:9 format would require a lot of scrolling up and down. 16:10 is extremely close to what is considered the golden rectangle, which for some reason, generally we humans consider it the most asthetically pleasing aspect ratio.
Rene Lee says
Thanks for your comment!
The 21:9 ratio really was driven by the fact that 9" tablets today are too narrow and too tall to make good keyboards. It also happens to be the aspect ratio in which movies are shot. Movies have to be edited down for home videos because no screen supports 21:9. But imagine if it did. As for letterboxing, side letterbox gives you room to put your thumb over the screen. Top and bottom letterboxes are actual waste of space.
In the end, I just wanted a wireless LCD keyboard that I can also use to watch movies. Making it wide enough for nice typing but making it 16:10 would make it at least 12" which is too big to carry everywhere or hold with your hands.
Jimmy C says
Well, you have to have it long to use it as a keyboard, and if you make it any taller, it's probably going to be bulky. But you did make a good point.

You'll always be able to get the best of old technology for a reasonable price because it's old. You could have gotten one hell of a horse carriage + horse for a money you could get the earliest cars that didn't work very well. But eventually technology gets faster, cheap and reliable to the point where everyone makes the switch. You just have to see it before everyone else does and bet your resources on the next paradigm

Problem with designs like this is that they are very clever and cool looking, but fail to take into account realistic, inherent negatives. Just to address the hardware, for instance: is the "cool factor" of an all-touch keyboard going to be enough to overcome the lack of physical keys and motion when typing? What kind of custom connectivity is the dock going to use to communicate between its parts – to say nothing of the custom connectors? (And don't just say "Bluetooth" – that's no panacea.) What good is a solar panel that small going to do for charging what will need to be a pretty beefy battery – not to mention that it will be covered up by the user's palm most of the time that the unit is in use? How WILL the charging be handled through those tiny contacts?
And let's not even get started on the software integration…
Most of all, what is going to convince the world that they need to shift to the connectors, etc. shown here? I suppose an Apple might do it, as they're used to going it alone, but I have trouble imagining more than one manufacturer ever supporting this as more than a one-off.
I suppose things that seemed as unlikely at the time have happened though…

My iPad 2 is thinner than my old MacBook Pro's Lid. Typing is not the only mode of interaction.
The point of these concept work is not to be constrained by the reality of today. That's not how you anticipate / drive the advances in technology.
Rene Lee says
Thanks for your comment!
- buttons are on their way out. people are typing emails on ipads.
- with NFC and UWB protocols will enable short range wireless data exchange. BT helps too.
- Solar panel is a range extender / not just for full charging. You can take the battery out and have it on your desk or hanging out of your backpack (in a case) with the laptop still in it.
- Apple's MagSafe contacts are roughly the same size
- Software will be the greatest challenge. I only see Palm(now HP) Apple or Google who can pull this off in terms of executing software. That's not to say other companies can't but I've yet to see good examples…

Would having the phone and tablet in place at the same time as the battery recharge the two, AND power the whole thing? Or would you need to charge those separately? (and if so, what happens if one stops working while you're busy?) Also how would the processors work together to make it worth using it as a laptop? It'd also be a nightmare to build a working OS and programs for this. (That could work in docked and/or undocked modes)
Otherwise, it's a very cool concept and design, and I bet it'd be ideal for frequent travelers — not having to carry a phone, tablet, AND laptop everywhere you went. Since I'm still in high school, it'd be nice to be able to use my own settings and files at school instead of shuttling between my personal computer and the ones at school with a flash drive (and if you don't get the same computer twice and accidentally save things onto the computer instead of the share drive, I can't tell you how hard it is to pick up where you left off)
Very cool design, I like how it's able to be used in multiple ways with multiple purposes
Rene Lee says
Thanks for your comment! The software will be the most challenging. But I saw an iPad output full 1080p video output and a steering wheel control for a game and was blown away. I think tablets will power laptops one day.
Ashley says

yankofan says
The concept is very appealing yet has a serious problem. You've mentioned as the tablet becoming a keyboard to "create contents". But you're missing the point why laptops or desk tops actually are suitable for creating contents. It's not because you have a standalone keyboard but it's because you have a "physical keyboard". A touchscreen keyboard is just can't be compared to a physical keyboard in terms of creating contents. A keyboard should give the right amount of tactile and auditory feedback or else you would always have to be looking at the keyboard to type or have to deal with so many mistyping.
Rene Lee says
Thanks for your comment!
I think content creating is more than just a keyboard. It's having a vertical screen wide enough. It's having a horizontal work surface. It's having enough processing power. It's the virtual keyboard not taking away half of your work surface. Otherwise, touch keyboards are just fine. There is also peripheral vision.
You and I have grown up with keyboards and mice, but there will be a whole generation who grew up with capacitive touch. We can't let tactility hinder our ability to imagine new things.
Jimmy C says
Your comment has nothing to do with creating content. It does not matter what kind of keyboard you have, and mistakes are all part of the process anyway.
technecat says
Do not forget, since it is a touch interface it can also be used with a stylus making it a great tool for designers to create content quickly and simply. As for typing with the touch keyboard, it's something that everyone is getting used to today and I don't doubt that the keyboard will go the way of the typewriter one day (still in use, but not very common). I'm sure that our future touch keyboards will give a tactile response of some type if it is judged by experts that it's necessary for use.

I'll give you an example. Today, if you need more storage/speed/battery life in your laptop, you go out and buy a new one. You buy a new screen, new keyboard, new case, new speakers, and everything that wasn't broken on your old laptop, because everything is built in.
If your laptop was modular, you can replace just what you need and keep everything else, hence more eco-friendly.

i think the idea is, that you wont have a laptop & a tablet & a phone.
You only have a tablet and a phone becasue the tablet has all the processing units etc… in so that will save some power. There will be less greenhouse gases/ energy used to make it because they wont have to make so many components too

What a great design! Personally I'd love to have one of these but, being a total space case, I feel like i might loose/misplace one aspect of the whole package (leave the battery on a table somewhere or forget the phone etc) leading to either a huge drop in productivity or complete lack of functionality. Any ideas how to work around this prospective problem? It might be interesting to have the dock "page" a missing element- make it beep or something… or maybe track the phone or tablet with gps from the dock.
Of course that's just me and, frankly, I'd buy this anyway in a heartbeat.
Also, very nice to see that you respond to all your comments and feedback so well, Its nice seeing a designer who can accept criticism (rather than babying their design and their ego) and respond to peoples concerns/questions with informative comments. you give me hope.

Sadly this doesn't resolve any of the "Bulk" that most tech users have to deal with. Its just re-arranging a set of iPad and iPhones. Technology that already exists. This isn't forward moving in any concept of the word.
What I would like is a rollable/foldable paper thin display. and an interface that can create embossed tactile interface for touch interfaces. That would be a real innovation.

It might be interesting to have the dock “page” a missing element- make it beep or something… or maybe track the phone or tablet with gps from the dock.

Jesse,
Thanks for your kind words. I did imagine a physical keyboard and a dumb trackpad that fit into the same cavity when you don't have your tablet/phone with you. But I decided not to show them fearing to have too many devices to present. If something like this would be produced, that issue would have to be addressed. Thanks for the feedback.

Sadly this doesn't resolve any of the “Bulk” that most tech users have to deal with. Its just re-arranging a set of iPad and iPhones. Technology that already exists. This isn't forward moving in any concept of the word.
What I would like is a rollable/foldable paper thin display. and an interface that can create embossed tactile interface for touch interfaces. That would be a real innovation.

This really is brilliant. I've said multiple times that the next evolution of netbooks would be like the badly-excuted Atrix, where there'd be a modular element where a phone/media player would act as both the external memory and the touchpad of the computer. But this is a much-inspired step forward.
You could add a physical keyboard attachment for ease of use, nostalgia, and personal preference. The trackpad doesn't have to be a phone or media player, it could be a touchscreen eReader a la "Kindle 5", and actually the same with the keyboard/tablet (although that's an awkward size for an eReader). Low power touchscreens could be used for either.
vogelcube says
However, it isn't perfect. There's no power outlet on the Bento Book shell, which I think was mostly oversight, and no place to stow that stylus, although if you make it small enough it'll go into the shell edge.
I'd love to see the Bento Laptop also be able to trancend laptop-ness. You already hinted at it with the use of the tablet as a wireless keyboard for other devices, but why not go all the way? Give the Bento Shell a way to stand/connect/have power on its own (AC, not battery), and suddenly you have a true desktop replacement, one you can literally recombine into a laptop and stow.
Another use of this style is to actually fold the screen of the laptop down and into a larger tablet, with the rest of the elements inside it for storage, charging, and docking/item use; you could use the traditional tablet-nettop rotating hinge, the Dell Thinkpad X201 hinge, or something clever you design yourself. Although, a rotating screen would also solve the desktop replacement issue above, as the screen could simply rotated, then prop itself up.
But still, brilliant design.

Very intriguing concept. I love the idea. Honestly, if I was a venture capitalist I would invest in this just to see a prototype. If anything, it's the best hub for your tablet and phone anyone has thought of yet because they don't just sit there hooked up to a chord while you use your main computer.
A few problems that come to mind:
1. If your phone or tablet breaks the whole thing is awkward or useless.
2. Mobile devices and computers run different operating systems so mobile ones can operate with low battery usage.
3.It will feel weird if one of the devices is not there.
4. If you get a call, you have to take apart your computer.
5. It's heavier than a usual computer because you have to have cases for each individual part instead of one single box housing all of the components and the tablet and phone will have speakers as well.
Questions:
1.Can you still use your trackpad while you are syncing your music with your computer? Because my ipod becomes totally useless when it is syncing. That's all the hard drive can do at once is sync so it is unlikely that it could still be a viable trackpad unless it somehow switched over to being just a display while connected to the case.
2. Will it be more expensive than the individual components are usually combined?
Recommendation:
1. Have tactile feedback, obviously, for the tablet keyboard to make it feel more like a real keyboard.
2. Use very lightweight materials and cut out unnecessary parts.
Rene Lee says
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.
Problems
1. That did come into mind. Although, it is after all, like carrying one device. If you only carry your laptop with you, if that breaks, then there's not much you can do as well. Better way to look at it would be that this is actually a single device that comes apart, rather than 3 different products becoming one product.
2. My ideal situation would be that the tablet runs a robust OS while phone runs light weight OS. iPad2 today can output full 1080p 3d graphics + XGA. I see tablets being able to power laptop experiences in the future. The phone would be more like a smart trackpad that also provides cellular connection when docked.
3. Again, seeing that people always carry their phones, and increasingly more tablets and laptops, I think the situation where you would be missing either pieces would be when you lost it, in which case you would replace it soon. I did think of just regular mechanical keyboard / trackpad options that would dock in place of touchscreen alternatives just in those situations, but didn't include them to be succinct with my vision.
4. It would then rely on, speakerphone, a bluetooth earpiece or a headphone with built-in mic. You don't have to take the computer apart and you get two hands free. If you're holding your phone, you probably can't do much work on a regular laptop anyway.
5. It is heavier than a regular computer, but you have two less devices to carry. It would still be lighter than a tablet and a phone combined with a fully featured laptop, as opposed to an empty bento box.
Questions
1. Simultaneous tracking / syncing can be achieved through multi-tasking, since tracking finger doesn't access internal files.
2. BentoPad is feasible today with existing technology under $1000. The phone will be not too different as well. However, the laptop case would be cheaper since there are no internal components. There is less redundancy when it comes to computing power, i.e. I'm not using the laptop processing power when I use my tablet. So I envision that it would be cheaper since we get rid of laptop internals and power the display through the tablet.
Recommendations
1. Yes. I also would love having proximity sensing to detect finger over a key.
2. Yes again.
Thanks again for bringing up points I didn't think of as much.

Do any of you understand how much 1 TB SSD would cost? 40 gigs is $100 right now…. youre talking about 25 times that much… so good idea, but a little unrealistic at this point.
Dennijr says
you can actually buy 1tb ssds currently, check ncix's website… they range between $3000 and $4500, depending on the type, and are currently 3.5IN drives unless its PCIE…. so thats one problem with this design
another problem with the design as mentioned before is the "Solar powered lithium-ion battery", so that little thing in the bottom corner is not only a solar panel, but a battery as well… the battery part would theoretically fit in that spot considering the iphones battery is probaby 1/3 the size of that space or smaller and the phone/tab already have their own batteries so this battery would only need to give an extra boost for the laptop itself. but to give enough power to all of the different parts, you would probably need a solar panel at least the size of the 15IN screen itself and aside from that, as mentioned before, the solar panel would be covered by your hand whenever the laptop was in use, and covered by the laptop lid whenever not in use.
keyboard feedback is of course another challenge, but keyless keyboards HAVE been invented and are used
using the phone as a touch panel mouse ive always thought was a neat idea ( i downloaded a bunch of programs for the iphone which let you do this over wifi, would be nice to be able to do it over the cable, or bluetooth )
finally, the last problem would be the laptop itself, it is so thin that there is no room whatsoever for any type of motherboard, fans, anything. this means there is not much room for an interface between all parts, and theres no possibility for a speed increase, most likely there would be a speed decrease because of the 2 devices (phone/tab) having to power 3 screens.
i really like this concept but i think it has some really big flaws, some suggested fixes from myself would be;
1)make the laptop thicker to put the solar panel covering the entire back of the 15IN screen
2)make the laptop thicker to make room for a motherboard below everything
3)make the battery be the only thing on the bottom left, would make for a decent sized battery considering theres not much to power

For the first time in a while I have before me on my computer screen a concept which does not look like curved white rubbish designed to solve or ignore genuine problems in the world, which does not show the designer as a pretentious spaggot who needs a proper job, which does not rip my confidence from the heart of design. It simply suggests something which, with a few minor tweaks, may be achieved in the near future and received gladly by the world. This is truly what conceptual design should be.

Could, theoretically, pose a serious challenge to Apple if it's managed right and priced feasibly. Don't know how they would price 2 computers and a phone reasonably, though. Also, what kind of phone is this? What carrier supports it? Does it run apps? Have an app store? Could I just pop an iPhone or Android in there? Great design is not going to be enough.

People are using type pads for emails but the speed and accuracy of an actual keypad leaves the touch screen type pad in the dust (at least now). You might want to consider some how making the device compatible with an actual keyboard. Additionally, people may answer emails on touch screen but for longer emails I’d say you were lying if you prefer your iPad keyboard to an actual one (for supporting evidence of this claim there is a serious market for keyboards that connect to the iPad).
Also, it may be helpful to create some personas (or whatever you want to call it). Just make up some people that you think would use this product. For instance, Philips creates a person with a name, a location, pictures, jobs, personality, and hobbies. This could help refine the product. Figure out when people would use this, I don’t know this but I think most people who have an iPad also have a phone and a laptop or desktop computer. If the idea is to replace the laptop or desktop you may have to do some serious editing.
I don’t know, just a suggestion. It is a great idea modularity is the way to go. Also, there is nothing wrong with developing all stages of the bento, phone included. I’m sure if the entire project is sound, some laptop company will buy it up.
Also, look up Microsoft 8, it fits well with your design choices http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92QfWOw88I

As an engineer and designer I must say that this concept is pure genius. Not only does it use the global hype of touch-screens like the iphone and the like but you combine them to act as a computer.
And the idea of switchable hard drives and batteries made me shiver. That is definitely the future. Being able to easily replace and upgrade parts of the computer is how it’s supposed to be done. Not apples crap about buying a whole new computer or paying hundreds of dollars to replace something.
Anton says
Boy, I just can’t stand comments like that. Now, I can’t argue Apple’s not expensive, but I have no hesitation coughin up a little extra for a superior product. I have never once, in almost two years using my MacBook pro 6+ hrs daily at school and home, felt the need for an additional battery.
Its a matter of “utility” or “flexibility” vs efficiency and reliability. What’s your choice?

This is like windows 8 on steroids. And that is NOT a good thing. I can pretty much guarantee, that if this succeeds it will be only because half the world are stupid and can’t figure out how to work a computer. That keyboard is not ergonomic, the touchscreen gaming concept is a nightmare, and the fact that the thing runs off of the things that it has plugged into it, means multiple bad things, 1) One would have to have at least one, if not more products that fit it exactly, 2) if one loses that product, they are screwed 3) what if your in an emergency situation, and you need your cellphone to call for help, so you pull it out, and oh noes, it’s dead from powering your youtubing. The thinness of the book itself is also a liability, as it would be easily damaged, which is the fatal flaw of macbook airs and the like. The world seems to think that making laptops thin as possible is better, but they keep doing that, and it will just get easier and easier to damage. The touchscreen keyboard is another thing, that is just useless, like iPad’s which I personally find horrible to use, because I can’t feel my way around the keyboard, I have to actually look at it, meaning that I cannot look at say, a book or anything else that I may wish to look at while typing. The keyboard even has little nubs on the j and f key. They’re virtual. What is apple trying to do there? Touchscreen keyboards, are stupid, and everyone seems to get behind the whole touchscreen concept, and it’s bullshit, for multiple reasons. I hate having to clean the screen on my phone, (NOT an iPhone) which is made worse by the fact that I have to touch it half the time to just operate it. Don’t get me wrong, it IS nice, but honestly, a d-slider and a and b button like a 3DS would be better than that. overall, this is a majorly flawed concept, in multiple ways, the most blaring ones being power issues/detachment, and the fact that if one drops it, (face it everyone does that at some point or another) it will be damaged, much worse than say a durable think-pad. I’m sorry if I come off as an asshole here, but honestly, people who think this is the best thing ever need to open their eyes.
Dakota Willingham says
One more thing, if anyone thinks that this piece of metal will worry Microsoft and Apple, it won’t happen. Sure, people will switch, but most people will realize that it’s a bullshit idea that has multiple flaws.
Dakota Willingham says
Thank you.

So, are you doing anything to make this a reality or is it just something you dreamed of and put together with photoshop?

It’s also very difficult if not impossible to link multiple devices cpu’s together without major bugs

This is ingenious! Too bad Apple already has something titled bento but this should totally be done. if only it wouldn’t cost $2500+ coming from them, and if only it would be good coming from Microsoft…

I am in love. I would love to pay for one right now! I would throw my wallet, full of money at you and make it rain if I had to. When will these be available to the public?
Raintail says
The only thing I see that might not work well is how a tablet processor is going to effectively run that many things, 3 displays, with all this touch interface the hardware in that tablets going to have to be very intense. it’s a flawless idea in concept though, I applaud it.
Drake says
Wow, this is awesome, only thing I don’t like is operating system and tablet screen ratio. They should merge with Apple.
Josh says
Hi,
Interesting concept.
You should have a gel keyboard, or better more a a mixture of gel and plastic. Clear if possible.
I like the physical keyboard.
Foxy says
I want it.
NOW!!
Brian Hickey says
Absolutely, this concept is amazing. I can definitely see this as a future trend. As far as Apple goes, the simplistic and minimalistic features of the product are a near underline of Apples’ products and they way they design them. Invest in this people!! This is the future!

i thought of this concept before, the nintendo ds like design with a tablet as the keyboard for a laptop. Never thought of a smart phone being the trackpad though. pretty brilliant design. its only a matter of time before every laptop produced has a touchscreen keyboard. it makes sense eliminating the mechanical malfunctioning of the keys on a keyboard. plus it opens up all sorts of possibilities for what the keyboard may be used for.
Dracomenda says
i am currently using a laser projection keyboard for the coding on my site and have no problems with it…. this would just make my creating and coding ability so much easier as i would have a triple interface that i can use for graphic design, 3D modeling, protype development, 3D coding, ETC…. so for any generation that grows up on a virtual keyboard would have to agree (sad isn’t it)
Swapnil says
wow i want one of these

I somewhat like the idea, it certainly something that interests me more then a laptop. however, the touch pad keyboard is something that a lot of people, myself included, dislike. it feels much more comfortable to have a physical key board in which you can feel the keys be pressed and have some resistance. Another thing that kinda feels weak in the design is the dock. If the only purpose of the dock is to link the devices together and provide a bigger screen then that kind of discourages those who don’t want “convenience” from buying it. That’s one of major things that keeps me from liking laptops and if the dock serves no purpose beyond the mentioned then I would be reluctant to buy it. A solution would be to add components to the dock that improve the devices, things like increased RAM, better cards, faster processing, etc.
Avarice says
Absolutely amazing!

and they said nothing could ever beat the ipad… i have one, and i would absolutely sell it right now for one of these if it’s functionality is as appealing as the design.

if this does get made make sure that it has a good enough processor and graphics card for gaming if it did i would buy it in a heart beat. the little dock/laptop should have its own computing power that is powered by the solar panel.that way you can use the laptop for awesome games like diablo3 and minecraft

The only issue I can see is that there are plenty of people that just don’t like touch keyboards. If you could get a “filler” tablet that had a tactile keyboard and put it in place of the touch tablet, that would open up the laptop functionality to those who require tactile feedback. Not to say, of course, that touch keyboards are bad, just not everyone’s preference. Great idea overall!
GBGamer117 says
Another option for a later date would be that Tactile display that morphs from touchscreen to having buttons. I’m not sure what it was called, but it was on an android news site. I’m sorry I can’t find the story, but I am on a limited data plan.

It’s like the skeleton of a Macbook Air decided to get some organ transplants, seriously. No processors of it’s own, how is it possibly going to run anything? It would barely be able to use a screen, if it has no processor of it’s own.
Xyro says
There is no way in hell a solar panel that tiny could power a computer. Do you know how much energy is wasted in solar energy usage? Somewhere around 99% of it goes to heat.
Xyro says
@Paul I don’t really see how anything you said in that first sentence had to do with what Nekodaisuki said, but also, typing is essential in any computer, there is no way you could go without it. *Especially* anyone who doesn’t use the GUI factor as much, like programmer’s that work with the command line
Xyro says
Solar power is extremely inefficient. Like seriously, it won’t work. Ever. Appx. 99% of the energy fromt he sun is converted into heat, rather then usable energy
Xyro says
Bento is Lunch in japanese.

Or, instead of “superior support” where they just charge you 200 bucks to take it apart and do something anyone could do, if Mac’s were easily disassembled, you could just use windows. The only good thing about Mac is the application of artistic programs
Dakota Willingham says
Yes, I’m so sad that I didn’t come up with something that sucks this badly. Whoops, sorry, meant glad there.
Chas H says
I really like the design and I love the concept. But this looks like the “pad” and the “book” are tied together. If something came out to support devices people already have, Ipad, Iphone, Android, etc then it may be a better idea. Also I don’t like touch keybads. But I love the look and the idea behind it all… I think there is a future for devices like this.
Daniel says
This looks like an incredible concept. I Think that this is definately where the industry needs to go even if it isn’t completely plausible quite yet.
saty9 says
how much would it cost theoretically?
BreizhM says
I’m rather okay with my laptop and my phone not being part of the same device… What if I broke/lost one of the pieces? What if the phone/mouse piece got stolen? Would I have to replace just that one piece, or would I have to buy a whole new system?
Which piece stores the memory; the laptop, the tablet, or the phone? Or is the 1 TB of memory spread out over all three devices?
Also, maybe I’m sentimental or plain weird, but I just really like typing on an actual keyboard. I like the sound and the feel of it… I’m not a big fa of touchscreens.
Plus, whatever this device hits the market (assuming it hasn’t already), it’s going to probably cost thousands.

It would also be cool if the main monitor is detachable like the recent tablet to laptop convertibles nowadays. This also means per component would have its own internal memory right. Really cool device here! You should release it to the market!!

A few years ago i told my classmates that this would be the direction mobile technologies would travel. that a laptop is no longer capable of meeting all or your needs, and that a tablet doesnt hve enough capability. i told people that their phone would become a relevant part of their computers and that all three would interface seamlessly.. some people loved the idea.. some people thought me too far fetched. so all im going to do now is share this page to everyone in my class.. and say see.. thats what i meant. right there. this brings credence to everything ive said for a few years, and hell, im not even through college yet. looks like im on the right track though
Kyle says
haha yeah, and if they implement the APIs properly, you could use the cam on the base, alongside something like skype, which lives on the tablet, and have the phone do all of the capture API, which would allow a mic to pick up your voice. so, a skype call in 3 parts, whcih could seamlessly be transferred to either smaller device… talking to your significant other?, grab the phone and walk away if you need to.. conference call with the firm? grab the tablet to see everyone at once. flawless.
Kyle says
true, it would be ridiculously expensive. but the bonus of the modular design, is that they could produce a laptop keyboard tho sit where the tablet goes. they should think about selling all three together, with different packages, one that comes with a keyboard rather than a tablet, one that has a tablet, but does not come with a phone, things like that. not everyone has the same situation or requirements for a device.. right>?

Honestly, I don’t think this is good ergonomic design at all. It’s complicated, the various screens are over specialized and would the OS would be a nightmate.

OS is the fun part.

I think that your designing skills are really nice, and a device such as this could definitely be a very practical all-in-one IT Swiss army knife. However, I have one problem with these “concept devices” that we see everywhere on the web. It is that you can make a concept device to look so much more awesome than what is possible to actually produce today.
Are you certain that this is 100% produceable with current tech? Also, wouldn’t the battery life suffer from such thin dimensions? I am specifically thinking about driving the large OLED screen, unless you plan to hook it in to the mains. All and all, battery tech news keep promising revolutionary new cells of wonder, but have so far delivered very little “in vivo” examples of new high energy density batteries. Most “Concept devices” fail right there. We have the tech to make super thin, ultra portable devices today with new low effect loss CPU/GPUs, OLED and new light high strength materials (*gasp for air)… but current battery tech make these devices bulky .
