Making Your Own Clock
The Meaning of Time is a brilliant clock concept perfect for all those crafty people out there. It supplies the mechanism to keep time, you supply the hour and minute hands. You can use just about anything as long as it fits thru the holes. I myself am partial to a barrel of monkeys. Perhaps a picture string of ex-lovers or even more sinister ants trapped inside a glass tube.

Please build it !! I want to have one !
Curves says
Its a novel idea, customizing the hands, artsy in a practical way (I love clocks).
flyboy says
pencils and stuff would fall out the holes as they are too short for the weight. Plus – how do you get the right width. Good idea without thinking it through – the holes need to be ‘engineered’ (ie. made to work) to fulfill the design.

flyboy: one word: glue.

Or even sticky-tack for a temporary solution…

Awesome concept!
I agree with flyboy, the holes could be improved, but I still love it

I like the simplicity of the design too as it is neutral to the end design of the clock. Add me to the list of eager potential buyers of this object.
Lim says
Yah can be improved… In terms of making it into real product, exploration such as what is the energy used to moves the holes around, as the designer says FIT in anything…..
Sometimes, after looking into the mechanical factor, not only idea and design, it may affect the form again… and again….
Divs says
With engineered holes, this will be beautiful! Think about changing the look of your clock as and when you get tired of what you see on your wall…
I want!

hum….how to say this without being sus…

great idea one question tho,?
How does it compensate for items that are different in weight/length? i long twig or pencil will generate a different resistance to that of a silver spoon or weighter item. minute/hour hands are usually very light items so as not to interfere with the accuracy of the time keeping.
where is the powersource. Nice in theory tho, but show me the reality..!
Richard Bronosky says
This is a great design, and would probably have already been done if not for the following:
1. The weight of the hands will require excessively strong servos.
2. The off center weight will cause the whole clock to want to rotate/droop on the wall.
3. The bulk of the unit is buried in the wall. Since an AAA/LR03 is 10.5mm in diameter and an AA/LR06 is 14.5mm in diameter… That is a pretty big hole to put in your wall.
4. The duty cycle of a battery that can drive the servos is probably also going to be an issue.
As a mockup or movie prop it looks great. I don’t know if it is a marketable idea.

Hahaha ! This is the ultimate design …

I would like one of these myself.

it can be a real product
good idea
prodmod says
The holes can actually be rubber grommets (flexible sleeve) so you can press any rod-like shape into the hole (up to a certain weight limit).
Or you can have spring clamps in the holes that clamp onto the object using spring force.
Or something similar to how sockets snap into a socket wrench.
You can also use just use a set screw and allen key. That will easily work with any wood, or pencil etc.
You might have some issue with heavy items like someone mentioned. But you either just use lightweight items, or you find a way to make the gearing in the clock strong enough to move heavier items. There is more than one way to build a clock mechanism.

at a first glance, the product itself does not look right…
but it is a great innovation… you get to use anything you can insert in the hole to make a clock… including lollies! (=^.^=)
