Bamboo-based biodegradable plastic cutlery that you won’t want to dispose!

Bio-materials are perhaps the biggest design trend this year, even making it as the theme of the 2019 London Design Fair Material of the Year. They’re a quick and effective way to create a positive impact without shifting the consumer culture… and quick and effective are the two words we definitely need, given the situation of our environment. KNORK Eco’s are designed to be cutlery you can dispose after use, but you won’t want to. Created from Astrik, a biopolymer made from sugarcane starch and bamboo pulp, KNORK Eco feel like plastic, but come with a much thicker cross section, making them solid and incredibly durable. They can be used, reused, and are dishwasher-friendly… and in the event that they do end up in a landfill, the KNORK Eco will biodegrade into compost in just two years.

What sets the KNORK Eco apart are the fact that they aren’t designed like your single-use plastic spoons and forks. Marginally thicker cross-sections mean they’re as robust as stainless steel cutlery, while the ergonomic gripping handles are perfect for eating food with. The bio-polymer is heat-resistant, making it perfect for all sorts of meals, and its glossy finish makes it look top of the line.

Developed using sugarcane and bamboo, two of the fastest growing plants in the world, the KNORK Eco can practically be produced on a scale that matches most plastic production. In fact, the KNORK Eco can even be biodegraded to fertilize the very soil that is used to grow these plants, making it one of the most inventive and positive cradle-to-grave approaches I’ve seen… but given exactly how great they look and feel, I definitely wouldn’t want to dispose of them too soon! In fact, the Astrik-case they come in make them perfect to carry around and use anywhere you go!

Biodegradable Unbleached Kraft Packaging

The team has elected to go with the lowest impact packaging possible. The product is packaged in unbleached craft paper to reduce its impact on the environment. Packaging is also minimal to reduce quantities used.

This Plant-Based Fork + Spoon Set uses natural materials that will biodegrade after you’re done using them. Made from up-cycled bamboo fibers from factory scraps plus a plant-based ‘plastic’ alternative from sugar cane starch (aka PLA), this utensil set is biodegradable by design and can be commercially composted (where they will compost in about 2 years!).
