Wrap-around BB

Very rarely do designers venture into the BlackBerry turf. I think the perception of it being a serious business phone deters concept enthusiasts. For the moment we have this refreshing concept, which capitalizes on the new screen technology that is flexible, lightweight and transparent. Iterated as candy bar and a slider, the phones feature a “smart” wrap around screen and knows the difference between an intentional command and a hand holding the phone!

Direct Power

The Autonome is a mobile phone concept with a unique charging feature. The regular way to do this will be to directly plug-in the phone to the wall socket, negating the use of any cables. Alternatively, you can detach the specialized module, tank it up and then hook it back to the phone and transfer the juice. This ways you get the freedom to use the phone whilst charging the extra ammo. I love the magnesium unibody frame designed for this, and of course the practical solution for charging. Ideal for travelers too!

Connected to the iPhone, the device can capture ultrasound images of an unborn baby and allows rapid sharing with doctors, family members and friends within seconds over wifi or its built in printer. On top of all that, the device also doubles as a baby monitor after the little one comes home!

Connections are Everything

The conceptual Opportune smartphone app tracks a user’s interests based on keywords from their Facebook updates, web searches, and frequented sites and gives them real-time geolocated “connections” that might be able to help them with something they’ve been searching for. For example, someone in the market for a house could walk in to a coffee shop and see that a real estate agent is at the same coffee shop. With a simple click of a button the two can link up and talk business within minutes!

Yes these tiny, near invisible objects can revolutionize the bio medical, optical and electronic fields so designer Ilshat Garipov put pen to paper and came up with the Smartphone Booklet –  a disposable phone as thin as a cardboard made possible by switching from traditional silicon to nanoparticles.

The Floating Phone gives us an idea of how 3 D cellphones will look and feel like. The fantasy is about the experience and how we can a flat touchscreen intuitively rises to your finger touch and makes dialing or texting a whole new adventure. The added functionality of doubling up as a Braille phone just goes to so the versatile applications we can have to this kinda phone. Imagine what a PSP Phone like this will be….thrills unlimited!

Tablet Phone or Phone Tablet – You Decide

Mobikoma is a concept phone based on modules that fasten on to each other via micro locks. Each module has its own power supply and computing processor making it a powerful individual. However the purpose is to use them collectively as a phone and if you’re in the mood for it, a mini tablet. There are two specific elements dedicated to the SIM storage with phone memory and microphone. These elements are distinguished with their fancy etchings on the back.

Infatuated by a Phone

You have to agree that our mobile phones have become an emotional extension of who we are. Right from the screensaver to the mood message to apps (like Siri), details like these give several insights to a person’s individuality. Concepts like the Empathy and now the Heartbeat Mobile Phone, all go to show how the future foresees us building an intimate relationship with our device. Healthy or not, this kinda intuitive interactive-ness is here to stay!

Always Socially Connected

The LG Finestra is a display-charging cradle-Smartphone concept. What we have here is a display with a charging cradle and the ability to sync with the Smartphone so that you can access your social sites at whim. The advantage is that you can manipulate the display to showcase pictures as a window display and enjoy different sceneries. The phone beams out a virtual keyboard for easy navigation.

My BFF Phone

Here’s the ugly truth about hip new phones coming out every few months, they cause lust and shallow values. That’s right; every time the new iPhone is out, I want the new shimmy. I go ahead and replace my old trusty without a thought or passion! Hey wait a minute, isn’t this our life story too? Anyways, the point is, the least we can do is forge a deep emotional relationship with our gadgets, deep enough to hang on to them for quite some time and just for the sake of posterity keep upping their modular innards to keep them up to date! Something like this Modai Phone.

Smartphone is Super Flexi!

When it comes to concept design and exploring the possibilities of user experiences, we have seen some radical thinking come across like a lightning bolt. Fine examples are the Bento Box Laptop and the Napkin PC. This time around we are looking at a smartphone that serenades as a lampshade (charging cradle) when not in use. The design explores the usage of flexible LED screen to the hilt. Moreover the screen is a tad bit exaggerated to mimic a curvy tablet. So are we heading to an era of overstated phones that are understated tablets? Looks like we are!

The Total User Experience

Designer Victor Johannson’s mobile phone concept focuses on ease of use by providing multiple input controls that the user can customize to their liking. Features like dual sided scrolling and volume control as well as side a back-side keyboard, clock, or place to dock apps are definitely bonuses. The coolest feature by far, however, is piezoelectric feedback technology that gives tactile signals in four different directions that makes it possible for the user to ‘feel’ the direction to travel.
