Fruity Water Gate
This project is completely apolitical. It IS literally a gate of water. This project goes by the name of “Water Shade” and keeps a shield of H2O around the fruit it is sworn to protect. It’s both a dish and a cover, working with water to keep freshness in and everything larger than Oxygen OUT! Designer Yitu Wang doesn’t want to keep you from your delicious apples though, so there’s a built in detector that sees your hand in approach, and thus is does desist.
Moisture is locked in. Freshness is locked in. Flies are locked out. Dust is locked out. And when you come up and decide you’d love to have a strawberry, as soon as your hand gets near, the streams in that area stop. You’ll remain dry. How very keen!
Designer: Yitu Wang

Disagreement is one thing, offensive profanity another. Have you no idea of how to convey a point in a civilised way? I also happen to think you are wrong, moving water evaporates at a faster rate due to increased surface area through turbulence and disrupted surface tension. Learn some physics, and while you're about it, some manners too.

Danany says
Are we talking about a long period of time, or a short period of time? Hoses – Usually used to fill something up. Approx 5 – 10 minutes. Large quantities of water doesn't evaporate that fast. Now for this. You are probably going to be letting it sit. All day, and all night. Usually for days.. Obviously a lot more time to evaporate

If we only designed things we know would work then all design would have been done and dusted a LONG time ago. I'm sure you work on "actual" products but I dread to think how empty that process is if you don't take time for flights of fancy.
If you don't like concepts, probably best not to look at Yanko. I think Yanko can only benefit from that arrangement and the rest of us can carry on enjoying people's work whilst providing constructive feedback.
Maybe one of these ideas will spark something brilliant, until then I'm happy for the break in designing real products to see what the next generation are readying for us.

I hate all the concepts people come up with. Don’t just come up with the idea and make a 3D model of it, make a crude prototype, it’s more interesting and way more effective in catching people’s attention.
Wowsers says
Everything starts here, with a concept. Sometimes you need backing to get to the next step. There is no reason that designers can’t put their ideas out there for other to see and possibly for investors to consider backing so that prototypes and whatsits can be made. Beside not all designers are inventors and visa versa.
Igor says
An industrial designer *has* to be an inventor. Whether that means making up patents, or using things and materials in ways nobody thought of using them before is irrelevant, but if a designer doesn’t invent, he/she is useless or just a an artist with a knack for 3D modeling.
Furthermore, design should be used to make our lives better, to enrich us, and to do that with minimum material and energy efforts. Exchanging plastic bowl cover for a collection of lights, motors, pumps, sensors, is not clever design, it’s just a waste of production time and energy.
I’m not saying things like this shouldn’t be thought of, they should, lateral thinking is the only way to get variety in design today, but it should stay within the walls of the university it was thought of, or encouraged to be ‘designed’. This site should, by now recognize things that are good design, and this fails to be so under every category.
Lacey says
Thank you, someone that isn’t so judgemental. Geez.
To come up with a 3D concept? What’s the harm in that? You don’t HAVE to be an inventor, unless you want to be a complete pro.
Either way, I’m not so sure how this would work out…putting fruit in a bowl of water could probably work too, but people need to stop being such assholes about it.
milK says
Besides you seeing this concept wrong (it isn’t the same as putting it in a bowl of water, it protects the product by making a shield of water, the water itself probably hardly touches the product). An industrial designer does need to be an inventer if he tries to market it’s product from a freelance basis at least, wich is basically what this guy is doing.

I’m anxious to see it realized. The point about evaporation is true but for a short period, say a lunch, I’m sure it’s large enough to hold enough water.
People, concepts have to start somewhere… more often than not paper (or computer) before they become an actual physical item.
It may never be realized but is a great idea and great ideas can lead to other great ideas.
Nice!
Chris Canfield says
I’m worried about the practicalities of a design like this. Can we really control the flow of water to that precise of a degree? As far as I know, the answer is “no,” which means that a working prototype would be needed as a real proof-of-concept.
It is a neat idea, though. I wonder if air might work better than water. Currently, airshields are used to gate doorways and other entry areas from bugs and dust. They don’t need a precise pick-up, they don’t contribute to mold growth, and they can get all over fruit without issue. You wouldn’t even need to stop the flow for probing hands.
The ripple pattern in the top image has me very concerned about whether or not the designer understands the practical limitations of the medium. That’s not even close to what would happen if you touched a cascading laminar flow.
FizzleMuffins says
I’ve actually seen a lot of fountains with similar dome-shaped water sprays. That’s probably where the inventor got the inspiration. Also, I’m sure the ripple pattern is just to show that the water is there in the model.
FizzleMuffins says
Apologies, I was looking at the wrong picture.. The ripple pattern you were really talking about isn’t the water, that’s to show the sensor picking up on the hand,
KhrsKing says
While an air shield may be more practical, it is possible that the water would add an artistic side to it. With the water, this would bemuch nicer to look upon.

quantum says
I like the design, but there are a few problems:
-because the water is acting as the sheild, it would pick up all of the dust, dirt and bacteria in the air and soon become dirty, and if were to touch the food would soil the clean fruit
- The food is surrounded by water, meaning it would be moist which would cause the food to spoil faster
-The design emphasises that it would keep other things out while letting oxygen in, which is the opposite of what you want because a good source of oxygen would speed decomposition
-On warm days water would evaporate quickly and one would constantly have to refill it, which is a waste of clean water. Clean water is something we shouldn’t waste considering many parts of the world lack large amounts of it and it is a chalange to find it.
-You wouldn’t want to move it around to much because you would risk spilling the water
Ultimatly with all of the problems with moisture and oxygen leading to shorter life of the food and the waste of a precious resource, it would be easier, cheaper, and more benificial to simply place the fruit in a refrigerator.
Alex says
the water could be circulated through a filter cleaning out any dust
it's a shade of water which wouldnt make the fruit any more moist than the humidity in the air
there will be no better source of oxygen with the product than without the product so another point voided
evaporation would not be that big of an issue, i dont worry about my glass of water evaporating when it sits on my nightstand all night
again, i dont refrain from moving a glass of water out of fear of spilling it
so which of these points are valid? new ideas should be applauded not denounced as they are the gateway to all new inventions. this product seems pretty slick to me
quantum says
A, i wouldn't want to pay to constantly buy new filters, so that point is still valid
the shade of water would evaporate forming aditional vator vapor inside leading to additional humidity, leading to increased decomposition, another point still valid
and a water dish for my cat is constantly lossing water from evaporation (no its isnt from them drinking because even when they are out side it is still loosing water at a crazy rate) yet another point still valid
ohh and the oxygen thing, its called a plastic bag, it would prevent more oxygen from getting to it. valid again
so how many points are still valid after all? looks like all of them
Alec says
cool story bro
Aoh says
If your cat's water dish is evaporating “at a crazy rate” there is something a little more wrong there…… By the time enough water evaporates so that you would need to replace some of it, your fruit will be starting to go bad anyways. Water doesn't evaporate that fast.
quantum says
I like the design but there are a number of problems:
- As the water flows around the system it would become dirty, why would you protect the fruit with dirty water? Adding filters just increase complexity and the price as the user would have to replace them and buy new ones, constantly adding more clean water is a waste considering clean water is something that people in many parts of the world are lacking.
-Surrounding the fruit by water creates a moist environment inside which would speed the decomposition of the food by leading to things such as mold
-the design emphasizes how it allows oxygen the easily enter which is the last thing you would want, as it too would speed decomposition especially when mixed with the moist environment.
-water would constantly be evaporating out of it meaning you would constantly have to add more. Clean water is a very valuble resource that shouldn’t be wasted, there are parts of the world where clean water required to survive is extremely hard to find.
quantum says
Woops, sorry for posting that twice, when i tried the first time my computer said it didn’t post so i postet it again but i guess my computer was wrong!
alex says
oh and maybe we should cover all of our fresh water lakes with an impermeable layer to prevent all of that valuable water from getting away via evaporation…
quantum says
this design wastes water for no point besides speeding decomposition
fairway says
how long would you have the fruit in it? most lasts for days just sitting out on the counter. This device looks like a party favor, not intended for long term storage. I mean I buy my fruit to eat it, you would have to be an idiot to just let it "decompose" regardless of where you put it.

I know, its just some thing thats pointless beyond use as a party favor, something that is useless to actually store food in.

I really don’t know why would anyone want to use something that requires a battery when a glass lid would do an equally good job?
Make it airtight and there goes.
I don’t think oxygen passes through water the way it is described in the concept.
Like someone already pointed out. This will work only on a flat surface a little tilt and the water would spill out.
Also if you want to move it around the table or shift it you will have to shut it off.

What does this do, exactly?
Is there any science demonstrating that water falling has the ability to keep food fresh?
On the engineering side of things, those are some pretty tight tolerances that you need to figure out, to shoot a stream of water that's so fine and will continously land in the tiny slot.
A glass lid – can keep an (almost completely) airtight seal, doesn't require batteries, will never spill on you/ your food/ the counter, doesn't have an electric motor that will burn out, or a motion sensor, and, as a result of all these things (plus hundreds of years of manufacturing history) is much less expensive. Oh, and you can recycle glass.
Congratulations, you've designed an expensive widget that is destined for the landfill after a few days of frustrating its owner and spilling water all over his counter.
I know it's a concept… but it's not one worth pursuing. There are more pressing issues that design should be addressing.

Water is one of those tricky things that you can't just scale up and down- you might not be able to make a small thin dome of water like this and if you managed to the disturbance from creating sudden edges in it might be enough to offset the balance so much you'd have to stop all of the flow before starting the dome again.

I bow to you for inventing a new Internet meme. “I doubt it will work as on a warm day the water will evaporate”. Right up there with “first!” and “‘shopped! I can tell from the pixels”.

I don't really know anything about this other what it describes in the diagrams. After reading a few of the comments though I see a lot of people claiming that this thing is a waste and is pretty much stupid. WELL IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO REPLACE A GLASS LID!! It's just something different, unique, unusual, interesting, cool, and something that none of your friends will have so THAT'S why you would get one! People need to lighten up and appreciate art.
Debussine says
It's aesthetically pleasing, but -not- art. There is a difference.
Hadden says
I would say that’s art! Water sculpture that is also functional! How creative! Would love to have one!

This is plain stupid. Have you considered the water splashes when you turn off and on? Messy table you will have.
Do you know a constant wet fruit can make them rotten faster?
Do you know that only low temperature can keep the fruit fresh longer?
I bet you don't know this..

i think this is a great concept, but there are many factors that have to be taken into consideration. i wont judge, but i would like to see this as more than a 3D model

I don't know about you, but a fruitbowl is a perfectly adequate storage space for my fruit. Unless I've left it there for months it doesn't get mouldy, or covered in dirt or insects, and I usually eat my fruit pretty soon after I buy it. So everything this is designed to do is actually pretty pointless.

water will splash all over the place. The power and pump could fluctuate at all or the water stream will over or undershoot the catchment well. Not very “green” to use energy to run when a simplt net would do. Other than the hip[ gimmick factor, good design is usually the simplest.
Framing a Basement says
This is such an awesome design. It should be used in some sci-fi books/movies. However, I agree with satisfEYEd. The water will spit and splash all over the place which would make a mess.

Are you going to be keeping the device outside? In the heat? Are you going to keep the heater on inside? True the water will eventually evaporate; however, if the device is inside the house, while the air conditioner is on, it would not only evaporate slowly you would also be around at some point in time to refill it.

Why are there SO MANY obnoxious comments repeating THE EXACT SAME THING.
On a separate note, I think this design is super cool, and has a lot of potential (centerpieces at parties like someone mentioned earlier?). The design is definitely not perfect and needs to be refined, but props to the designer for a good start!

Nevermind that
A- Most fruits have an accelerated rate of decomposition in the presence of moisture, and naturally the humidity inside a water curtain would be high
B- The design doesn’t seem to account for the fact that water won’t fall in a perfect shape, it will naturally splash a good bit unless the outer ‘moat’ area is much wider, meaning the thing will take up more counter space
C- I see no filtration unit on that counter sculpture, and even if there was one it’d quickly get used up with water pumping continuously through it, not to mention that it would make difficulties with water pressure. But with no filtration unit, you’re having dirty fountain water all around your produce, which will get full of bacteria and mold spores. And again since you’ll have a lot of that water building up inside the dome in humidity, you’ll have all that stuff actually held in close contact with the food, instead of kept out as you’d hope.
It’s a cute design for a fountain, but it’s just a terrible idea for this application. The designer may as well just abandon marketing it for food preservation, and sell it for what it is.

I would totally buy one of those only really big so it would go around my house that opens to a retina scan and use holy water to keep the vampires out.

I’ve carefully read over all the comments, arguments and general stupidity and futility. My simple response to all of this: Screw it! This thing looks cool. Who cares if it works? I’d buy one just to own it. It’s a neat conversation piece to say the least.
hgp says
Nice looking design but it wouldn’t work.
Water doesn’t behave in such a controlled manner. There would be splash droplets both inside (on the food) and outside (on the table). I work with water fountains all the time so I know the water would evaporate and moving water accelerates the process. I suspect a glass dome lid would be more effective and practical but I appreciate the idea.
