A Watch With No Face
Aurora is a watch that doesn’t have an apparent dial. There’s more of a transparent face with no signs of the hour or minutes hand. It’s not as if the designer forgot to put them there, he just got innovative and decided to perk up this analog piece by including funky laser light beams for the hands. The red beam indicates the minutes and the blue depicts the hour. They appear only when you tap the bevel edge around the watch ring; until then it’s just a hip jewelry around your wrist.

personally I think it fails every possible way. Needs to be touched to show its function (any normal watch doesn’t), it’s not ornamental (yet), it has no personality (unless you consider the personality of the hairy arm underneath, thanks Aron Rubin). But, hey, it’s got lasers, so it must be cool, in a very pre-teen way. Buh-humbug

Can’t really say that I like this design, style-wise is a little lacking (no personality, unless you consider your own arm very personable), and function-wise don’t understand how pressing the watch to see the time would be a good idea. Also, is automatic, and certified chronometer, and has lasers? Too much for my (poor) taste

If they added an accelerometer to it, so that you just had to hold it up to your hand in a looking at watch type of way, it would be much better.

I think the reason it’s still a concept is that it’s completely impractical with current tech. Don’t get me wrong, I would buy one of these things in a heartbeat.

I don’t see how this works.
Why is the beam stopping at the centre of the bezel? If you assume its just fading out then the beam would be so faint you couldn’t see it in daylight.
And how are the beams being generated? Are there 120 lasers mounted around the bezel which fire in turn, or is there a mechanical element that rotates two lasers?
Looks nice, but I don’t think it’ll replace my Mondaine any time soon.

Wonderful concept! Nothing short of brilliant. Hope this goes into production soon. If so, I believe you will sell a million of them. I would certainly love to own one.
One suggestion, though. As previously mentioned, I think seeing my hairy arm showing through would detract from the intended design effect. Might I suggest polished stone as a face material (black or grey granite, or perhaps onyx would be stunning IMHO). What’s more, no two watches would be alike, which would add to their uniqueness. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing your vision…

1) You won’t see the beams without something for them to shine on. It would need a built in fog machine. Lol.
2) The beams wouldn’t stop halfway without something in the middle to block them.
3) Armhair doesn’t make a nice watch face.
This would be better with some sort of backplate or translucent filling for the laser to shine on or through.

1. Yes you would see the beams as it is going through glass you would not need fog have you not ever seen a green laser or shined a laser through a window?
2.There only needs to be a spec of something in the center to block the laser beam like those etched crystal pictures you see in the mall or something that shine led from underneath and reflect off the etching so yes this would work.
3.If your wrist is that hairy then you need to visit a salon or maybe buy a hedge trimmer?

It’s a cool design in the photo, but in practice? Who wants to look at a ring with a bunch of arm hair inside it?

Looked long at the photo and couldn’t understand what I didn’t like in it, but now I think I know what: the watch has no shadow (it is a vampire watch that will suck you energy)
And about the fading lasers. Well I do understand that while inside the glass the beams would have some scattering thus the glass can’t be totally transparent and still trying to figure it out why lasers? I mean wouldn’t there be a possibility to hit an eye with it and damage it? The current concept would require either a lot of lasers, or a pair of lasers on a rotating mechanism (looking at the photo I presume the second). And if there are mechanics then you either will get a delay to see time, or just short lived batteries. Well, my opinion is that an OLED screen would be better. Besides, if it where an OLED screen (they can be transparent) then this watch could have more functions. One of the possible functions would be to set up how you’d like the hour to be displayed: analog, digital, binary/hex – anything you like. (Even up to a point that if you don’t have hairy arms, then the watch could draw them for you). Anyway, the concept is nice, maybe would buy such a watch if I saw it in the market, but later would regret if I bought it. And something tells me that this will stay a concept as it is.

Wow.. It’s amazing how stupid you people are. The design is amazing and I am sorry if you cannot figure out the mechanics then you shouldn’t even think about getting one e.i. “How does it work?” “No clue but its shiny..woooo lasers”!! It’s simple and ill explain. Ever heard o FIBER? How light can bend? Look it up if you if your still drooling over stupid. The glass is rounded much like a drop of water, there are TWO different colored lasers pointed at different angles so you will not see where it comes from but you will see where it’s going. If you look at the picture you see on the inside there are TWO guide rails. One for each laser, See it now? There we go your educated now. As for the “vampire” comment your just stupid look at the light angle? And you others who can’t stand a hairy wrist, In not sure if you’re a gorilla or what but I for one do not have a hairy wrist nor do I see many people WITH a hairy wrist. Stop making excuses about a design that is already a work of art.

If the watch goes into launch, would it make money?
For that answer we need a production cost and a price tag. And a business model on how it is marketed.
