Like a bartender for fragrances, NINU is a portable little gadget that “designs” the perfume you want by combining fragrances that you can then spray directly from its bottle-shaped form.
Call me old-fashioned, but I honestly didn’t think I’d stick around on this planet long enough to hear the phrase “smart-perfume” being casually thrown around… yet here we are. Meet NINU, a little handheld device that overhauls the centuries-old fragrance industry with technology. Perfumes, just like practically any other oronasal experience from food to drinks, is made by combining ‘ingredients’. The choice and intensity of these ingredients end up creating a perfume, so here’s a thought… why not mechanize it? Just like your fairly advanced coffee-maker can create cappuccinos, espressos, americanos, lattes, mochas, etc simply by playing around with ingredients and their measurements, NINU can design and ‘manufacture’ perfumes for men and women simply by combining multiple fragrance bases together in precisely calculated quantities. Think of it like a printer, that uses different ink cartridges to print out beautiful pictures.

Sure, it’s no Chanel or Burberry or Davidoff, but the way NINU disrupts the centuries-old fragrance industry is by simply offering versatility – 100 different scents inside 1 bottle. The NINU ditches the notion that you need to commit to a single 2-3 ounce bottle for a decade. Just like your outfits and personas change with each passing day, NINU allows you to change your fragrance too. The portable little device houses three vials of fluid inside that act as the base ingredients for the fragrance. With as many as 100 fragrance styles to choose from (all within NINU’s smartphone app), you can tailor-make the scent of your choice, picking between earthy, citrusy, floral, and unisex options.
The fragrance combinations are no accident either – they’re the expert handiwork of Dominique Moellhausen, winner of the “Perfumer of the Year” award at the 2020 Beautyworld Middle East Awards, who collaborated with the NINU team to design as many as 100 different fragrances, easily accessible through NINU’s app. Just choose the fragrance that you’re ‘feeling’ and the NINU device gets to work, doing its complex calibrating to mix the fragrance bases to get the accurate end result. A touch-sensitive panel lets you easily deploy the spray and voila! You’ve got an entire collection of perfumes all within one portable little gadget.
While the idea sounds simple on paper, what’s remarkable about the NINU is that it isn’t a massive tabletop device like your coffee maker. It’s a handheld, coffee-cup-sized contraption that you can carry with you and formulate perfumes literally on the go. That’s where the NINU’s complex engineering shines through. The device is about the size of a regular 100ml perfume bottle, which means it can still be held and used like one. On the appearance front, it looks like an opaque little cylinder with a sleek design, textured finish, and in black, white, or rose gold colors, fitting the part of a beautiful premium bottle. To use the NINU, all you do is fire the app and select a fragrance from the vast library the app offers. Once you do, the NINU mixes together the fragrances in precise quantities for a single ‘session’, and a touch button on the side of the bottle deploys the finely atomized spray of the fragrance of your choice. It’s worth noting that the fragrances are vegan, and they’re also formulated with a higher concentration than colognes and traditional Eau de parfums, allowing each spray of the NINU’s perfumes to last for over 12 hours.
The app comes with its own secret sauce too, as it learns from your preferences and analyzes the season, weather, and humidity in your city/region to recommend newer, better fragrances for you. It’s far more than what the current perfume industry offers, as fragrances are often designed in controlled environments, and they aren’t really made FOR you, your preferences, or your region. The process of finding the right perfume is basically one of trial and error. The NINU hopes to make it easy by giving you 100 different choices right in your hand, and also adding a layer of AI that recommends fragrances based on your preferences.
At €177 or $199, NINU makes for a pretty compelling purchase. It’s about as much as a high-end perfume from Gucci, Chanel, or Davidoff (I’m more of a Paco Rabanne guy myself), although NINU replaces that massive luxury brand markup with actual innovation, and the ability to have your entire perfume cabinet in a tiny handheld device that you can carry with you even while traveling. It charges via USB-C too, which means your power bank should suffice; and the NINU isn’t energy-intensive, so a single charge goes a long way. The device is up for pre-order and ships in May 2022.
