With a form that is defined by function, and defies everything we’ve really assumed we knew about torches, the EST Torch L1’s design puts ease-of-use first. Going against the notion that a torchlight is something you ‘point with’, the EST Torch L1 is L-shaped, kind of like a cross between a regular torch and your phone’s flashlight. Rather than holding it horizontally, you hold it vertically, as the bulb on the rim of the torch casts light forward. This design ‘simplifies’ how you hold a torch, easing stress on your wrist, while also allowing you to keep the torch standing upright, mount it on your head or body in a way that allows it to point forward, at an angle, or directly downward, and with the Torch L1’s magnetic base, lets you snap the torch to the hood of your car, pointing the light directly inside, making it a remarkable work-light.
Made for rugged outdoor use, the EST Torch L1 comes with all the obvious outdoor requirements and some rather pleasant new ones too. Its body is machined entirely from a single billet of aluminum, complete with a hard-anodized Type 3 scratch-resistant finish. The EST Torch L1’s build is durable enough to easily withstand long drops, and even survive being run over a car. The Torch L1 is rated IP68 dust and waterproof, allowing it to be used even underwater without any fuss. On the inside is a 1200 lumens light with a 120-meter beam distance. The Torch L1 runs on a high-capacity 3600 mAh rechargeable AA battery provided by EST, giving it a run time of up to 20 days. In order to ensure a waterproof build, the battery is rechargeable via a nifty mag-safe style USB cable that snaps to the Torch L1’s magnetic base, instantly charging it. In order to ensure you get the best out of the L1, it even comes with a head-strap and a rotating mount, allowing you to, as the title suggests, wear it.
The Torch L1’s differentiating factor lies in its simple relocation of the torch’s lamp. Rather than facing forward, its periscope-inspired schematic gives you the ability to hold it naturally (like you’d hold a traditional wooden torch) but also lets you stand it on its flat base, either on an elevated surface or on the floor, letting it point forwards, rather than upwards. The magnetic base gives you the added advantage to snap it onto magnet-friendly surfaces too, and with the head-mount included, you can wear it on your person, simply rotating it to make sure you’ve got the beam of light pointing exactly where you need it. Makes you really question why we don’t have more torches designed this way, doesn’t it?
