It Was A Rock Lobster

Anytime I can get one of the best lyrics from the B52’s into a blog post, I’m there. I’m not just pulling this out of thin air tho. This multimedia device is called the Lobster and if you squint really hard, the segmented pieces sorta look like a lobster’s tail.

It’s composed of an LCD screen that acts as a base for a multitude of media modules. By snapping those modules on, you further extend the Lobster’s features. The cool thing about the segmented design is it makes a perfect arm band, that is if you add enough modules. Sneaky huh?

This was the underlying concept of the Handspring Visor PDAs. They would market the initial platform and then there were third party plug-ins (I had an MP3 player, a GPS Navigator, a Memory extension, and a camera, none of which were particularly excellent). The problem was that you couldn;t use two modules at the same time, e.g. the GPS and the camera.

I like the daisy chained modules on the lobster, but I think that Apple’s dominance of the product would prevent anyone at the moment from being able to anticipate enough market share to fund this many pieces of hardware.

I would buy this in a heartbeat.

that is pretty cool, I must say. The most obvious attachment would be storage upgrades… lots of possibilities.

That’s great. If I could buy it, I wouldn’t matter how much it is.

The best aspect of this is that they could make the base in the relatively affordable range, and allow those who want more to spend more. Knowing most consumers would be all happy about how it’s cheaper than other devices, then eventually buy all the other stuff anyways. It’s like selling a burger for a dollar, then charging a buck twenty for a soda.

This looks sweet, I will definitely be checking it out if it ever makes it to production.

  • Linuxgalore says:

Looks nice but it wont go into production in this form factor. Its too complex thus expensive and failure prone. When designing electronics that humans have to interact with you always avoid the multi-part modular design because you increase you failure points big time.

This is a really neat design. I would love to have this myself.

A gadget like that, that combines loads of stuff and keep it in a rather non-taken part of oneself (your arm and not your already overpacked pockets) I believe would interest many people. although, small parts are always easy to get lost and small holds are perhaps easy to break of.

pretty cool idea but looks expensive and a bit pointless really…
cell phones have pretty much all of those features and are roughly the same size but you cant strap them to your arm….well you could do if you wanted to, but you’ed look pretty weird

    酷…!!

  • M says:

Add a phone module. The benefit here is a person could barebones it but add on ONLY what they wanted. I’m tired of buying tech devices that have lots of stuff I don’t want cuz they aren’t executed well. My Motorola phone has an MP3 built in but the interface is weird, the extra cords for headphones are always somewhere else or lost and it’s just not good overall. The one thing I could see here is battery issues but add ons that really WORK could be great.
