Modern Trophy in Ancient Form

Modern Trophy in Ancient Form

These modern trophies, designed by Nick Ross and Fraser Reid for the Arts and Business Scotland awards, are reminiscent of vessels given out during the Olympic games in ancient Greece. Ancient trophies were meant to hold sacred oils, but over time the form has shifted from a container to what is merely a symbol of its past function. Even this modern trophy’s tripodal support gives a nod to similar ancient Roman stands, and places an equal sense of importance on the plaster vessel.

Sex on Wheels, Vandenbrink GTO

The Vandenbrink GTO has been awarded the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2008. The award is given by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and is the oldest and most prestigious awards program worldwide, elevating the best and finest new design and design innovation for products. This vehicle is excruciatingly beautiful, even for someone who prefers minimalism, I find beauty this car, evoking American muscle and Italian styling. Oh and BTW, it’s got 750 hp! Congrats to Vandenbrink!

An Encore For The Opus Design Winners

An Encore For The Opus Design Winners

The winners of the Opus Design Award were announced recently and the entries might help solve a lot of our little nagging problems with eyewear.  The gold prize went to Nick Jinkinson who designed around transition lenses that more completely transitioned in the sun.  Runners up include foldout frames, built in lens cleaner, and what can only appear to be the Opti-Grab from the 1979 comedy The Jerk.  Let’s hope none of them cause wearers to become permanently and irreversibly cross-eyed.
