The Turning Point For A Phone
I love covering concept phones that may not have substance to them (tech-backing), but nevertheless are fun to read about. Featured here is a concept Sony Ericsson FH Mobile Phone that has a pivotal point to it. It flips vertical on a pivot to mimic a phone and rotates sideways to become a viewing screen for the media functions and web browsing. The phone even becomes an intercom of sorts when split into two, allowing easy communication between the two parties holding each end. What a high-tech walkie-talkie this would make!

The real battle is this vs the nokia kinetic future phone! http://bit.ly/9LLRjB

That Kinetic phone looks like such shit. Who leaves their phone on the table? The bottom piece looks uncomfortable, and it would still need a vibrate for when it was in a pocket.

Amazing idea, but I'm not sure it would ever work in practice. I can imagine the edges of the screen would get damaged very easily?

looks nice, but I'm afraid will break quickly after such manipulation

I hold my hand in my right hand (as majority of people do) I will cover up half the screen in flip mode with my thumb!!.. Just put the screens on the other size (mirror flip the image

But why is it running Apple iOS ?? (Look carefully at the bottom of the top screen)

idk abt the phone running iOS but the concept is really great. i love it.

I like it… I loved the Samsung U740, and wore that phone into the ground, but the double hinge never wore out or broke. This is the touchscreen smartphone equivalent, and I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
It'd have to use Andriod/WebOS because it is far to complex for Apple crap. Buttons? Moving Parts? Yeah, that's not any type of digital fruit.
As much as I like the Split-for-intercom idea, that's the opposite of what you want to do with a mobile device. "I though I gave you the other half of the phone!" "I gave it back!" "No, you didn't!"

Its funny, the top screen seems to be running iOS and the bottom one has a windows logo on it.

Thats exactly what i was thinking, and in one of the pictures the status bar looks android based. Phone 3-WAY!

It's a concept phone. No real hardware or software used. The artist just added screen shots from whatever he/she felt like.

I really dont se the point in this. Really. I want my phone to do all that? Makes no sense. You have plenty of places to watch video content and browse internet. And plenty widescreen mobile phones with simple design solutions. Why reinvent the wheel for god sakes?

This would be uber-cool, but I'm not so sure about the split down the middle of the screen which obviously couldn't be any other way. Still, I'll take one….

It's just SHINY. you take one look at it and say oooOOO. just like people with the first iphones and ipads; you buy it right when it comes to stores and pay a shitload for it, then a couple months later the price drops, newer phones without all the bugs are released and you get pissed. honestly, is all that stuff really necessary? 2 screens at separate, 2 separate hinges, when it's going to end up being the same size as a Droid. just buy a Droid or iphone.
Jim says
This would be cool, but every sony ericsson phone i've had has broken within 1 year. I had to get one replaced and the replacement phone broke as well, as did the replacement after that. all within one year.

I love the front design, but a flip phone like this just wouldn't be functional. That exposed screen edge would easily damage. And as for taking it apart, that's just a disaster waiting to happen.

Mack says
Looks a little too complicated for practical use and could break easily. And the 2 parts separating would never work. "oh no! where did I leave the other half of my phone?" More so, if it divided in 2 pieces like that, it would require 2 batteries, which would make the overall phone much more expensive and heavier (and probably bigger). I suppose it could be done, by having 2 smaller than usual batteries in each half, and when they are reconnected, the entire phone will run off of a combined total power for both batteries. The biggest drawback would be that every time you split the two parts up, your battery life would decrease by half.

Its a good idea. Except the screen would have a big seam down the middle in "TV mode". There is no way around that, there will always be an edge on the screens.
And from an engineering perspective, the two axis pivot is a huge headache. Pretty sure its impossible, or else it would have been done before. Mobile phone companies have been thinking of this sort of thing for 10 years, for sure. What about the 360 wiring for power, display and everything else?
I honestly can't stand this site when it comes up in stumbleupon. Not one idea is doable or even remotely realistic. These designers need to learn some basic engineering and maybe look at the inside of gadgets for once, because clearly all this junk is just daydreams. I think of these ideas offhand all the time, and dismiss them for being retarded.
And don't tell me we need people to dream up this stuff. Most of this site is unrealistic even if supermaterials existed, they just break the laws of physics. It is just art, not design if it ignores certain givens like strength, modern and near-future technology, and environmental issues. The age of the inventor is dead, unless one can take everything into account.
This is one of the better ideas IMO, but again, still has major flaws.

"Pretty sure its impossible" Isn't that what they said about flying a while back, amongst other things that we now take for granted?

i think you should install the camera on the horrible hinge, so the most important design feature of your phone do something more than just pivot.
