Flameless Outdoor Cooker for Campers

The Outdoor Chef is a shortlisted entry in the 2011 Australian Design Award-James Dyson Award. It’s an all-in-one camp cooker designed for portability, storage, food prep and of course cooking. The flameless induction cooktop is perfect for fire restricted camp sites and considering this is from a country recently ravaged by fire – it emphasizes safety without compromising the joy of being outdoors.

The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers. It’s run by the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson’s charitable trust, as part of its mission to inspire young people about design engineering.

Just a few months ago, I tried cooking with induction for the first time, and was astounded (picked up a 1500 Watt unit for about $60 on sale). Previously, my cooking had taken place on old electric coil-type burners (house doesn’t have gas). This amateur chef is a convert!

This design is wonderful: looks easy to clean, packs compactly, and is very usable for cooking activities. It could use a carrying handle somewhere, or maybe I’m just not seeing it. I don’t know if many (car) campsites have the required power for this, but modern generators are small, clean, quiet/unobtrusive, and fairly inexpensive, and probably good to have when caravaning or car-camping.

  • We bought ourselves an old kero heater for the shack and camping. I used one when I lived in Sydney in our flat. Pump out heaps of heat but a rather big and sometime smell. Like the Rinnai one Redback. Like the idea of the Coleman unit. Went hiking over winter and had a little single burner cooker on a litle screw on gas cylinder. Warmed the tent up nicely while cooking breakfast. LOL
