No More Overspills Even If You Are Blind

Try this, blindfold yourself and pour a glass of water without spilling it over. Ok, make this tougher, fill in exactly ¾ th cup. Tough? Yeah, that’s how hard it is for the blind people to fill in mugs of beverages without spilling. Dipping the pinkie to anticipate the levels is ok for cold stuff, but what about scalding hot coffee! The Braun Bell Mug has 3 indicative levels on the handle and liquid-level sensors within the mug. The blind folks only need to choose their levels and keep pouring till the bell sounds.

how do you power this item? does it stand up to dishwasher use?

    • DaLk says:

the base or handle could accomodate a battery, but keen remark about dishwasher : the speaker has a hole, thus… simple washing is already problematic. but it should be fairly simple to fix ^^

Great initial idea, but wouldn’t it be possible to make a passive design instead?

I think it would be cheaper and result in a more resilient design if only metal were used. The metal would go through the cup, connecting the contained fluid to the outside of the cup. When the fluid passes the metal sensor/pin, it would cause a temperature change that should be easy to register by the person holding the cup (unless the fluid and cup has the exact same temperature initially).

Or, maybe even several shapes on the inside of the cup, that would cause an acoustic change of the fluid being poured, so it would be possible to hear when the fluid passes each of these acoustic spots..

Just ideas. I just don’t like everything we use to need batteries (maybe when wireless electricity is here this would no longer be a problem).

I guess the accustic solution is the most simple one, I liked it.

        • Lamah says:

Continuing with the acoustic idea… It seems like the sound of water being poured into a cup changes as the level in the cup rises already. In fact I saw reference to this technique on several blind support websites. Of course it’s nice to have a definite confirmation when you might end up with boiling water spilling onto your hand!

Why not have a short float integrated into a chamber of the handle, like with a jug of water. Arrange it so that when the liquid level rises enough, the top of the float will poke out through a hole in the top of the handle chamber, touching your thumb to tell you that the cup is full.

  • Berker says:

I think so, there are a lot of ways to do the same thing without batteries. For example, a height adjustable metal pin could be used. It extends outside the cup and with a suitable material between cup and metal, it can tell you if it’s inside a liquid or not by flicking it. (the ding! voice will change when the pin is inside a different environment, in this case, a liquid one.)

  • several ideas!

but the question concerning blind people become interesting in any way

  • tudza says:

Hmm, being blind is not a new thing. What are the current solutions to this “problem”?

    • CBidwill says:

My wife is blind. The only way she knows when to stop pouring is by putting her finger in the cup, as the “problem” page states.

I like this invention. I’ve worked with a lot of people who live with disabilities and am always interested in the novel approaches to everyday life tasks that some inventors come up with.

  • With the article’s device you need multiple cups because if the blind person has guests he needs to fill their cups too. A better idea would be a device which attaches to ANY cup. You then only need one per household.

I’d use something which hooks onto the side of the cup with a floating ball inside. I’ve seen kettles which work in this way, though as a visual indicator. For a blind person the incoming liquid into the tube would push the ball against a switch, connected to an audible signal – a buzzer or bell. It doesn’t have to involve a battery, you could have a simple spring-loaded thing (twist to reset) which slapped against a bell when the liquid lifted up the ‘hair trigger’ of the ball/switch.

Perhaps I’ve made that sound more complex, but basically it’s this: liquid lifts the switch, bell goes ‘ting’, reset and put in next cup. Height adjustable with a sliding hook on the side.

    Awesome!
    luv u guys~ 🙂

  • Brian says:

Maybe little bubbles than get filled with the liquid, a small balloon or something, three on different positions.

  • Brian says:

Or a pin on the outside that rises with a floatable something inside the cup.

  • that’s the problem with many peaple like me 🙁
    thnx guys 🙂

  • Sam says:

when filling up a large glass it makes a noise, as it gets fuller less air is moved out of the glass so the pitch gets slightly lower its just one of those things people never think much about but i'm sure some people figured out how to work with this
