In 2020 We Can Wear Sony Computers On Our Wrist
Our present need for internet connectivity is so profound that secondary devices like the Nextep Computer are bound to happen. Developed to be worn as a bracelet, this computer concept is constructed out of a flexible OLED touchscreen. Earmarked for the year 2020, features like a holographic projector (for screen), pull-out extra keyboard panels and social networking compatibility, make the concept plausible. Ten years from now is not too far away, so how many of you think we’d be buying such gadgets?

This concept looks cool. But I think the horizon of a computer should go beyond personalization.
Many OEMs think there would be more number of computers than people by 2020, then why not make a network of computers possible.
Lets connect and compute from multiple devices at a time. The comfort of a home-theater system can be integrated with a cell-phone watch / computer. Both can share compute resources if in need.
I think it is possible, but what we might be missing today is a high-speed wireless/wired communication medium on our hand-helds.
Anon says
>>then why not make a network of computers possible.
What the hell are you talking about you jackass?? This has been possible for decades. What do you call the internet??
Vinod says
Internet is a way to exchange information. I was talking about a way to exchange compute resources. In lay man’s terms, to use the CPU power within a network. This is a new concept which I think would flourish. Please read through the whole thing before you comment.
Jackass says
Hey dumbass what you are explaining is the internet. you want a network. no one has connected everything yet because no one likes to give care for what you have decided unprecedented!
Anony says
Vinod was referring to the distribution of computing resources, a way to share CPU power and the like between computers/devices.
It would be nifty though it seems difficult, now, at least, but who knows what will come about tomorrow?
tboz says
stop trolling. he’s not talking about the internet. what he’s talking about (i assume) is closer to cloud computing. less a computer on your wrist, more a network device that sends your input to a full computer, which processes your request and sends back the results.
anon says
That would be pretty neat, just enough computing power to connect to the cloud, and act as a remote interface and display…

i would hope that someone would come up with an idea a little more ground breaking. why not just tape a smart phone to your wrist? if that is all they can come up with then we are screwed.

This has been possible for a while, the 3d modeling program 3D Studio Max has the capability to render your projects with multiple computers by just running a program on all the other computers you want to take advantage of and changing a setting in the rendering options.
There are also more relevant uses like media sharing that you can actually go use right now. The one that I’ve personally used and enjoyed was Orb ( http://www.orb.com/ ) it allows you to stream anything you choose to share on your home computer to any internet connected device. That includes music movies and pictures.
Winamp has also been including a similar feature for a few months called Winamp Remote ( http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?&threadid=279352 FAQ for Remote).
Either way the concept it cool, and unless we get something like WiMAX all over then having it internet connected would probably be a pain or expensive.

Hey genius, don't forget that if people have multiple devices and that there are more computers out there than people, we will have an obesity issue. Not like we don't have one now… This will only encourage people to never leave their homes and do anything in the outside world. Oh yeah! We then create a fear of the outdoors and all the germs in we encounter outside. Geezus man, you don't think ahead or even about your future children and what this will be doing to them. I am sorry that you got bullied as a child and that you always got sick! We will always have people like that, This won't help anyone except to learn to cower in fear!!

And what does this do that a normal smartphone of the time won’t be able to?
Tyler says
What does this do that normal smart phones of the time won’t beable to do?
One I assume is processor power that currently Rivals what we are able to have in our home PC’s at the moment. Given that progress of CPU’s over the past 3-5 years I wouldn’t be surprised that in 10 years from now.
While a “smartphone” might be able to accomplish the same things as this concept, the fact that it’s NOT a phone is probably what people are interested in. Notice the keyboard, and full sized screen? It’s not the size of a sticky note.
Also, as with changes technology has been going through, I can almost guarentee that while one of those sides will contain a motherboard, the other will probably contain swapably BUS devices, such as videocards. This I am assure will outdo what these teenagers and their smart phones will ever accomplish.

No, Jon is absolutely right. There's no reason to wear a computer on your wrist when most functionality of a smart phone can do what most people have a computer for anyway.
And Tyler, who says in 2020 smartphones won't be able to duplicate that capability? That seems to be the current route things are taking; it wouldn't surprise me if development continued and we ended up with tiny computers in our hands.
Actually, the fact that this thing CAN'T make calls seems pretty outdated. The design is pretty, but ultimately redundant.
undragonslayer7 says
Nothing. As computing technology advances, the line between a phone and a computer continues to fade. And soon it will be non-existent. I would think that this would have Skype, making it like a portable, free, and cooler looking cell-phone. Also it will out perform the smart phones of today, but in the future the only difference will be that this one looks cooler and will have a bigger screen and keyboard.

I suggest you look at any phone made in the last 5 years. They ARE computers. They access the web. They can write documents. They can play games. Seems pretty damn computer-like to me.
When it comes down to it, the only thing that sets the phone apart from a computer is that they can call other people, unless you own an iPhone. And that’s getting even more disputable with VoIP programs like Skype.

Sure. Except for in depth customization to make it better, faster, more graphically inclined. The ability to surf the internet without paying murder prices for it. Storing well over 200 GBs of music, photos, AND videos. Interactive applications that require more GB space than a phone has. Levels of personalization. The ability to make calls without paying for a phone bill. Some other stuff. Aside from all that garbage you're all totally right about phones being computers.
@FPRobber says
I can customize my Android phone better than my Windows 7 PC. I don't pay murder prices (4€/GB) and can make calls for free using Skype, Fring or sipdroid. And I store all my music on my phone. It will take some time until I can store all my videos on my phone, but a huge clunky wristcomputer isn't worth it, just to carry my hundreds of GBs of videos with me all the time. If I want to watch a few movies on the go, my µSD has more than enough space for that.
I still agree that a desktop computer is far superior to a smartphone, but a wristcomputer is definitely not the solution.
undragonslayer7 says

Next time you try to be some holier-than-thou smartass how about you research your facts, just a little, eh? The phones they are talking about are obviously smart phones. The definition of a smart phone?: "A mobile phone offering advanced functions which may normally only be found on a PC."
Definition of a computer: "A computer is a programmable machine that receives input, stores and manipulates data, and provides output in a useful format." So by that definition alone, any machine that receives input [a voice, number, etc], stores and manipulates data [recording the voice, saving a number, etc], and provides output in a useful manner [sends your voice to another unit, sends text or numbers, sends pictures, etc] are all computers… Thus, Cellphones, for a good 10 years have been doing this.

And btw you pay monthly for internet so that was a stupid argument, and the capacity for them will only get bigger, and i don't suggest watching a movie on a phone whether or not you can.

You could say its computer, but you could also say that its a phone because you would need some kind of wireless data service to be able to use social networking, etc. I guess you could say that this concept is really a smartphone with a bigger keyboard, a bigger, flexible screen, and a projector. Definitely cool though.

they can do it now this very day… however that’s not profitable $. Its important for business to not build the best possible product. They need to build many inefficient ones first so ppl go out and buy that first $$$, then make newer, cooler, slimmer models so you got to buy that new model $$$, then they go release a way better product with way more features so you need that 1 $$$. this cycle continues maximizing profit($$$)for business and creating a ton of waste for the earth.
an easy exp to see–> 1080i tv, 1080p tv, 1080i 3D capable tv with glasses you need to ware then. (ill predict the future now) 1080p 3Dtv with out the need to use glasses. How do i know, ill let you know… they can build the 1080p 3Dtv with out the need to use glass’s right now, however its about $$$ profit so they need to plan the releasing of inferior products so they can bank more $$$, milk it for all its worth… lol what a lovely system we have

This is so true, it’s disappointing to see how many people are ignorant of this situation. I for one find this abhorrent and practically offensive. Societal norms are practically being controlled by this trend, turning many people, including kids (especially kids), into the ultimate, blind consumers.
healthcare reform? we need consumerism reform as well, business ethic reform.
if you start a business, you will pretty much lose money the first few years, once it’s established, profit is a great thing, but as the business evolves, possibly into a larger company or corporation, if they ever begin to REMOTELY lose money, they blow the whistle and everyone goes stir crazy trying to get more promotions out. Big boss can’t take a pay cut, oh no sir, they’d rather cut the trend of losses, or employees, rather than lessen anything in their lives. That’s the problem with these companies. Society has bred these ignorant, selfish, and inhumane butterballs always gasping for more because that’s what they think life is about.
I’m part of a company that’s similar to this description, so i’ve got a bit of an idea. I’m not saying I’m 100% right, and part of this is a bit of speculation, but i can guarantee you it’s not far from the truth.

The only difficulty in development of this device that I see is durability. With such, what I assume to be, an expensive and fragile item in one’s possession – who would dare wear it on their wrist? I know that Rolex’s and the like are also expensive, but they are normally made of metal and made to withstand a degree of abuse. Not to say that it can’t be done – not at all, but making a computer that is sleek, compact, wearable, won’t overheat, etc. could still prove to be a task. I do believe it to be a feasible endeavor but there will be little challenges. At any rate, I’m a destitute student and won’t be investing in one. Hehe.
Matt says
Do a google search for Graphene and you’ll get an idea of the kind of material these things will be made of.
Graphene is a sheet of carbon as thick as a single atom yet stronger than any material we’ve ever encountered (diamonds are made of carbon and so a sheet of perfect carbon would therefore be stronger than that). Graphene can also conduct electricity and so can be used as all the circuitry you need in these devices.
So it’s very likely devices like this would be ultra light yet stronger than diamond. As long as we figure out how to mass manufacture at that scale. 2020 may be feasible.
Hawkins2210 says
Also check out Gorilla Glass by Corning: http://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/characteristi...
It looks like it has potential to live up to the durability and lightweight needs as far as screen protection goes. And it's probably cheaper than Graphene.
A thinker says
I agree that it overheating is a problem and I can't see a way to fix it at this time, it would be tricky to make this wearable, but there is a way to make it durable and compact (considering we already have iphones and many other tiny devices, which also tie into the sleek area.) . The only other problem I can see is the cost. I think it's a great idea though and would love to see it made and out on the market.
undragonslayer7 says
overheating: materials that don't heat up quickly/don't melt easily. Or very tiny ultra-fast fans.
cost: the economy grows, it will be like buying an expensive notebook computer.

I can’t say much but that is a concept for another future device from us here at Sony… We have a working prototype but that part that sticks out. Its not like that. These pictures just emphasize that there is something at that place on the device such as a camera. It has a very high quality and flexible type of plexiglass to prevent scratching since you may rub up against some rough materials or trip and fall on it. If this was not a very durable product it wouldn’t be worth it since its made to be taken anywhere. And by anywhere I mean anywhere(its waterproof and can withstand 300 ft.). It will be expected about $700 when it first comes out in 6-8 years. It may be more or less depending on how things change. The price is what we expect it to be by judging the economy and the progression of technology and resources in the past decade.
By the way everything I just said is not true nor do I work for Sony.

If this is going to work, they’re going to have to make it A LOT more fashionable. It’s going to take one hell of an advertising campaign to get this thing to catch on. Not to be a Debbie downer, but this does not attract a female audience whatsoever, nor is it by Apple, so more likely than not, people are going to hate it.
It’s clunky and obvious. No Paris Hilton/Marc Jacobs/Lady Gaga/any of the aforementioned people’s fans are going to be caught dead wearing it in public unless they make it not (I hate to use the word) geeky as all hell.
All this is made worse by the fact that it probably will cost an arm and a leg. It’s a great concept, but I strongly worry if it will integrate successfully into the real world.
Bleh says
What the hell is up with you people and your “fashions”, its a freaking computer, it doesn’t have to look good for people to buy it, so long as it’s functional then it has done its job.
Who cares what dim witted celebrity uses them? Are you so self conscious that you need some celebrity’s approval before you make your purchase? Regardless if Paris Hilton (or whatever other clueless, dim witted celebrity you worship) uses one or not, you will never be in the same league as she is, nor will you ever achieve that level of fame, her social status or even come close to have even a fraction of her wealth…
These aren’t toys, they’re meant to be productive for people on the go who doesn’t quite need a full laptop but needs something better than a smartphone. They’re not meant for the average Joe to carry around to try to seem more important than he really is, or to show off to friends… And most importantly, no gadget will ever get you “girls”, if you think it will, you’re sadly mistaken and should probably leave mommy’s basement more often.
MikeyG says
I apologize. I didn’t mean to offend anyone, and I see your point. I understand what the product is and what it would be used for; however, I just predict that it will have a difficult time integrating into society. There is a reason there is a green/pink and white version, and I believe that it is because it is Sony’s hope to reach a broad audience, including women and girls.
As I’ve already reiterated, I think it is a great concept, and no where did I say that I would not buy it. I am simply an advertiser giving my input. I may have been harsh in my criticism, and Paris Hilton may have been a controversial example, but I remain adamant in my opinion.

From a woman's point of view, I wouldn't care what colour it was because I'd be purchasing it for it's functionality, not it's contribution to my daily wardrobe. I really do hope that not all advertisers believe that something has to be pink, sparkly, and endorsed by a "famous" person in order to draw a female audience. I would further hope that most females aren't so ridiculous that they would only be intersted if it were. On that note, I wonder if average people would be interested at all in such a "geeky" item, even if it were fashionable. I can't see most of the people I know ever being interested in this even if the most popular people in Hollywood endorsed it and it were the most magnificent colours – they simply have no need for constant connectivity. I think some items aren't designed for the masses, just specific groups – like geeks.
I'm interested to see if this concept will be taken further, and what capabilities it would have overall. I saw a TED talk about a "6th sense" device once, and I think I'd be a bit more interested in that than this. Now if they combined the two, THAT would be an amazing gadget!

Computers need to be more integrated and need a more human interface. What we have are gadgets for nerds that take too much time and energy to use. Like it or not Star Trek had it right. Speaking to a computer as you would to another person is the ultimate vision of the future. Everything electronic should be connected, it would take the guess work out of analysis. Just about any body could fix their own problems, it would be like the ultimate mentor. It would truly take humanity to a new level, a much better place, a world with less unsolvable contradictions, where truth prevails.

And there are still places where you can escape from today's busy world. I (a huge internet nerd) take a yearly trip into the wilderness (actual wilderness, not just the park) and find the lakes, trees, and animals very beautiful and awe-inspiring. And Earth's wilderness isn't the best, imagine a world where people take trips into the wilderness of space, and appreciate "a galaxy rising"

How silly…. do they take practicality into consideration? I'm pretty sure I don't want my thousands of dollars exploding the first time I trip and fall down, or bang my wrist against something by accident. A couple hundred dollar phone protected at least by being kept away in your pocket is already easily broken, a computer with projections etc on a wrist is just foolish. Warning: do not wear this wrist-computer unless at your desk and do not eat or drink with it on? Oh, might as well have a normal computer at my desk with a comfortable keyboard and mouse then huh.

Warning: do not wear this wrist-computer unless at your desk and do not eat or drink with it on? Oh, might as well have a normal computer at my desk with a comfortable keyboard and mouse then huh.

The conceptual design for this computer is phenominal with few potential drawbacks. The most obvious of which is the not-so-aesthetically-pleasing bulge which houses the projector. The potential for overheating is there because the majority of the surface area is being used as a screen or is in contact with the user's wrist. However, this problem could be solved by increasing the thickness allowing for more ventilation. I do have one question. If you look at image 6 you can see the right half of the computer touch pad has a picture of a mouse. Will you manuver that mouse to controll the cursor or will that entire screen act as a track pad?

This concept is a complete joke. What need would this fulfill that a smart phone doesnt at this time? Also, this gadget looks entirely overbearing on your arm, making it a pain to travel with it. In my mind, this would a step BACK 10 years. if they want to make technology more useful, combine everything. Then after thats done invent something else like Gore did with the internet. I'm fairly sure a wristwatch video call phone is already a producible product. Soon we will be making video calls from home to our friends and family. Just like the second Back to the Future movie.

Great. Then we can all look like high-risk-for-flight felons and people under house arrest. I'm comparing this to the GPS ankle bracelets. I'd rather have a 7 pound laptop sitting in a bag somewhere than walk around with e monstrosity like this on my wrist. That being said I guess it's not a bad option if you don't want to carry a bag somewhere and want to slap in on real quick to keep your hands free. This is mostly speaking from the consumer perspective of moving around daily life. Such a cumbersome thing would know into and catch on everything as you moved through the world. I can see where it might have more use as a wearable if you were able to access its functionality as a part of a job; say taking orders and inventory, being a part of a work team staying in communication and relaying data, etc. But the keyboard still requires it to be removed and laying it out on a table. I think the designs are cool but I'm not sure the practical side of the product is all that genius, at least as a wearable, or as a significant reduction of the cumbersomeness of laptops.
OH, and there is not screen without a project surface. In that regard, how is this different from an iPhone that bends?

What sizes will it come it? Exta thick wrist? Dainty bird-bone thin person? Medium only?
The ability to project the screen is cool, but keeping something in a pocket is easier than on the arm…what happens if you have to wash your hands? Or put on a coat? Practical technology needs to work for practical living.

I mean a computer on your wrist? Lets try and keep things in perspective and leave computers where they are safe. In a Controlled environment.

This is interesting. Not fantastic, as others have pointed out without much elegence. This device is better than a smartphone (if comfortable to wear) as it solves the input issue – full keyboards are indefinitly easier to use than even the best mobile thumb interface. I could see it as a "smartphone" that never has to take up a pocket or add weith to the purse, that could be continually trickle-charged using a person's natural movement. It looks like the designer was trying a bit too hard… without outrageous battery innovations, there's no way to power both screens and a projector, nor have much reason to do both.

I have watched the progress of computers from large framed room sized monsters to palm tops and also of mobile phones running a similar course. I can can see the time is approaching when both merge and we would all have this small accessory on our wrists. The ” Beam me up Scottie” effect. We do not have to go through all the stages visualled but the day is nearly upon us.

I feel that by the year 2015 this will already be in market, process and store more information then the best computers out here today, make calls, probably even keep a check on all your vital systems, won't compare to a full computer of that age, but will be how a smartphone is today compared to a full sized computer, our technology does increase at a rapid rate, 5 years ago, people still saved files on a floppy disk, now we have chips smaller than a dime that can store 5x+ more information then it ever could, cellphones couldn't access the internet and could hold 30 inbox texts, now they can process faster than computers 5+ years ago, this idea is completely possible, and to all those who are complaning about "their ideas being stolen" think about it this way, are you that selfish that you would rather have credit for something then your amazing idea get out there and maybe help the world seriously calm down and don't tink about yourself for once
