In 2020 We Can Wear Sony Computers On Our Wrist
Our present need for internet connectivity is so profound that secondary devices like the Nextep Computer are bound to happen. Developed to be worn as a bracelet, this computer concept is constructed out of a flexible OLED touchscreen. Earmarked for the year 2020, features like a holographic projector (for screen), pull-out extra keyboard panels and social networking compatibility, make the concept plausible. Ten years from now is not too far away, so how many of you think we’d be buying such gadgets?

This concept looks cool. But I think the horizon of a computer should go beyond personalization.
Many OEMs think there would be more number of computers than people by 2020, then why not make a network of computers possible.
Lets connect and compute from multiple devices at a time. The comfort of a home-theater system can be integrated with a cell-phone watch / computer. Both can share compute resources if in need.
I think it is possible, but what we might be missing today is a high-speed wireless/wired communication medium on our hand-helds.
Anon says
>>then why not make a network of computers possible.
What the hell are you talking about you jackass?? This has been possible for decades. What do you call the internet??
Vinod says
Internet is a way to exchange information. I was talking about a way to exchange compute resources. In lay man’s terms, to use the CPU power within a network. This is a new concept which I think would flourish. Please read through the whole thing before you comment.
Jackass says
Hey dumbass what you are explaining is the internet. you want a network. no one has connected everything yet because no one likes to give care for what you have decided unprecedented!
Anony says
Vinod was referring to the distribution of computing resources, a way to share CPU power and the like between computers/devices.
It would be nifty though it seems difficult, now, at least, but who knows what will come about tomorrow?
tboz says
stop trolling. he’s not talking about the internet. what he’s talking about (i assume) is closer to cloud computing. less a computer on your wrist, more a network device that sends your input to a full computer, which processes your request and sends back the results.
anon says
That would be pretty neat, just enough computing power to connect to the cloud, and act as a remote interface and display…

i would hope that someone would come up with an idea a little more ground breaking. why not just tape a smart phone to your wrist? if that is all they can come up with then we are screwed.

This has been possible for a while, the 3d modeling program 3D Studio Max has the capability to render your projects with multiple computers by just running a program on all the other computers you want to take advantage of and changing a setting in the rendering options.
There are also more relevant uses like media sharing that you can actually go use right now. The one that I’ve personally used and enjoyed was Orb ( http://www.orb.com/ ) it allows you to stream anything you choose to share on your home computer to any internet connected device. That includes music movies and pictures.
Winamp has also been including a similar feature for a few months called Winamp Remote ( http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?&threadid=279352 FAQ for Remote).
Either way the concept it cool, and unless we get something like WiMAX all over then having it internet connected would probably be a pain or expensive.

Hey genius, don't forget that if people have multiple devices and that there are more computers out there than people, we will have an obesity issue. Not like we don't have one now… This will only encourage people to never leave their homes and do anything in the outside world. Oh yeah! We then create a fear of the outdoors and all the germs in we encounter outside. Geezus man, you don't think ahead or even about your future children and what this will be doing to them. I am sorry that you got bullied as a child and that you always got sick! We will always have people like that, This won't help anyone except to learn to cower in fear!!

And what does this do that a normal smartphone of the time won’t be able to?
Tyler says
What does this do that normal smart phones of the time won’t beable to do?
One I assume is processor power that currently Rivals what we are able to have in our home PC’s at the moment. Given that progress of CPU’s over the past 3-5 years I wouldn’t be surprised that in 10 years from now.
While a “smartphone” might be able to accomplish the same things as this concept, the fact that it’s NOT a phone is probably what people are interested in. Notice the keyboard, and full sized screen? It’s not the size of a sticky note.
Also, as with changes technology has been going through, I can almost guarentee that while one of those sides will contain a motherboard, the other will probably contain swapably BUS devices, such as videocards. This I am assure will outdo what these teenagers and their smart phones will ever accomplish.

No, Jon is absolutely right. There's no reason to wear a computer on your wrist when most functionality of a smart phone can do what most people have a computer for anyway.
And Tyler, who says in 2020 smartphones won't be able to duplicate that capability? That seems to be the current route things are taking; it wouldn't surprise me if development continued and we ended up with tiny computers in our hands.
Actually, the fact that this thing CAN'T make calls seems pretty outdated. The design is pretty, but ultimately redundant.
undragonslayer7 says
Nothing. As computing technology advances, the line between a phone and a computer continues to fade. And soon it will be non-existent. I would think that this would have Skype, making it like a portable, free, and cooler looking cell-phone. Also it will out perform the smart phones of today, but in the future the only difference will be that this one looks cooler and will have a bigger screen and keyboard.

I suggest you look at any phone made in the last 5 years. They ARE computers. They access the web. They can write documents. They can play games. Seems pretty damn computer-like to me.
When it comes down to it, the only thing that sets the phone apart from a computer is that they can call other people, unless you own an iPhone. And that’s getting even more disputable with VoIP programs like Skype.
Hmmm.. says
Sure. Except for in depth customization to make it better, faster, more graphically inclined. The ability to surf the internet without paying murder prices for it. Storing well over 200 GBs of music, photos, AND videos. Interactive applications that require more GB space than a phone has. Levels of personalization. The ability to make calls without paying for a phone bill. Some other stuff. Aside from all that garbage you're all totally right about phones being computers.
@FPRobber says
I can customize my Android phone better than my Windows 7 PC. I don't pay murder prices (4€/GB) and can make calls for free using Skype, Fring or sipdroid. And I store all my music on my phone. It will take some time until I can store all my videos on my phone, but a huge clunky wristcomputer isn't worth it, just to carry my hundreds of GBs of videos with me all the time. If I want to watch a few movies on the go, my µSD has more than enough space for that.
I still agree that a desktop computer is far superior to a smartphone, but a wristcomputer is definitely not the solution.
undragonslayer7 says
I think this design is amazing, it will provide much faster access to your phone/computer. And it looks cool to. Also I imagine that it will be made to be pretty comfortable to

Next time you try to be some holier-than-thou smartass how about you research your facts, just a little, eh? The phones they are talking about are obviously smart phones. The definition of a smart phone?: "A mobile phone offering advanced functions which may normally only be found on a PC."
Definition of a computer: "A computer is a programmable machine that receives input, stores and manipulates data, and provides output in a useful format." So by that definition alone, any machine that receives input [a voice, number, etc], stores and manipulates data [recording the voice, saving a number, etc], and provides output in a useful manner [sends your voice to another unit, sends text or numbers, sends pictures, etc] are all computers… Thus, Cellphones, for a good 10 years have been doing this.

And btw you pay monthly for internet so that was a stupid argument, and the capacity for them will only get bigger, and i don't suggest watching a movie on a phone whether or not you can.

You could say its computer, but you could also say that its a phone because you would need some kind of wireless data service to be able to use social networking, etc. I guess you could say that this concept is really a smartphone with a bigger keyboard, a bigger, flexible screen, and a projector. Definitely cool though.

they can do it now this very day… however that’s not profitable $. Its important for business to not build the best possible product. They need to build many inefficient ones first so ppl go out and buy that first $$$, then make newer, cooler, slimmer models so you got to buy that new model $$$, then they go release a way better product with way more features so you need that 1 $$$. this cycle continues maximizing profit($$$)for business and creating a ton of waste for the earth.
an easy exp to see–> 1080i tv, 1080p tv, 1080i 3D capable tv with glasses you need to ware then. (ill predict the future now) 1080p 3Dtv with out the need to use glasses. How do i know, ill let you know… they can build the 1080p 3Dtv with out the need to use glass’s right now, however its about $$$ profit so they need to plan the releasing of inferior products so they can bank more $$$, milk it for all its worth… lol what a lovely system we have

This is so true, it’s disappointing to see how many people are ignorant of this situation. I for one find this abhorrent and practically offensive. Societal norms are practically being controlled by this trend, turning many people, including kids (especially kids), into the ultimate, blind consumers.
healthcare reform? we need consumerism reform as well, business ethic reform.
if you start a business, you will pretty much lose money the first few years, once it’s established, profit is a great thing, but as the business evolves, possibly into a larger company or corporation, if they ever begin to REMOTELY lose money, they blow the whistle and everyone goes stir crazy trying to get more promotions out. Big boss can’t take a pay cut, oh no sir, they’d rather cut the trend of losses, or employees, rather than lessen anything in their lives. That’s the problem with these companies. Society has bred these ignorant, selfish, and inhumane butterballs always gasping for more because that’s what they think life is about.
I’m part of a company that’s similar to this description, so i’ve got a bit of an idea. I’m not saying I’m 100% right, and part of this is a bit of speculation, but i can guarantee you it’s not far from the truth.

The only difficulty in development of this device that I see is durability. With such, what I assume to be, an expensive and fragile item in one’s possession – who would dare wear it on their wrist? I know that Rolex’s and the like are also expensive, but they are normally made of metal and made to withstand a degree of abuse. Not to say that it can’t be done – not at all, but making a computer that is sleek, compact, wearable, won’t overheat, etc. could still prove to be a task. I do believe it to be a feasible endeavor but there will be little challenges. At any rate, I’m a destitute student and won’t be investing in one. Hehe.
Matt says
Do a google search for Graphene and you’ll get an idea of the kind of material these things will be made of.
Graphene is a sheet of carbon as thick as a single atom yet stronger than any material we’ve ever encountered (diamonds are made of carbon and so a sheet of perfect carbon would therefore be stronger than that). Graphene can also conduct electricity and so can be used as all the circuitry you need in these devices.
So it’s very likely devices like this would be ultra light yet stronger than diamond. As long as we figure out how to mass manufacture at that scale. 2020 may be feasible.
Hawkins2210 says
Also check out Gorilla Glass by Corning: http://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/characteristi...
It looks like it has potential to live up to the durability and lightweight needs as far as screen protection goes. And it's probably cheaper than Graphene.
A thinker says
I agree that it overheating is a problem and I can't see a way to fix it at this time, it would be tricky to make this wearable, but there is a way to make it durable and compact (considering we already have iphones and many other tiny devices, which also tie into the sleek area.) . The only other problem I can see is the cost. I think it's a great idea though and would love to see it made and out on the market.
undragonslayer7 says
overheating: materials that don't heat up quickly/don't melt easily. Or very tiny ultra-fast fans.
cost: the economy grows, it will be like buying an expensive notebook computer.

I can’t say much but that is a concept for another future device from us here at Sony… We have a working prototype but that part that sticks out. Its not like that. These pictures just emphasize that there is something at that place on the device such as a camera. It has a very high quality and flexible type of plexiglass to prevent scratching since you may rub up against some rough materials or trip and fall on it. If this was not a very durable product it wouldn’t be worth it since its made to be taken anywhere. And by anywhere I mean anywhere(its waterproof and can withstand 300 ft.). It will be expected about $700 when it first comes out in 6-8 years. It may be more or less depending on how things change. The price is what we expect it to be by judging the economy and the progression of technology and resources in the past decade.
By the way everything I just said is not true nor do I work for Sony.

If this is going to work, they’re going to have to make it A LOT more fashionable. It’s going to take one hell of an advertising campaign to get this thing to catch on. Not to be a Debbie downer, but this does not attract a female audience whatsoever, nor is it by Apple, so more likely than not, people are going to hate it.
It’s clunky and obvious. No Paris Hilton/Marc Jacobs/Lady Gaga/any of the aforementioned people’s fans are going to be caught dead wearing it in public unless they make it not (I hate to use the word) geeky as all hell.
All this is made worse by the fact that it probably will cost an arm and a leg. It’s a great concept, but I strongly worry if it will integrate successfully into the real world.
Bleh says
What the hell is up with you people and your “fashions”, its a freaking computer, it doesn’t have to look good for people to buy it, so long as it’s functional then it has done its job.
Who cares what dim witted celebrity uses them? Are you so self conscious that you need some celebrity’s approval before you make your purchase? Regardless if Paris Hilton (or whatever other clueless, dim witted celebrity you worship) uses one or not, you will never be in the same league as she is, nor will you ever achieve that level of fame, her social status or even come close to have even a fraction of her wealth…
These aren’t toys, they’re meant to be productive for people on the go who doesn’t quite need a full laptop but needs something better than a smartphone. They’re not meant for the average Joe to carry around to try to seem more important than he really is, or to show off to friends… And most importantly, no gadget will ever get you “girls”, if you think it will, you’re sadly mistaken and should probably leave mommy’s basement more often.
MikeyG says
I apologize. I didn’t mean to offend anyone, and I see your point. I understand what the product is and what it would be used for; however, I just predict that it will have a difficult time integrating into society. There is a reason there is a green/pink and white version, and I believe that it is because it is Sony’s hope to reach a broad audience, including women and girls.
As I’ve already reiterated, I think it is a great concept, and no where did I say that I would not buy it. I am simply an advertiser giving my input. I may have been harsh in my criticism, and Paris Hilton may have been a controversial example, but I remain adamant in my opinion.

From a woman's point of view, I wouldn't care what colour it was because I'd be purchasing it for it's functionality, not it's contribution to my daily wardrobe. I really do hope that not all advertisers believe that something has to be pink, sparkly, and endorsed by a "famous" person in order to draw a female audience. I would further hope that most females aren't so ridiculous that they would only be intersted if it were. On that note, I wonder if average people would be interested at all in such a "geeky" item, even if it were fashionable. I can't see most of the people I know ever being interested in this even if the most popular people in Hollywood endorsed it and it were the most magnificent colours – they simply have no need for constant connectivity. I think some items aren't designed for the masses, just specific groups – like geeks.
I'm interested to see if this concept will be taken further, and what capabilities it would have overall. I saw a TED talk about a "6th sense" device once, and I think I'd be a bit more interested in that than this. Now if they combined the two, THAT would be an amazing gadget!

Computers need to be more integrated and need a more human interface. What we have are gadgets for nerds that take too much time and energy to use. Like it or not Star Trek had it right. Speaking to a computer as you would to another person is the ultimate vision of the future. Everything electronic should be connected, it would take the guess work out of analysis. Just about any body could fix their own problems, it would be like the ultimate mentor. It would truly take humanity to a new level, a much better place, a world with less unsolvable contradictions, where truth prevails.

And there are still places where you can escape from today's busy world. I (a huge internet nerd) take a yearly trip into the wilderness (actual wilderness, not just the park) and find the lakes, trees, and animals very beautiful and awe-inspiring. And Earth's wilderness isn't the best, imagine a world where people take trips into the wilderness of space, and appreciate "a galaxy rising"

How silly…. do they take practicality into consideration? I'm pretty sure I don't want my thousands of dollars exploding the first time I trip and fall down, or bang my wrist against something by accident. A couple hundred dollar phone protected at least by being kept away in your pocket is already easily broken, a computer with projections etc on a wrist is just foolish. Warning: do not wear this wrist-computer unless at your desk and do not eat or drink with it on? Oh, might as well have a normal computer at my desk with a comfortable keyboard and mouse then huh.

Warning: do not wear this wrist-computer unless at your desk and do not eat or drink with it on? Oh, might as well have a normal computer at my desk with a comfortable keyboard and mouse then huh.

The conceptual design for this computer is phenominal with few potential drawbacks. The most obvious of which is the not-so-aesthetically-pleasing bulge which houses the projector. The potential for overheating is there because the majority of the surface area is being used as a screen or is in contact with the user's wrist. However, this problem could be solved by increasing the thickness allowing for more ventilation. I do have one question. If you look at image 6 you can see the right half of the computer touch pad has a picture of a mouse. Will you manuver that mouse to controll the cursor or will that entire screen act as a track pad?

This concept is a complete joke. What need would this fulfill that a smart phone doesnt at this time? Also, this gadget looks entirely overbearing on your arm, making it a pain to travel with it. In my mind, this would a step BACK 10 years. if they want to make technology more useful, combine everything. Then after thats done invent something else like Gore did with the internet. I'm fairly sure a wristwatch video call phone is already a producible product. Soon we will be making video calls from home to our friends and family. Just like the second Back to the Future movie.

Great. Then we can all look like high-risk-for-flight felons and people under house arrest. I'm comparing this to the GPS ankle bracelets. I'd rather have a 7 pound laptop sitting in a bag somewhere than walk around with e monstrosity like this on my wrist. That being said I guess it's not a bad option if you don't want to carry a bag somewhere and want to slap in on real quick to keep your hands free. This is mostly speaking from the consumer perspective of moving around daily life. Such a cumbersome thing would know into and catch on everything as you moved through the world. I can see where it might have more use as a wearable if you were able to access its functionality as a part of a job; say taking orders and inventory, being a part of a work team staying in communication and relaying data, etc. But the keyboard still requires it to be removed and laying it out on a table. I think the designs are cool but I'm not sure the practical side of the product is all that genius, at least as a wearable, or as a significant reduction of the cumbersomeness of laptops.
OH, and there is not screen without a project surface. In that regard, how is this different from an iPhone that bends?

The ability to project the screen is cool, but keeping something in a pocket is easier than on the arm…what happens if you have to wash your hands? Or put on a coat? Practical technology needs to work for practical living.

This is interesting. Not fantastic, as others have pointed out without much elegence. This device is better than a smartphone (if comfortable to wear) as it solves the input issue – full keyboards are indefinitly easier to use than even the best mobile thumb interface. I could see it as a "smartphone" that never has to take up a pocket or add weith to the purse, that could be continually trickle-charged using a person's natural movement. It looks like the designer was trying a bit too hard… without outrageous battery innovations, there's no way to power both screens and a projector, nor have much reason to do both.

It's a lovely design, pity it's only a dream. I have to agree with some of the other comments, at the rate of technology advancements, if a large company felt compelled by the idea and saw it as the future, they could probably do it a lot sooner, probably even tomorrow! The big thing I want to see by 2020 is not just a fancy wrist phone/computer, but my entire digital life. Scrap a PC at home, a laptop for the train and then a Mac at work, I want one device that can do it all. Something like this which flips out I think will be crucial, as you don't want to hold something the size of a laptop to your ear, yet you want it to be big enough to work on in the office, on the train etc.
Anyway, good design again, keep it up!

You are absolutely right. This goes well past media technology, too; e.g. there are a lot of efficient, cheap medical technologies that aren’t being produced because companies won’t make enough of a profit. Technologies that could save millions of lives in 3rd world countries and the like.. but instead they develop expensive crap we don’t need.

With the technology that is in this bracelet computer, I would expect to see it out on the market this year. There isn't anything new about it. I like the idea, please make it connect to everything and be rechargeable through solar panels behind the screen. It should be able to be my main computer and play new games sufficiently. A nice mic would be nice too. Also, waterproof it and have it be nearly indestructible as I will break it in a week. Thanks.

Well. . . So we are going to see more crazy designs to wear on wrists and may be some 3rd party starts to offer new desgin skins for wrist PCs as well
pete says
This would be very feasible with an energy harvesting power source from body movement and body heat. Batteries or having to recharge would be impractical. It should also be voice activated and voice command driven in addition to the UI shown. Security is and will be extremely important so both voice and other biological requirements for access should be part of the feature set.

the technology is already here, I seen a video of the Plexiglas getting hit by a hammer and there was no damage and the video was still going. here is the link to that. "http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/98Izmi/www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DnbTO5VM6s-4" but what I don't believe is that they are never and I mean never, going to get a projection on the air with any quality.. They are never come even close to the ever expanding video screens. (Video screen are just too sharp to even think of competing with. All you going to get is a snowy projection on the air. The Japanese have been working on this for like 10 years (the projection air screen) and have not improve.. They are just better of with an I-PAD with that new material called "Samsungs Flexible OLED Screen"

This is really cool, especially the holographic display. I think it would take a while for the idea of wearing a computer on one's wrist to catch on, though.
Travis w. Kirkland says
while this is a very awesome looking concept, i agree with those of you who say that its durrability is a major weakpoint. it can be foreseen that it could be like an iPod touch or iPhone, if not worse, if you trip or hit it on something by accident it seems that it could easily break or at least dammage the screen substancialy. I have seen several sites showing this concept and none have addressed this problem. dispite this, as advances in this field could yield a game-changer for this, i see this product as quite usefull. in, conclusion, while i understand the idea behind it, the fragility (if that's a word in this context) of itposes a major problem.
and the bulge adds style, it looks kewl, kind of like a scifi watch or something.

The wrist is a much too vulnerable place for a device of this kind. People are used to relying on an object apart from themselves (as with phones), and that separation will be hard to deinstall in people's approaches to technology.

It's a computer on your wrist. Wow. So innovative!
This isn't an invention it's a rehash of another invention. Similar to someone coming up with a see through toaster, wow now I can see the toast is nearly done. Guess what I can do that with a normal toaster anyway by peeking inside or using my sense of smell to smell burning toast.
Anyway – this is a nice concept but it's just a computer squashed into a wrist watch. I don't really fancy taking my watch off to make a phonecall, or to send an email. I already wear a watch, a nice gold one, it tells the time and date. The phone goes conviently in my pocket.
I just hope they have carbon nano-tube batteries by the year 2020.

I give to this being a real cool syfy idea but until we live in eco-domes patrolled by robot cops that demand we carry the necessary e-doc's at all times the practicality of idea is minimal. I've been thinking about something very similar lately: a wireless bracelet with display panels– 5 or 6 tiny panels that display either static or active images/web pages. I wondered if having moving images on our wrists, say lions on the savannah, would be to distracting for jewelry. But tiny lcd panels could be a lot of fun and very beautiful, especially with real-time capability. Imagine a field of flowers blowing in a breeze on one panel, sunsets on another…you get the idea.
I imagined that one or more of the bracelet links/panels would have the ability to be a touch screen command center for the item, allowing wearers/users to program which images they want displayed.
I had not really imagined the full capabilities of a wrist computer! That would be powerful.
The power issue is important. There are tiny batteries available of course, and rechargables. The bracelet would need a usb port for wired charging, and perhaps have some piezo electric ability to charge by motion if that technology is developed enough. TM.

This is quite possible and I think we might see something like this sooner than ten years, although it would be quite expensive. Ah also, on the downside I don't believe that wrapping your wrist with a mobile device would be too healthy. There are already concerns with today's 2G and 3G devices with regards to radiation exposure. In 10 years time we are highly likely to have wireless signals much faster than what we have today, and unfortunately, higher bandwidth requires a stronger signal, and the stronger the signal, the more radiation the device will create. Unless they can develop a high bandwidth low signal system, these devices could be quite dangerous with long-term every day exposure.

its not that we are missing the capabilities of a highspeed wireless/wired communication medium, its that what we do have is limited in connectivity capabilities… i.e. making connection available literally everywhere… although the concept for that would be outrageously tough to take on… it would actually completely take out the idea of having to make our system technology better… rather al we would have to to is “VAMP UP” what we already have and the limits would sore

Amazing idea. Although in my mind it is a little sad that people are becoming so dependent upon machines that we would need to accessorize with them in order to have constant connection. But then another part of me is saying "2020? C'mon why not 2012! I want it and I want it now!" Ah, the internal struggle between wanting to become less dependent on technology and the ingrown consumerism that I have lived with all my life.

This literally looks like something that would be featured in a mocking list like “10 Gadget Designs That Were Supposed To See Into The Future” in 2020. It looks like a prop from Back To The Future 2.
Too bulky, ugly and inevitably clunky for mass acceptance. Something along these lines will no doubt prevail, but definitely not this. For one thing, holographic keyboards are already being developed: why would we need a pulldown keyboard ten years from now?

This device is an great idea, and one that will greatly change by 2020, who knows what they will be selling by then. Maybe an implant that lets you do anything just by thinking, see the display floating in front of you, make it as big or small as you want because only you see it, the images are wholly within your mind, direct retinal connection. Want to take a picture, look at the thing you want captured and press your thumbnail [BTW that kind of camera was mentioned by the President of Sony maybe 15 or more years ago]. The move now is to shove everything towards Cloud computing, not a great idea for the user in the long run, but great for the company that controls the software, servers, access lines and the rest. Oh, it’s free right now but that won’t last. The Cloud is one of Gates dreams, it wasn’t warmly received when he first mentioned it, too easy to see the dark side of M$ and it didn’t have a nice fluffy friendly name like Cloud. The end goal is still the same, give everyone a dumb terminal and keep control over everything else, once you get them all hooked, and it’s all that’s left, then start charging for access, and just keep raising the cost on all the possible options, think apps you rent by the month..
This device will more than likely have a phone option if, when it gets built for retail sales.
Being wearable is like it provides it’s own pocket to be carried around in.
But 10 years is a huge amount of time where technology is concerned, like a Century or more for humans. So exciting to see all the potentials.

all you have to do is add a little velcro to current devices and you've got BETTER than that.
what I want to see is a 12mm wide bracelet with a slide out-rollup 50mmx200mm screen – so you normally have a fashion braclet with a display screen that xtends onto the forearm on demand… Combined with a projector, extendable display legs and laser-keyboard for putting it on a table at a cafe or such. No reason it cant be built by 2014.

Sounds like you are talking about more of a terminal style structure. The user interacts with the immediate device, but the main computing power is located elsewhere. Cloud computing is trying to do that, but it’s not really new. That’s actually how computing worked before the personal computer. The problem was speed because it had to be sent and returned. I think you are right that we are close to doing that again which will make our devices more powerful, but for a while we may have to sacrifice some speed due to the transmission media

I am sure that she will show her pleasure with your company. Don’t talk loudly, don’t apologize for everything, kept far from lie, don’t laugh too much, don’t try to hide yourself, always speck evidently, control yourself from tension.

At least I understand what you are talking about Vinod. You mean being able to have a house computer system where all of your electronic devices are connected for convenience. Also, you could allocate not computer information, but computer RESOURCES to make not just an intranet or a personal cloud, but to connect the CPUs of all of said devices simultaneously to make a hive-mind like processing system. Unlike clouds and the intranet, and all other modern computer communication methods which only communicate information, not process it, this could actually create a form of wireless, multi-device CPU.

What you’re talking about is already in the making, it just requires fine tuning. The internet would be the network you are talking about and a remote desktop client would be the way to send your input to a fully functional computer. There is no way to actually share (50% computations here 50% computations there then output sent to you) computations in that manor as far as I know, but if remote desktop clients are developed further we may have what you are talking about.

1: Bluetooth uses radio waves.
2: Radio waves and infrared light do not cause cancer. Ionising radiation (high intensity ultraviolet, x-rays and gamma rays) do not cause cancer either.
3: As IR and RF both have less energy per photon than visible light, they do less damage to the structure of your DNA.
4: The smaller a microprocessor gets, the less heat is produces and the less voltage it wastes.
5: Some UV, XR and GR increase your chances of developing cancer, but they do not cause it.
6: If you believed RF causes cancer, you wouldn’t be alive. Seeing as we began using radio waves for the transfer of information well over 60 years ago, and all that.
7: Infrared is commonly known as heat – they are one and the same. Heat doesn’t cause cancer either.

Actually this has already been done but on a very basic level. The PSP (Playstation Portable) can remotely access the PS3 (Playstation 3) from anywhere via the internet. You can actually see what is on the PS3 system on the PSP screen as long as theres a wireless connection and both Playstations are on. In other words the the PS3 is doing all the grunt work while the PSP just acts as a remote display unit. Its like a computer with a wireless monitor basically. There really isn’t much you can do with the PSP/PS3 remote feature. You cant watch movies or play games or anything else for that matter so its really quite useless unless Sony makes an upgrade before someone steals the idea… assuming it was Sony’s idea to begin with that is.

Also, I think the design for this wrist computer looks really stupid and impractical and I could have modeled this myself in 3D in about 5 minutes (And thats not saying much because I’m not that good at 3D modeling). Next gen isn’t going to look anything like this. I can assure you. There are other designs for next gen computers that will be far more sophisticated and capable and far more believable as well as practical.

Wow… The wrist computer idea is very cool. But that’s not what has me astonished. I’m astonished at just how… rude, self-centered, ego-maniacal, and just plain cruel… some of the comments on here are. Just because someone is not INTIMATELY familiar with the workings of a concept, does not mean they cannot talk about it in the abstract. This article was meant to inspire, not start the next troll-wars. Please, if you like to start fights, go to 4Chan or play WoW, both have your kind there. Otherwise, please, CONTRIBUTE to the conversation, in a constructive manner, and stop trolling.
I think the idea of a non-centralized, distributable method of parallel processing, would be very nice. However, I would still like to make it private, so maybe see a method develop where my cell phone, mp3, and computer all work together, in a private network? That would work for me.
aiboy says
Interesting for me.

If they could integrate this concept with a full fledged cell phone, this would absolutely be an invention of the century.
Choppy says
Technology has grown so rapidly. This will match the cloud. Invisible computer, invisible data. I’m not sure if I can adjust that much though….I like my keyboard.
Kenneth Sills says
You do realize that it would have to send massive amounts of data over a network, which would have to be wireless (and therefore quite slow) every single cycle. Not only would it quite some time to receive a cycle, but also to send one to say what input was used. It would take a very noticeable amount of time to input, send it through this network, sent through every single step through the computer (CPU, RAM, CPU, GPU, et cetera), then sent back. You could have lag from anywhere from milliseconds (still noticeable) to seconds. The technology would be extremely expensive. You would have to have a running, power-guzzling super computer on at all times, and this would make every hackers job a dream. So let’s stop saying, “Okay, I know we have the technology to make it this small and great… BUT. MAYBE WE SHOULD USE A SUPER INEFFICIENT AND SLOW METHOD THAT WAS PROVEN TO BE A HORRIBLE IDEA MANY TIMES ALREADY INSTEAD.” We have cloud computing, and even gaming now. But these servers are massive and expensive, need liquid nitrogen cooling, and still don’t run all that well. If this idea worked, it would be implemented in cell phones and handhelds and consoles wouldn’t it? I know those trolls didn’t explain it or understand it, but there is the answer to that. I’ll even show my name.

I completely agree im kinda surprised at so much hate, but i must say this tech displayed is pretty close at hand, maybe not the bending or hologram but a projector and slide out keyboard? very much so. we already have phones that are micro-computers, why not interface it so that our phone can unfold into a full sized computer. I know there are areas lacking in our current technological state but i say this may be possible by 2015 at the rate tech is evolving
Maybe even sooner
Anonymous says
Been done, though it is mainly used in academia to replace supercomputers when on a budget. In essence, 200+ regular computers are purchased and linked so that each one computes small parts of the problem, just as parallel processing and multi-threading does. While this is useful for academia where high speed data transfers are not required, for things such as this, where they are, it would be unfeasible to do it at a reasonable price.
However, what others have been saying about using the internet is true as well. Many computers become bots/zombies and therefore share their computing resources with one central computer which issues the commands, but it is done without the knowledge or desire of the user.
