The Dry Side
Don’t you love the days following a rainstorm? The streets seem to gleam, the air is cleaner, and people are generally in a better mood to finally see the sun again. The only thing that sucks are all those wet benches and chairs. Fortunately clever designers (the Korean design gang) came up with a simple solution. The slats on these benches can rotate to the dry side by cranking the handle.

This just looks like it = fun
Wow would I have fun if I saw people sitting on this…
Aaron says
Sweet, I hate wet benches.
Traci says
or if there’s some unknown substance on the bench… great idea!
Joke says
Hmmm r u all assuming the underside of the bench will not get wet??? With the generous radius, I am damn sure the underside will be more wet than the top. All the water will flow down and gather there. At least the top is exposed to sunlight to dry. This really need better thinking! I’m suggesting to look at the profile such that water doesn’t flow down to the underside.

your kinda right…
but uhm, really, it seems like you wanna show the world how much you know;; and all that isnt necessary
dont burst any bubbles….

Sounds like he’s just being a pessimistic jackass that’s jealous he didn’t come up with the idea first ^.^
seriously. They are designers for a reason, that’s their job, to look at all the possibilities. I’m sure the gaps in the wood prevent water from sliding down.
Brian says
Hey man hes not being a pessimistic jackass its only constructive criticism. Thats a perfectly good observation that he mad. There are cracks inside the bench that are functional, so that it can turn but their still needs to be a system that will prevent the bottom side from getting wet. Don’t get me wrong its a great idea but it still needs work and hes only putting his two cents in to help this designer further his idea. If you were a true designer you would know that a design is never finished and always needs constant intention. So in conclusion my friend you are the pessimistic jackass.

i think downside will get wet as well.anyway, consider such a good idea for this design.
WTJ says
won’t the water flow to the bottom when it’s raining?
chetan sorab says
very appealing i should say.
Njbrideau says
how long would it take before somebody rolled a homeless guy off the bench?
tom says
thats what i thought first, maybe automate it to do just that, brilliant!
timqui says
Has it brake? If not it´s possible to sit and roll myself down.
Steven says
Wheres the brake lever, good idea ut the underside is very likely to get wet. It can double as a treadmill for bums.
Kallie says
With this bench you can just roll off the bums in the morning.
Moo says
I can just see somebody cranking the handle to knock someone off it.

great post…

nice one…

Cool idea. I saw something like it before, except the bench had like two “pages” of rubber seating. If one is wet, flip to the other.
As for those concerned that the bottom will collect water: If you look closely, you’ll see the little ridges along the seat. I’m sure the water will have trouble trickling up the ridges
Valery Rybchenko says
hi there, where can find hi-res photo?
Nate says
Great idea. Annoying thing is that in any city I’ve ever been in, some jerk (90% likely to be a drunk or high male asswipe) is going to break the handle to impress his friends. Or smear some kind of shit on all sides of it for a hilarious joke.
Davey says
Cool idea; attractive benches!
Sano says
It’s a cool idea but this one probably doesn’t work very well because of it’s design.
Brady says
wow thats really kool.
carl says
simply would not work. after a long and heavy storm all of the bench would be wet top and bottom. Timber is a natural absorbent of water and also lets it evaporate quickly when facing the sun too. any damp timber kept from direct light will take longer to dry and will rot..!
is there a lock or braking system that would prevent a user who sits on the bench not rotating it with their rear? if not they would slip off the bench.
many current benches have a natural angle on them they allows rain to deviate off the surface, then dry naturally.
i applaud the lateral thought you have employed on this, but testing a concept is essential before launching it. 9/10 there is a very very good reason why new ideas do not exist. they would not work.

Perhaps there is something inside this bench, waht catches the water and turns it out on the side?

I have a better idea
Give a bum a dollar to rub himself across the wet bench!

“bum” means like you?

YOU MISSPELLED “AFTER?!”

If I were to illustrate a bench after rain, I would probably make the entire bench wet, not just little puddles. As is, it looks like someone had a little accident while they were waiting for a bus.

can i rotate wth someone sitting on it ?

perfect project…

cant believe this is no3 best of all time!! would like to see it made then the integrity of the product can be tested.

Bench / treadmill
Look guys, it really wouldn’t be that tough to engineer the bench to keep the underside from getting wet. For instance, perhaps the inside drum is dished on the top. The water could easily be routed out the sides. This is actually a great idea. You know what we call you kids in design school?
Shooterdowners.
Ted Liptak says
Perfect idea.
