Liquid to Light
Designer Ed Chew takes a green step in the right direction with the TetraBox lamp, a light object made from discarded drink packets that would have otherwise ended up in landfills already packed to the brim. The design is achieved by unfolding the packets and refolding them into hexagonal and pentagonal sections that are then pieced together to form a geodesic sphere or any other desired shape. Here, the Epcot-like ball makes an attractive overhead light and casts an impressive web of shadows and shapes on the surrounding space.

As much as i hate replying to trolls, there is a finite amount of matter on earth. By sending our trash into space were decreasing the amount of matter. Eventually there would be no earth left. Yes, it would be a very long time, but eventually it would happen.

Mike says
Actually you would be the idiot who cannot read. Ethan's comment was based on the totally false statement made in the paragraph: “…made from discarded drink packets that would have otherwise ended up in landfills already packed to the brim.”
The landfills are NOT full. Ethan wasn't saying that recycling is bad, he was simply saying that that is a false statement. Which is true.

Huh? Maybe where you live they aren't full to the brim. Where I live, they are, and we are scrambling to find new places to put our junk. If this wasn't the case, no one would bother to recycle. I suppose we could ship all our junk to where you live, but that wouldn't be very cost-effective, nor would you be very open to the idea.

And paper/plastic type material won't burn/scorch/melt etc. No toxic fumes from the heat of the lamps running all day. Beautiful – just another piece of nice art. But no practicality at all. There's a reason there's recycling. Separate your trash and do your part. Making lampshades out of cartons isn't going to save the world, probably quite the opposite.
Ryan Frye says
Uhm….This is better then recycling, it's called reusing, much better then using more energy to convert something back into it's base material.
Yannick says
Not if you're reusing it for something completey useless. They still have to make new tetraboxes to replace the ones you didn't recycle.
Guest says
But they will not have to make new LAMPS, which take more energy to create. Athankyou.

You can't recycle those in most places so what you are saying is irrelevant.

What ever some here say it’s good style and concept and one can take inspiration from where ever you get it. To make the lamp commercially viable it will need to be multiplied in a mechanical way. That means producing either more tetra packs or simple make a mold and it may end up at IKEA or which ever store will be willing to carry it. Bravo.

1) be happy with who you are
2) don't eat bananas (they're radioactive)
3) make lamp screens out of milk cartons
4) Take the remaining white materia to a northen crater
5) think you save the world only to realize the world is about to save it self by getting rid of you
6) play less video games
*if you at any point stop being happy about being yourself, and you have not eaten bananas as I told you, maybe you are using cartons of the wrong kind of milk. For further details, please see page 42 of the manual.

Nice design, but the renderings kind of make me mad. Those shadows are beautiful but there’s no way that’s actually possible. It was interesting but you lowered it by making images that lie about your design. There’s hardly anyone that wouldn’t notice that there’s something wrong there.

Wow so many comments to this.
Well first thing what wrong with coffee flavoured milk , haven’t you ever drunk chocolate/ almond/ vanilla or the so many other flavours around you which have been added to milk???
I don’t think the guy had to sit around drinking all those milk cartons he probably had them collected through the trash or something simple (and less belly filling) like that.
For all those who are pestering about the making use of the tetrapacks for this not being a method of recycling well guess what YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. (But that doesn’t matter anyway unless you are some sort of PURIST). Waste management/ reduction is made up of 3 main parts which are basically
REDUCE: Use less
REUSE: Use again in the same form
RECYCLE: Re-produce the product from the same material or make other knew material from that product.
From what I see this project is massively about Re-using and a bit also about recycling. so chill people.
And to those saying that the world is going to end because of making things from this well: who said that lamp shades should be made out of this? its a project and a nice DIY project for those who want to promote a recycling project among kids/ students or other adults. So thanks Ed for your inspiration and keep it up man.
P.S. Oh and nearly forgot about the shadows being unnatural. i have yet to see a product marketing campaign that showed the actuality/ reality of the object be it car ads/ food or even household appliances
Sue says
Oh and also to change the light. I believe he must have been using leds to keep with the efficiency side. So these would easily be changeable (after a long time of use) using a pair of tweezers and some dexterity and if a bulb you could just pull apart some tetrapack triangles and change it through there
Dan says
While I like this very much, in fact I would love to make one myself… it is misleading that all the images showing the lamp in an environment are 3D renders with the lighting and shadows GREATLY exaggerated. The photo of the physical model showing the much softer shadows is good. I would scrap the renders as they just look weird

Boo! We don’t like recycling. We have the right to use as many disposal products as we want to and throw them away no matter how long they take to decompose. That’s what being American is all about. Fuck it. It’s someone else’s job anyway. Go buy a brand new, cheap-looking, overpriced lamp from Target: made in China, where they will soon be doing my job for less and are paying for all the tax cuts I receive because I get pissed when I have to pay for my own country to survive despite it contributing to that deficit that peeves me so. Fierce independence, hippies, do it yourself!
Indigo-Peach says
Uh no one said you HAD to recycle… I don’t care either way for rcycling but its just that someone used their creative mind to come up with something nice… Thats whats so great about the country you live in, FREEDOM of speech… As well as actions in this situation… If its not what you’re into then don’t bother saving old stuff to make something just toss it. The Earth will eventually end and thats inevitable… Either way it is your opinion and you’re entitled to it, just learn how to back it up and not sound like some whiny kid who complains too much
