MacBook Touch? Maybe, Just Maybe…
Designer Tommaso Gecchelin isn’t oblivious to all the rumors surrounding a netbook or tablet-like PC made by our favorite fruit manufacturer. We try not to indulge in rumors here at YD but sometimes they do provide fuel for inspiration, such is the case with this MacBook Touch.
Gecchelin reasons if Apple were to go small, flexibility may be more important than hard rigidness – a trend current Apple laptops buck because they’re in favor of unibody construction. Flexible OLED technology may be the key because it can provide the rich color and resolution density needed for a smaller screen without being a power hog and resists damage by its malleable nature. The thinnest screens now are barely 8mm thick and can fold like a piece of paper.
The core of this concept is a technology he calls iSpine. Like the spine of a book, the tech avoid excessive compression on the screen, yet allows the laptop to sit in multiple viewing positions. Go from a normal laptop with screen and touchscreen board – to a large widescreen canvas for drawing, presentation or movie watching. To keep everything minimal, ports like power, the mini display, and additional USB are externalized on a “Magic Dock” to keep most of the laptop slim and clean of an array of holes and plugs.

Great design.
One thing though: I don’t think Mac brand is so suitable for this work. You see, the concept work done under Mac brands are usually forgotten of quickly because there are so many of them even though Mac does not actually ever publish concepts. One other thing that I am not so sure of anymore but can you do 2D and 3D drawings at the same level as PC’s on macs? I mean, as far as I am aware, PC’s are more commonly used for this purpose. This would probably attract tablet users who usually use them for this.

The company is called Apple, not Mac.

You *are* aware that most designers and 2D/3D artists use Macs, right?
Jpesh says
Not 3d artists, they generally use Windows in the professional industry.
Powers says
That’s changing. Plus I wouldn’t touch a Windows machine with a barge pole wearing a bee suit. Oh, and I still think this concept is ridiculous.
Woodat says
You mean “You *are* aware that most designers and 2D/3D artists use **Apples**, right?” Please be consistent in your trolling
Kolk says
Apple Inc. is a company that makes Macs. foljs was completley correct in his wording.

Not real but if it had the same specks as a 2009 mac pro i would pay up to 20,000 for it id have to save for about 4 months but damn thats a good design i might have to make that screw my modbook pro design id make that!!! im gonna charge 15,000 for it
yar says
a pretty impressive concept here but like S,K commented, Apple never accept ideas which are published by “3rd party” designers. Even if Gecchelin joins Apple, Jon Ive probably would never allow him to influence the design anyway. regardless, good job Gecchelin!!

I’m afraid you are absolutely right…

I don’t understand how the notebook stays upright in the “desktop” position?
confusing…
also, this would be stronger without apple posted all over it.
otherwise, nice presentation
watchface says
by wedging it in the Magic Dock.
Could you elaborate on your -”this would be stronger without apple posted all over it.” theory? I’d love to hear why a touch of branding makes a concept weak? Does it not put it into context?
the destroyer says
the notebook stays upright due to the little stand thing provided. If you read the blurb in the pic it tells u.
apple posted all over it? Where? All i see is the little apple logo on the back of it… just like every other laptop they sell.
idk … this thing looks so awesome! i’d buy that in a heartbeat!
Gary Lim says
I see the difficulties with the iSpine design with current technology and to make it affordable.
or Apple can make this standalone as MacTouch as it won’t come in low price with such big OLED screen in 1 year.
First of all, let’s hope Snow Leopard built in native support for multitouch
Tommaso Gecchelin says
I spine is just an array of plastic pieces…simple and cheap tecnology…

This would be my dream computer.

Leave apple out, and just do it. It may be possible that way. Call Asus.

Stunning work! Wouldn’t mind interviewing you briefly on this.

Great, as long as it allows full blown presentations from NATIVE Keynote and PowerPoint presentations.

Great conceptual work! There’s just something alluring about the Apple brand that product designers find hard to resist. When I was studying product design at College back in 1997 I adorned the apple logo on a concept I put together for a electronic ink based book (e-Pad) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/nathanpitman/135056389/in/set-235377/
Quite amusing to look back at the ideas we were dreaming up then in the context of what’s happening today.

Well … it looks a bit like an ugly PC doesn’t it ?

@foljs no need for fanboy remarks here, don’t make general bias’.
I don’t really like the idea of having my laptop, but then having to carry around this magic dock. I really like the idea of the built in keyboard, but I think the tactile feeling and the feedback given by a keyboard is required for anyone doing any serious typing.
Great concept and very nicely presented!
I’d probably get one, but probably not, due to it would probably cost 4g knowing apple
.
Ciao!
george says
I like how it looks like a 3ring binder from the side.
I know everyone likes to harp on the necessity of tactile feedback for typing, but as I have no experience of not using a keyboard for typing (other than on an iphone) I don’t have any evidence whether this would be bad or good.
It would be amazing if someone like apple or other actually got a tablet right. Most tablet PCs are utterly terrible. They are fine as laptops, but if you want something light that actually works well with a pen based interface, no can do (at least ones running XP, I havent tried a Vista tablet). I mean part of the draw is that you dont have to find space for a keyboard.
geoffy rhodes says
ofg i would so get one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats madd asss
Tachyio says
I used to think I needed a tactile keyboard, that was until I got the iPod Touch 2nd Gen…the virtual keyboard on that thing is so good, I type twice as fast on the virtual board than on the real one.
In fact, I now even dread typing on a real keyboard, as it requires “effort” to push down on the keys. Whereas on the virtual one, my fingers just fly over each key i want to press.
So awesome! I’m young, so I guess my brain adapts better to new tech.
Jeremiah says
I usually tend to stray away from “Apple” concepts because I see it as evil, yet I know I’m starting to give in slowly…
Anyway, branding aside, this idea and concept has baller status written all over it. And by baller status I mean: functional, pretty, and most likely hella expensive…
But it does look like it would be really worth it though… Great idea, good job with the renderings and explanations too

“You *are* aware that most designers and 2D/3D artists use Macs, right?”
Really? Last I checked, two of the top three 3D modeling packages were Windows only.

Sexy as, I love it! I would go out and buy one right now if I could. Great, great job! The idea of the “magic dock” is great as well … to be able to set up and use it as a desk top with a great big screen is genius!

Well when this or something similar comes out, I should have the money saved to buy one.
But I would only buy one if they did a lot of Art Support, high quality sensitivity to the OLED for the Pencil/brush application to make “digital drawing” as simple as possible.
I draw by hand, and really I never liked the idea of using a computer to do my work – it ruins the Creativity in my world – a computer can make straight lines without problems, your own hand has to be trained, and hard.

now thts a great thought thts been expected from many, but from minority
.. but soon am sure its there,, and thts gonna make evryone and anyone an artist…:) tht time ur hands on work will be valued much more…
sachin george says
seriously… when OLED is seems to be the next level(well many more yet to explore on current physical forms..) personally i don’t find it as exciting as it is presented… if mac come up with just this flexibility factor, am sure many like me would be disappointed,… i really expect more out of apple, than just a bite from the latest technology.
but good thoughts n great efforts to render them out….
{thoughts and renders like u did do triggers many unkown creative heads across the worlds}{{keep going}}
Nathan says
Okay guys, you’re thinking about the screen problems, no one’s thinking about the internals? Such as the mobo – since when could a mobo flex?
Very unlikely
Tommaso Gecchelin says
It’s studied to be feasible…
So, the flexible part is just a little zone in the middle where there’s just the oled flexible screen supported by ispine. The mobo is located in the rigid part of che computer.
Take a closer look to understand…
Very likely…
Mozes says
This is genius!!!
I love it. It’s creative, useful, sexy looking and shows amazing talent by you.
Will be twitting this soon…

Hii,
This design is simply marvelous, if this laptop gets build then it will be the best in the tablet PCs category, especially for digital artists and designers, we will be having a blast.
Count me in for one, great design, it rocks but hopefully we find it someday in Apple stores
.
Max Payne says
If HP were to do this w/ Win 7, that would be a very VERY viable competitor to the Mac concept. Or a netbook maker like Acer or ASUS. This has AWESOME stamped all over it.

First 2 pics: apple would NEVER release a laptop (or any other computer) with screwheads visible on the lid.
Jessic: you can’t buy them, they’re concept designs. They don’t exist. They were…photoshopped.
Tommaso Gecchelin says
Those are not screwheads but rubber pieces as under every laptop (apple or not).
And…by the way…ibook’s screwheads are visible on the lid…
And…I’m sorry but it’s just a concept…but it’s not “photoshopped”…it’s fully designed in Autocad and presented in Gimp…
robb says
how do u really work with that too much touch.
gotta need real mouse.
but the concept itself is beautiful.
